Women given husbands’ pay to stop affairs

Thousands of male Indonesian civil servants had their monthly pay transferred to their wives’ bank accounts this week in a bid by a local government to stop men having affairs.

The Gorontalo administration on northern Sulawesi island issued the recommendation early this year to its 3,200 civil servants, saying it would help control funds usually spent on mistresses.

“Men are usually unable to control their behaviour if they have too much money in their pocket,” government spokesman Rifly Katili told AFP.

2 Indians dead, 22 hurt in Malaysia road accident

Two Indians were killed and 22 others injured when a speeding tourist bus carrying them lost control and overturned on a winding mountain road in western Malaysia today.

The bus carrying 24 people, including two drivers, lost control, hit the road divider and crashed on the other side of the road at the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Highway while coming down from the hill resort of Genting Highlands.

All the passengers were from Punjab.

The fatalities were a woman in her 50s and a man, who died on the way to the hospital.

Saudia looking for Indian pilots

Saudi Arabian Airlines Company (Saudia) placed an ad in a leading Indian newspaper looking for pilots to employ, Assistant Director General of the airlines Abdullah bin Mushabab Al-Ajhar said.

“We are looking for 120 pilots from India and other Asian countries to employ with monthly salaries ranging between SR30,000 and SR37,000 in addition to a number of fringe benefits, including accommodation,” he told local newspapers yesterday.

Al-Ajhar said the captains would be piloting various types of aircraft including Airbus 320, Boeing 777, Embraer aircraft and cargo planes.

Quake jolts Delhi, adjoining areas

An earthquake of medium intensity jolted Delhi and its satellite towns this afternoon, pulling panic-stricken people out of their homes and offices.

The tremors, measuring 4.9 on the Richter Scale with Haryana’s Bahadurgarh as epicentre, were felt across Delhi and its adjoining satellite towns of Ghaziabad and Noida in Uttar Pradesh at a 1.11pm, the MeT office said.

The quake took place 9km below the surface. The tremors were felt for less than ten seconds.

“The intensity was 4.9 and the epicentre was Bahadurgarh, Delhi-Haryana Border,” a senior MeT official said.

Earthquake felt in Delhi, other parts of north India

Tremors were felt in New Delhi and the adjoining NCR region in Noida, Faridabad, Ghaziabad and Gurgaon today. The tremors were also felt in parts of Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. The earthquake occurred at about 1.11pm.

The earthquake measured 4.9 on the richter scale, according to TV reports. The epicentre was at Bahudargarh close to the Delhi-Haryana border. The tremors were felt for about 15-20 seconds.

There have been no reports of loss of life or property, so far. Chances of aftershocks are not very high.

Thirst saved Wife and Child

Santosh was going on a motor cycle with his wife and child at national highway near Taroora village on the way to Bhainsa from Nanded.

When his wife felt thirsty he stopped his motorcycle and left her to fetch water. When he was going towards the petrol bunk, a lorry hit him from behind and he was killed instantly.

Govt set to increase scholarship coverage for SC students

Buoyed by the success of the post- matric scholarship schemes for Scheduled Caste (SC) students, the government is all set to increase its coverage for 48 lakh school children by end of this fiscal and has exceeded its budget for the purpose by more than Rs 100 crore.

The Post-Matric Scholarship scheme was introduced by the government to provide financial assistance to SC students studying at post matriculation or post-secondary stages to enable them to complete their education.

MRPL plans 44% cut in Iran oil imports: Report

After China and Japan, India’s oil firm Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) is mulling to cut its annual import deal with Iran by 44 percent, an international news agency reported on Monday.

Reportedly, the 44 percent or 80,000 barrels per day (bpd) oil import cut would roughly estimate a reduction of more than 20 percent in India’s total purchases of Iranian oil in the next fiscal year.

The news agency has quoted their sources from the MRPL who plans the cut in imports of oil from Iran in the next fiscal year beginning April.

China scales down its GDP target first time in 7 years

Facing an economic down turn due to steady fall in exports, China for the first time in seven years projected a lower growth, scaling down its GDP growth target to 7.5 percent this year from last year’s eight percent.

The lower growth target was projected in the annual government work report delivered by Premier Wen Jiabao at China’s Legislature, the National People’s Congress here today.

This is the first time for the Chinese government to lower its economic growth target after keeping it around 8 percent for seven consecutive years.

6 Indians burnt to death in Oman vehicle collision

Six Indians were on Sunday burnt alive in a horrific head-on collision between two trucks near Mamur town in the north-west of Muscat in Oman.

Six Indians were killed and two Omanis seriously injured when two pickup trucks collided and one carrying six workers caught fire this evening, local media quoted a policeman as saying.

Four of the six died on the spot, while two succumbed to their burns in a hospital, Welfare Secretary with the Indian Social Club P M Jabir told Gulf News.

Iran increasing lethal aid to Syria: US daily

US daily Washington: Iran is increasing its aid, especially lethal assistance, to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for his crackdown on opposition forces, a US daily has said.

Three unnamed US officials with access to intelligence reports from the Middle East described a spike in Iranian-supplied arms and other aid to the Syrian government at a time when Damascus was mounting an unprecedented offensive to crush resistance in the key city of Homs, the Washington Post reported.

Iraq: 21 cops killed in checkpoint attacks

Fallujah, March 05: Gunmen killed 21 policemen in an attack on checkpoints in the western Iraqi city of Haditha on Monday, security and medical officials said.

Lieutenant Colonel Owaid Khalaf said dozens of attackers carried out the attacks at checkpoints across the city, beginning at around 0430 IST.

Five policemen were wounded in the concerted attacks, according to Khatab Omar, an official at Haditha hospital.

Pak woman paraded naked over marriage row

Lahore, March 05: A group of over three dozen men stripped a woman and paraded her naked around a village in Pakistan’s Punjab province after accusing her son of forcibly marrying a girl, police officials said on Sunday.

According to an FIR lodged with police, over three dozen men of the Gopang tribe raided the home of Manzooran Mai in Khundai village of Muzaffargarh district, 350 km from Lahore, yesterday and took the woman and her daughter-in-law Azra away with them.

Pak writes to Interpol for Red Corner notice for Mush

Pakistan’s Interior Ministry has written to France-based Interpol for a Red Corner Notice against former President Pervez Musharraf for his arrest and extradition to the country, Interior Minister Rehman Malik said on Sunday.

“We have sent a request to Interpol for the arrest of Pervez Musharraf,” Malik told journalists during an interaction at the National Press Club.

He gave no other details.

The request was sent to Interpol through its representative in Pakistan, the Dawn newspaper quoted its sources as saying.

In Champapet of Sayeedabad area, a Muslim youth by name Mohammed Feroz (25) was electrocuted when he came in contact with the high tension wire while fixing the board of Sri Gayatri Junior College.
