In view of the recent communal violence in Sangareddy in neighbouring Medak district and the prevailing uneasy calm in the Old City, police are likely to deny VHP leader Praveen Togadia permission to participate in the Hanuman Jayanthi rally on April 6.

US hopeful of reopening NATO routes from Pak to Afghan

Amid a crucial review of Pak-US ties by Pakistani lawmakers, the US on Tuesday expressed the hope that Islamabad would soon open the crucial supply NATO route to Afghanistan.

“With respect to the ground supply routes into Afghanistan, we remain hopeful that those routes will be reopened in the near future, and discussions with the Pakistanis continue on a range of issues,” Pentagon press secretary George Little said.

The supply routes were closed last November after Pakistani soldiers were killed in a NATO cross border fire.

Woman keeps dead baby in fridge for five years

A Russian woman has been found guilty of killing her newborn baby and keeping its body for five years in a freezer.

A court in Arkhangelsk in northern Russia established that 37-year-old Lyudmila Smirnova gave birth to a baby girl at her home in January 2007 and then proceeded to smother it with a cloth.

She then put the body into deepfreeze, keeping it there until Dec 29, 2011, when it was pulled out by her male companion, who thought it was meat.

Smirnova admitted her guilt.

23 persons injured in two different road accidents

At least 15 persons,many of them mobile fruit vendors, were injured, four of them seriously, when a speeding car ran over them at Kothapet fruit market area near Dilsukhnagar here early today. Police said a software company employee at Gachibowli, who was returning home in his car after work,lost control of his vehicle and ran over them, at the busy fruit market junction when the mishap occured. The injured were shifted to the local government hospital. A case of rash and negligent driving was registered against the IT company employee.

Jaffer Sharief wants judicial probe into Wakf Scam

Former Union Minister and Senior Congress Leader C K Jaffer Sharief today demanded judicial inquiry into allegations of his involvement in encroachment of wakf property in Karnataka. Wakf Commission Chairman Anwar Manpady, in a report, had alleged more than Rs two lakh crore worth Wakf property had been encroached upon by VIPs, politicians, MNCs and educational institutions. Mr Sharief said the report appeared to be not on detailed enquiry and true facts.

Fiancee murdered after raped by her own lover

In a rare case, a fiancee was raped and murdered by her own lover at Kalghatagi, about 30 km from here. Police said the accused Basavaraj alias Ishwarappa Bagewadi had thrown the body into a ditch before fleeing from the scene. Basavaraj was in love with Preeti Venkat Sing since a very long time. One day he allegedly persuaded her to travel along with him to Mangalore and Calicut in Kerala. As he reached a nearby village Devikoppa in Kalghatagi taluka he raped and strangulated her to death in a field. He threw her body in a ditch and escaped, the police said.

Pakistani camel ‘Musharraf’ dies

Musharraf, a Pakistani camel who was caught smuggling RDX into Indian territory from Pakistan some 13 years ago, died at police headquarters here this morning. The 40-year-old animal died a natural death, the police said. The camel Musharraf, who was caught when he sneaked into country with RDX in 1998, had been in custody of Kutch police here. Three smugglers, who were with the animal at that time, had managed to flee. According to the police, the camel was a trained animal and he could hide himself when unknown persons try to go near him.

Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Mohammad Saeed, who has been named among the world’s five most wanted terrorists by the US, has re-emerged as a key player in Pakistan’s jihadi politics after a brief setback in the wake of the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

Though Saeed was briefly placed under house arrest after the Mumbai incident, largely due to pressure from the West and the UN Security Council, the 61-year-old militant ideologue staged a powerful comeback last year by uniting over 40 hardline and extremist groups under the umbrella of the Defa-e-Pakistan Council (DPC).

Yemeni Airstrikes Kill 43 Al-Qaeda Militants

Yemeni government forces regained control of a strategic gateway in the south today after intense three-day shelling of al-Qaeda hideouts in the area that left 43 militants dead, military and medical officials said.

The military had stepped up attacks and airstrikes against al-Qaeda in the mountainous area of al-Rahha in the southern province of Lahj, a strategically important region that links the south with Yemen’s northern cities.

The offensive followed two surprise attacks by militants on Yemeni army bases in the area.

80-Year-Old Woman Lands Plane With Pilot Unconscious

An 80-year-old woman was able to successfully land a twin-engine airplane in north eastern Wisconsin after her husband became unconscious at the controls and died.

Door County Sheriff Terry Vogel says the dispatch centre was told just after 5 pm Monday that a Cessna about 6 miles south of Sturgeon Bay had declared an emergency.

The pilot, an 81-year-old man from the Sturgeon Bay area, had suffered a medical emergency and was unconscious. His wife, who was the passenger, was flying the plane.

Bypolls’ notification in August: Bhanwar Lal

State Chief Election Commissioner Bhanwar Lal has said that the bye-elections’ notification pertaining to the 18 Assembly constituencies and one Lok Sabha seat may be issued in August.

Bhanwar Lal had a meeting with all political parties, district officials of three constituencies in the district where bye-elections to be held.

Lorry owners plea to government

The Ranga Reddy District Lorry Owners Association has urged the State government to allow them to transport sand.

Speaking to the media here on Tuesday, Association members said that the labourers depending on sand quarrying were on the road due to the stoppage of sand quarrying. They demanded that the State government permit sand quarrying as usual. Expressing concern over the stoppage of sand quarrying, the Association members said that it would have severe impact on construction sector.

MET office forecasts increase in temp in state

The Meteorological Department here has informed that there was a chance of increase in temperature level in the coming two days.

According to the officials of the Department, on Tuesday, Adilabad and Mahabubnagar recorded highest temperature in the State with 41 degrees. Medak, Nizamabad and Kurnool stood second recording 40 degrees. Kadapa, Ananthapuram and Hyderabad recorded 39 degrees, Tirupati, Vijayawada 38 degrees, Visakha 35 degrees.

They said that there was a possibility of increase in heat wave conditions in the State, following the increase in temperatures. (NSS)
