The CBI, probing into RTI activist Shehla Masood murder case, today recorded voice samples of prime accused Zahida Parvez and her accomplice Saba Faruqui. The agency took the voice samples of Zahida and Saba in the district jail where they are under a judicial custody till April 3.

Two cops suspended for slapping legislator

Jharkhand Chief Minister Arjun Munda announced suspension of two policemen accused of slapping a BJP legislator Thursday.

Uma Shankar Akela of BJP and Janardan Paswan a legislator of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) raised the issue in post lunch session of the assembly.

“We were going to Birsa roundabout to join an agitation. The gate was closed and we requested the Sub Inspector (SI) to open the gate. The SI misbehaved with us. When we revealed our identity then we were abused.”

“One Assistant Sub Inspector came on the spot and slapped me,” Akela said.

37 Indian activists detained in Lebanon

A group of 37 Indians, including 10 women, who were to participate in a pro-Palestine global march to Jerusalem, have been detained by Lebanese authorities at Beirut port.

Indian activists and journalists participating in the Global March to Jerusalem (GMJ), along with three Filipinos and one Iraqi have been asked not to leave the 246-seater boat which docked at Beirut on Wednesday at 9 am (IST).

The GMJ’s local contacts had been assured that the delegation would be issued visas on arrival.

Witch hunting on the rise in Assam

Incidents of ‘witch hunting increased in Assam in 2011 with Kokrajhar district in lower Assam recording the highest number of witch hunting-related deaths in the year, a lawmaker said Thursday.

The issue was raised in the state assembly by Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF) legislator Pramila Rani Brahma. Brahma, who represents Kokrajhar constituency, also demanded a strong legislation to stop the social evil.

Andhra Pradesh most unsafe state in South India

Andhra Pradesh has tagged as the most unsafe place among the four South Indian states, topping a list prepared by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) in number of cases of crimes against women.

According to data collected by NCRB, Andhra Pradesh accounted for 1,257, 1,189 and 1,362 rape cases since last three years. Report said that Andhra Pradesh has more than double the number of cases registered when compared to the other three states- Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

YSR Congress Party leader done to death

YSR Congress Party Leader Bandi Venkateswara Rao was murdered by unidentified miscreants at Chitturupu Village in Ghantasala Mandal of Krishna District today.

Police said the victim was a member in the steering committee of YSR Congress Party and was a popular leader in the area.

The miscreants waylaid and hacked him to death on the outskirts of the village.

NABARD releases Rs 10 cr under handloom package to APCOB

National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has released Rs 10 crore to Andhra Pradesh Co-Operative Bank (APCOB) under the revival package for Handloom Sector towards recapitalising the Andhra Pradesh State Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society (APCO).

Under the scheme about one lakh weavers of the state in the Cooperative sector as well as as individual weavers would be benefited, a release from NABARD said here today. As many as 1488 APCO societies wiping out their accumulated losses. The package also proposed recapitalization and fresh credit flow to the weavers.

Crocodile gets caught in fishermen’s net

A 6 ft long crocodile got caught in fishermen’s net while they were fishing in a tank at Dodduru village in Krosuru mandal of the district today.

Divisional Forest Officer P Srinivas Rao said the fishermen informed the forest officials. The crocodile weighed about 55 KG. The villagers were surprised how a giant crocodile had slipped into the tank. The forest official suspect that the crocodile would have been carried away by flood waters and pushed into the tank. They were taking steps to release it safely in a river. UNI

9 PSUs incurring losses of Rs 684,39 Cr in AP

Twenty eight Public Sector Undertakings of Andhra Pradesh have earned a profit of Rs 922.95 crore while nine incurred a loss of Rs 684.39 crores during the year 2010-11, a report of the Comptroller and Auditor General said today. The report placed in the State Assembly today said during 2010-11, there were 48 working PSUs and 24 non-working PSUs which employed 2.64 lakh employees, the report said the working PSUs registered a turnover of Rs 61,476.93 crore, which is equal to 10.83 per cent of state GDP.

BJP condemns State for not discussing public issues

BJP Floor Leader E Laxminarayana on Thursday blamed the government for not taking up any pressing issues for discussion in the budget session of the Assembly.

Talking to media persons at Assembly Media Point, he said that though there were many public issues including drought, power, Telangana, farmers and corruption, it failed to discuss them. “There is no meaning of running the House if the government forces the Speaker to adjourn it abruptly without discussing people’s issues,” he said.

Godavari waters to reach city by Dec 2013

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board on Thursday claimed that the Godavari river water will reach Hyderabad by December 2013.

Talking to reporters during the visit to the project site, Godavari Drinking Water Supply Project – Phase I director M Satyanarayana said that the works on the first phase of the project were going as per the schedule. He said about 172 mgpd of Godavari water would be supplied to the city in the first phase.
