2G case: SC to hear review petitions today

The Supreme Court will on Tuesday hear a slew of review petitions filed by the Prime Minister’s Office and telecom companies in the 2G spectrum allocation case.

Reportedly, the apex court will reconsider its own judgments given on issues relating to cancellation of 2G spectrum licences and the grant of sanction for prosecution of public servants.

The petitions were filed by telecom companies and one each by the PMO, the Union government and former telecom minister and key accused in the 2G scam case, A Raja.

Goa airport to be closed for 3 days from April 5

Goa’s lone airport at Dabolim is heading for an annual maintenance closure for three days during day time from April 5.

The Navy, which maintains the airport, announced that the aerodrome would be closed for all civil and military flying between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. from April 5 to 8. Navy’s public relations officer Commander Prashant Mathur said flights were being rescheduled and measures taken to avoid inconvenience to passengers.

Jewellers’ strike turns violent

The three-week-old agitation by gold and jewellery traders against tax hikes in the budget on Monday turned violent as they clashed with the Mumbai police and disrupted trains in Ghaziabad.

Traders staged dharnas in several parts of the country, including at Jantar Mantar in the national capital and at Zaveri Bazaar in South Mumbai.

Rupee up against dollar in early trade

The rupee gained 31 paise to Rs 50.56 against the American currency on the Interbank Foreign Exchange market in early trade on Tuesday on increased foreign fund inflows amid firm equity markets.

Dealers said besides increased foreign funds inflows, gains in euro and Asian currencies against the US currency in the overseas market supported the rupee.

The rupee had closed 53 paise higher at 50.87/88 against the dollar in the previous session on Friday following government’s assurance that it will not tax equity investments through participatory notes (P-Notes).

Pre-Matric Minority scholarships granted

(Siasat News) Minority students studying in 1st to 10th classes in Govt. and aided schools of A.P. during the year 2011-2012 have been granted scholarships under Govt. of India Pre-Matric scholarships scheme by A.P. State Minorities Finance Corporation.

These scholarships won’t be released until the receipts of previously paid scholarship are produced to the corporation.

All the concerned headmasters and principals are requested to submit the details of fees reimbursement and scholarships to the corporation within three days pertaining to the academic year 2010-2011.

CBI challenges Rajesh Talwar’s bail in Allahabad HC

The Allahabad High Court will on Tuesday hear an application filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), challenging the Ghaziabad CBI court’s order extending the bail of Rajesh Talwar in the double murder case of his 13-year-old daughter Aarushi Talwar and domestic help Hemraj.

The CBI court in Ghaziabad had last month allowed Talwar to remain on bail till April 11, referring to the Supreme Court’s observation that the accused father was virtually on bail.

Sachin quits as Mumbai Indians skipper

Sachin Tendulkar has surrendered the captaincy of the Mumbai Indians IPL team, handing it over to Harbhajan Singh. The changeover, the team management said, was smooth. Harbhajan will now lead from the beginning of the IPL V, which takes off on April 4 with a match between MI and Chennai Super Kings.

Wife raped by hitmen she hired

A 39-year-old woman living near India’s eastern metropolis Kolkata, was allegedly raped by men she had hired to murder her husband.

The woman was involved in a clandestine affair with a man 14 years her junior. She had hired the goons with his help, reports The Times of India.

Police officials smelt something fishy when the woman refused to file a rape complaint even though medical report proved that she was sexually assualted. It was her 14-year-old son who told the police that she was gang raped.

No proof of existence of graves at Qila: High Court

Citing lack of evidence to prove the existence of graves on survey no. 40 in Naya Qila, the AP High Court declared that it found no merit in allegations made by heritage activists that the Hyderabad Golf Association (HGA) had encroached on the Mustafa Khan Mosque or desecrated graves around it.

The writ petition was filed by heritage activists on November 1 last year stating that HGA was developing the golf course in the area by destroying graves.

Woman commits suicide after fight with husband

Enraged over her husband’s choice of tutor for their daughter, a 39-year-old woman in west Delhi committed suicide, police said Monday.

According to police, Tejinder Kaur and Jasbir Singh’s 14-year-old daughter had failed in her Class 9 examinations and worried by her poor performance, Singh took her to his sister for tuition.

Apparently, Kaur didn’t agree with her husband’s choice of tutor and committed suicide by hanging from a fan in their Vikas Puri home.

However, police claim there had been tension between the two previously.

IPL Does Not Affect Film Releases, Says Salman Khan

Salman Khan claims that cricket extravaganza IPL will not affect film releases.

The actor, who would be performing at the opening ceremony of the fifth season of IPL in Chennai on April 4, is all excited about the tournament.

When asked if the film releases would be affected due to IPL, Salman said, “I don’t think so….one of my films, ‘Biwi No 1’, was released during the World Cup, and it did well.”
