Sudden firing at a businessman in Vanasthalipuram

Last night, in Vanasthalipuram area of Cyberabad some unknown persons opened fire at Wood world Furniture Shop owner MR. Mohammed Jehangir. The miscreants fired four rounds which wounded seriously the shop owner. He was rushed to the nearby corporate hospital where his condition is reported to be critical.

Police reached the spot on receiving the information and seized the revolver used in firing incident. Intelligence team of Cyberabad police also collected evidence on the spot.

Defence Ministry dismisses ‘coup’ report

The Defence Ministry was today dismissive about a media report that the Army moved two units towards Delhi in January without informing the government, saying such exercises are conducted from time to time.

“The points raised in the report have already been clarified by the Army…such exercises are conducted by the Army from time to time,” Defence Ministry spokesperson Sitanshu Kar said in a statement.

China bridge becomes world’s highest and longest

The Anzhaite Long-span Suspension Bridge in Jishou was officially opened to motorists Tuesday, Daily Mail reported.

CAPTAIN Mahela Jayawardene scored his second century in consecutive Tests as Sri Lanka recovered from an early slump to reach 238- 6 against England at stumps on the opening day of the second cricket Test in Colombo on Tuesday.

Crazy World: Mum drives with baby in purse

Police in the US Virgin Islands say they have caught a woman driving with her newborn baby zipped up in her handbag.

A police statement says an officer pulled over a woman driving a pick-up during a routine traffic stop.

While asking for the woman’s licence, the officer heard a baby crying but could not see a baby seat in the vehicle.

The motorist then allegedly unzipped her handbag which was on the seat next to her and revealed a tiny newborn.

India’s first N-submarine to be unveiled today

After a gap of two decades, India is all set to join the elite club of nations having nuclear-powered submarines with the induction of the Russian-origin ‘Nerpa’ into the Navy Wednesday.

Defence Minister AK Antony will formally commission the Akula II class Nerpa rechristened INS Chakra into the Navy at the Ship Building Complex here, Defence Ministry officials said here.

India has earlier leased and operated Charlie Class Russian nuclear submarine from 1988 for training its personnel on such submarines.

CPI(M) party congress begins today

For the first time, former West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has decided to skip the CPI(M) party congress beginning at Kozhikode on Wednesday, amid speculation that he wanted to be relieved of his membership in the central committee and politburo.

Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has communicated his inability to attend the party congress to CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat, party sources said.

Bhattacharjee was personally requested by Karat to attend the party congress, they said.

23 Indian fishermen arrested by Pakistani naval authorities

Twenty-three Indian fishermen were arrested and four of their boats seized for fishing
“illegally” in Pakistani territorial waters, an official said.

The Indian fishermen were arrested after being warned twice that they had entered into Pakistan’s territorial
waters and were fishing there illegally, a spokesman for the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency said here yesterday.

“After the warning these fishermen were arrested and their boats seized. They will be presented before a judicial
magistrate on Wednesday,” the official said.

SC to hear petitions against Chidambaram

The Supreme Court on Wednesday will hear two different pleas that seek investigation into Union Home Minister P Chidambaram’s alleged role in the 2G spectrum allocation scam.

The first petition against Chidambaram was filed by Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy, while the second has been filed by lawyer-activist Prashant Bhushan.

The petition by Swamy says that Chidambaram must be held responsible for allowing 2G spectrum allocation at 2011 prices during his tenure as the country’s Finance Minister.

Policeman caught ‘stealing’ motorbike

A policeman has been caught on camera allegedly stealing a motorbike from a residential society compound in Pune. The bike owner, Avinash Deshmukh, filed a police complaint after finding his two-wheeler missing on Tuesday morning. He also decided to have a look at the footage of the CCTV camera installed in the compound.

“In the footage of last night, I saw a policeman removing the bike from the parking lot,” he said. The footage shows a policeman in uniform along with a man in plainclothes removing a motorbike from the parking lot of the Dahanukar Colony.

Pvt medical colleges can fill vacant NRI seats: SC

Unaided medical colleges can fill up their vacant NRI quota seats with meritorious general quota candidates, determined through their own entrance tests, the Supreme Court has held.

A three-judge bench of justices Deepak Verma, BS Chauhan and KS Radhakrishnan passed the interim order permitting some private medical colleges in Madhya Pradesh to fill up their vacant NRI seats for 2012-13, pending a constitution bench’s decision on a bunch of appeals on the issue.

Heavy petrol sale in Goa after reduction in VAT

Slashing of petrol prices in Goa has resulted in massive boost in sales at fuel outlets in the state, officials have said.

Various petrol pumps have registered almost two-fold increase in sales in the last two days.

The State’s new BJP-led Government has reduced VAT (value-added tax) on petrol from 20 per cent to mere 0.1 per
cent. The decision, announced in the budget presented last month by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, has come into effect from yesterday.

The reduction has resulted in heavy rush at fuel stations in the tourist state.

Kayani visits Saudi Arabia

Pakistan Army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani is on an official visit to Saudi Arabia, where he will hold talks on bilateral relations, especially defence and security cooperation, a military spokesman said on Tuesday.

Kayani left for Saudi Arabia last night though an official announcement was made only this morning. The powerful army chief is scheduled to meet the senior civil and military leadership of Saudi Arabia, the spokesman said.

“Discussions will be focused on bilateral relations, with emphasis on security and defence aspects,” the spokesman said.

Thieves cart away ATM with Rs 20 lakh

A gang of thieves on Tuesday took away an ATM machine loaded with around Rs 20 lakh from Maninagar area, police said. “Instead of bothering to open the ATM machine and take away the cash, thieves decamped with the entire machine belonging to SBI,” they said.

The incident happened early on Tuesday morning, they said, adding that the ATM outlet had no security guard and the CCTV cameras installed there were non-functional.

The thieves also tried to cart another ATM machine installed in the same premises but failed to uproot it from the ground, they added.

One child sex attack was reported every 20 minutes last year, police figures out today show. About 23,000 children were reported victims in England and Wales during 2010/11 but fewer than 10 per cent of cases ended in a conviction. There were 4,973 alleged victims aged ten and under, including 1,472 younger than six.

And six times as many reported offences were committed against girls as against boys.
The statistics, obtained by the NSPCC in a freedom of information request, cover rape, incest and child prostitution across all 43 police forces in England and Wales.
