US City Council passes resolution condemning 2002 Guj riots

A US City Council has passed a resolution condemning the 2002 post-Godhra riots in Gujarat and expressed concern over the “denial” of justice for the victims.

The resolution, passed this week by the City Council of Harvey, Illinois, expressed solidarity with the victims,
including those who died in the Godhra train fire on February 27, 2002.

Two held in connection with theft at pawn broker’s shop

Two persons were arrested today and gold ornaments weighing 6.5 kg and five kg of silver stolen by
them from a pawn broker’s shop near Ilayankudi in this district seized, police said.

Police said they zeroed in on the two after studying the footage on the CCTV camera installed in a shop at
Tiruchirappalli which they attempted to burgle.

The two, Raja and Manoharan, were engaged in stealing scrap iron from factories and selling them.

Sub-Engineer arrested for accepting bribe of Rs 12,000

Lokayukta Police today arrested a sub-engineer of Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) for allegedly accepting a bribe for Rs 12,000 from a contractor, an official said.

Chandra Kant Kumawat had demanded a bribe of Rs 50,000 from the contractor to release latter’s bills amounting to Rs
8.40 lakh, the official said.

Kumawat was trapped when he was accepting a part of the bribe money, he said, adding a case under Prevention of
Corruption Act was filed against the sub-engineer.

Retired army employee commits suicide

A 55-year old retired army employee today allegedly committed suicide at his residence in Indraprashtha Extension in East Delhi, police said.

The deceased has been identified as P K Robin, police said.

He was found hanging at his home in MAMC complex at around 3pm, they said adding he used to work at a retail
outlet in Patparganj area.

Cong objects to Uddhav’s media interaction within Vidhan Bhavan

Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has taken objection to Shiv Sena working president Uddhav Thackeray’s media interaction at the Vidhan Bhavan premises after his meeting with Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan yesterday.

spokesman Sachin Sawant demanded action against the Sena leader.

Hazare backs Kejriwal over remarks against MPs

Social activist Anna Hazare today claimed his teammate Arvind Kejriwal had “concrete proof” regarding charges of corruption against parliamentarians and it was up to the Lok Sabha Speaker to conduct an inquiry into them.

“Arvind has told me that he has concrete proof about charges of corruption in respect of parliamentarians.
Parliament is a sacred temple of democracy and therefore these charges should be inquired into by the Speaker,” he told a Marathi TV channel at his native village Ralegan Siddhi near here after returning from Delhi.

Britain announces 60 new scholarships for Indians

British Prime Minister David Cameron Wednesday announced 60 new “Jubilee Scholarships” to be awarded in India for one-year masters course in Britain, a statement said.

Funded by the British Council and the British government, the scholarships have been launched as part of the celebrations for Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee. The aim is to enable exceptional talent from across India to come and study masters courses in business, administration, manufacturing, science or technology.

Egyptian parliamentary delegation visits Gaza

An Egyptian parliamentary delegation arrived on Wednesday in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip for a visit.

The delegation crossed from Egypt to Gaza on Wednesday through Rafah crossing point on the borders between the Gaza Strip and Egypt, and will hold meetings with leaders of Islamic Hamas movement, reported Xinhua.

Mohamed Idrees, head of the Arab Affairs Committee in the Egyptian parliament, told a news conference in Gaza that the delegation includes 28 lawmakers, including Islamist lawmakers.

It is the committee’s first visit to Gaza, Idrees said.

FBI Islamic training materials gave OK to infringe on targets’ civil rights

Training materials used by the FBI for dealing with American Muslims and other Islamic communities have advised agents they can break the law and impinge on some of their targets’ civil rights.

The instructions were contained in confidential materials reviewed by the Senate Judiciary Committee as part of an internal FBI probe into what sort of training agents were exposed to when dealing with Islam.

The investigation uncovered 876 pages and 392 presentations that failed to meet standards or could be considered offensive amid more than 160,000 pages of FBI documents and slides.
