US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrives in Saudi Arabia on Friday for talks to weigh limited options available to end the violence in Syria and launch a “strategic forum” with Gulf allies against a backdrop of growing tensions with Iran.

The world’s main superpower and its top oil exporter have been strategic allies since the 1940s, but deep disagreements over how to tackle the Arab popular uprisings last year strained the relationship.

Phoney cops in Mumbai target seniors again

A Mumbai-based gang that poses as policemen and targets senior citizens has struck again in the capital. In a span of 30 minutes, the gang targeted a senior citizen and the wife of an army officer in Malviya Nagar who were both robbed of their valuables.

Police say the gang belongs to Mumbai and visits the city every second month to commit crimes in quick succession in upscale Delhi localities. The gang then returns to Mumbai by the next flight before police get a clue about their whereabouts.

Lok Sabha clears judicial accountability bill

The Lok Sabha on Thursday cleared the judicial accountability legislation that seeks to set up a credible mechanism to probe complaints of misbehaviour by judges.

The Judicial Standards and Accountability Bill, 2010, and Constitutional 114th Amendment Bill, 2010, will help setting new probity standards in higher judiciary.

The bill seeks to establish credible and expedient mechanism for probing into individual complaints for misbehaviour or incapacity of a judge of the Supreme Court or of a High Court.

More Chinese investments in India soon

China has committed to facilitating Indian exports into Chinese markets to address the yawning trade imbalance between the two countries. Chinese president Hu Jintao said this to Manmohan Singh in his hour-long meeting with the PM at the end of the BRICS summit on Thursday. This will be Hu’s last summit as Chinese president. In return, the PM invited Chinese investment in manufacturing and infrastructure projects in India. Chinese companies are kept out of several strategic sectors, but there is a significant change in the Indian government’s approach to Chinese investment.

Osama bin Laden spent nine years on the run in Pakistan after the September 11 attacks, during which time he moved among five safe houses and fathered four children, at least two of whom were born in a government hospital, his youngest wife has told Pakistani investigators.

16 cops get life terms for fake encounter in UP

Twenty years after a case of staged shootout, a CBI court in Ghaziabad on Thursday held 17 policemen guilty and sentenced 16 of them to life imprisonment, making it perhaps the largest number of cops convicted for life at one go in the country. They were convicted of killing an alleged Sikh militant, Jaivender Singh Jasna of Amritsar, in a fake encounter in 1992.

One of them was given a seven-year sentence. All 17 were fined Rs 5,000 each.

Jasna, a “sewadar” (worker) at Gurdwara Rakabganj in New Delhi, was gunned down by a team of 17 policemen in Bardpur, Bijnore, on October 31, 1992.

American city ‘condemns’ Gujarat riots

A US City Council has passed a resolution condemning the 2002 post-Godhra riots in Gujarat and expressed concern over the denial of justice for the victims.

The resolution, passed this week by the City Council of Harvey, Illinois, expressed solidarity with the victims, including those who died in the Godhra train fire on February 27, 2002.

Car carrying Rs two crore seized near Ranchi

A car carrying over Rs two crore was on Friday seized from the outskirts of Ranchi, police said.

“The car carrying over Rs two crore was seized near Namkum. The owner of the car is said to be from a sponge iron factory in Jamshedpur,” Senior Superintendent of Police Saket Kumar Singh told PTI.

The car was seized during a joint operation by the police and IT sleuths.

Asked whether there were any names of important persons found in the car, Singh said investigations were on.

Govt. Maternity Hospital – No facilities

Lack of basic medical facilities in Govt. hospitals is causing a lot of inconvenience to the patients. A few years back the new Govt. Maternity Hospital was constructed at Petla Bridge near City College and it was claimed by the Govt. that it is a big deed of the Govt. and a gift to the Old City of Hyderabad.

Nearly 1000-1200 pregnant women come to this hospital for confinement. Most of whom belong to poor families. These women come to this hospital to make use of the facilities provided by the Govt.

Many innocent youths belonging to Muslims, Sikhs and other weaker sections are being targeted without any proof and fictitious criminal cases are being booked against them. They are imprisoned for months together without filing charge sheets in the courts. (Siasat News): In a bizarre incident, two persons who were jealous of the prosperity of their common friend, killed him. This incident occurred in Uppal police station limits where 20-year-old Kishan was killed by none other than his friends Veenu and Santosh.

Kishan was an auto driver but during the past one year or so, he had started the business of selling phenyle and acid. Since he was occupied, he could not spare time to meet his friends.

Google plans low-price tablet computer

Google is teaming with Asia-based hardware makers on a low-priced, 7-inch tablet computer to challenge offerings by Amazon.com and Apple, reports said Thursday.

Android software backed by the California Internet giant will power hardware built by partners including Samsung and Asustek to compete with iPad and Kindle devices, according to Digitimes and the Wall Street Journal.

An Asustek tablet could be released as early as May with a price of $199 to make it an option for shoppers considering the Kindle Fire made by Amazon.com, said Digitimes.

UP Govt is not ‘Mulayam’ to Mayawati, her projects lose homeguards

The Samajwadi Party government on Thursday withdrew over 450 homeguards deployed for the security of various memorials and parks built in the city the name of dalit icons by previous chief minister Mayawati. An inquiry has also been ordered to find out under what circumstances the previous regime had decided to demolish the Parikalp Nagar residential colony meant for irrigation department engineers. The colony was demolished for expansion of the eco-garden project which was later merged with Budh Vihar Shanti Upvan.

YSR Govt. Land scam: Costs Andhra Rs.1 Lakh Crore: CAG

Providing fodder to the CBI probing the various land allotments in the state during the YSR government, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has concluded that the Andhra Pradesh government doled out thousands of acres of government land to private individuals on an ad hoc and arbitrary manner without safeguarding the interests of the state. The CAG report for the year ending March 31, 2011, was tabled in the assembly on Thursday.

Falak Case: Police pass buck over sex racket

Failing to achieve any breakthrough in the child sex racket which emerged out of the baby Falak case, the Delhi Police have now started passing the buck.

The south- east district police, who have been investigating the case, now say the south- district police should look into the matter.

Considering the police’s apparent inaction in investigating the allegedly rampant child trafficking and abuse in the city, the child welfare committee ( CWC) has recommended that the case be transferred to the anti- human trafficking cell of the Delhi Police Crime Branch.
