Minister defends VAT on food items

Minister for Roads and Transport Dharmana Prasad Rao informed the State Legislative Council that several hotels in the State including Star Hotels in Hyderabad have been collecting the service charges on the food items from the customers.

Replying to a question raised by D Rajaseshwar Rao, he said that it was also an fact that VAT was imposed even on the service charges. Disclosing the reasons, he said the sale price of food item, including service charges, if any, mentioned in the bill of sale was liable to VAT under Section 4(9) of AP Vat Act. (INN)

Works on for laying of underground power cables in GHMC

Minister for Information Technology Ponnala Laxmaiah informed the State Legislative Council that it was fact that the underground cable system of 220 KV and 132 KV works have been taken up in GHMC area with the funds of Japanese Bank International Cooperation Agency and Power Finance Corporation.

Govt admits paying nominal part of MV Tax to local bodies

Minister for Municipal Administration M Mahidhar Reddy on Tuesday admitted that the State Government itself was levying and collecting Motor Vehicle Tax and allocating a very nominal part of it to the municipal bodies.

Replying to a question raised by MIM MLCs Syed Alfaq Hyder Rizvi and Syed Aminul Hasan Jafri, he said that it was fact the Second Finance Commission has recommended that 10 percent of Motor Vehicle Tax realized by the State Government be given to the urban local bodies including the GHMC.

Deoband fatwa on investment in share market

Outlining six norms for investment in capital market by Muslims, Islamic seminary Darul Uloom Deoband has said followers can invest in the equity of a company which is not involved in production of liquor and interest-based businesses.

Mufti Fakhrul Islam while issuing a fatwa said Muslim can invest in those companies which have movable as well as immovable properties.

The seminary said that a part of the profit should be distributed among the poor. Besides, it has also advocated for taking informed decisions before making investments in the equity market.

TRS asks Centre to clear its stand on Telangana

Telangana Rashtra Samithi MLA K Taraka Rama Rao on Tuesday demanded that the Centre make its stand clear on Telangana statehood issue.

Talking to media persons at Assembly media point, Rama Rao raised serious objection over Union Home Minister P Chidambaram for repeatedly stating that the Centre could not take any decision until stakeholders does not make their stand clear on the issue. He asked Chidambaram to honour his promise if he was really committed on the statehood issue.

HM admits of illegal clubs in city

Home Minister P Sabitha Indira Reddy admitted that several clubs were being run illegally in the State, particularly in the limits of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation.

In her reply to a question raised by MLAs K Srisailam Goud and A Rajender during Question Hour on Tuesday, the minister said that playing cards and other illegal activities were taking place in the clubs situated in the outskirts of Hyderabad City, in the name of farm houses. She said regular raids were being conducted and several cases have been booked against those activities. (INN)

Cabinet sub-committee to study SC, ST sub-plan demand

Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Tuesday announced the constitution of a cabinet sub-committee to look into the demand for having a sub-plan for the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in the State.

Making the announcement in the State Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, the Chief Minister said that the cabinet sub-committee would study the allocation, utilisation and non-usage of funds meant for the SCs and STs in the State. While the SCs were allocated 16.23 per cent of the funds, the STs were given 6.27 per cent of the total funds.

Akheel Khilji (45) and Mohammed Jafar Hussain Qureshi (32), former members of banned outfit SIMI, were apprehended by ATS from their rented house at Pimpalgaon village in Buldhana in central Maharashtra, police said.

Babbar Khalsa terrorist Balwant Singh Rajoana, sentenced to death in the 1995 assassination of then Punjab chief minister Beant Singh, is to hang as scheduled on March 31, a Chandigarh court ruled Tuesday as opposition began building up in some places in Punjab to protest the hanging.

As per the court’s orders, Rajoana has to be hanged Saturday (March 31) at 9 a.m. in the Patiala jail premises.

‘No Entry Main Entry’ to go on floors soon

Filmmaker Anees Bazmee, who is trying to finish the script of “No Entry” sequel, says he wants to start the shooting of the film as soon as possible.

The sequel is titled “No Entry Main Entry”.

“I will take one more month to finish the script. Once I finish scripting, we will start shooting as soon as possible. I can’t wait to shoot the film. It’s going to be a laugh riot,” Bazmee told IANS.

“The film has a huge star cast, so we want to lock the dates of the stars before we go on floors,” he added saying male leads have been finalised, but he has yet to decide on actresses.

Manmohan to examine Gilani’s request for exporting power from Punjab

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has assured his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani that he will look into his request for supplying electricity from the Indian state of Punjab.

Manmohan Singh also thanked Gilani for granting India most favoured nation (MFN) status, but told him he has no plans to visit the neighbouring country unless something “solid” can be achieved.
