Allah Tattoo Angers Muslims: Concert of American Singer banned

Muslims-majority Malaysia on Tuesday, February 28, banned a concert by an American singer for drawing a tattoo on her body with the Arabic word for Allah.

“Our religion does not even permit the name of Allah to be brought into the bathroom, let alone be used as a tattoo,” Mashitah Ibrahim, a deputy minister in the prime minister’s department, told the New Straits Times.

“While Americans and non-Muslims view tattoos as an art form, the name of Allah should never be used that way.”

PC for separation of investigation, prosecution

Home Minister P Chidambaram on Tuesday strongly advocated separation of investigation and prosecution by amending the criminal justice system for speedy delivery of justice.

Addressing a meeting of the Consultative Committee of the Home Ministry, he said expeditious trial of cases has to be ensured by making necessary changes in procedure and a proposal to this effect has been sent to state governments for their approval.

Kudankulam protest leader sends legal notice to PM

After taking on the Indian nuclear establishment, People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) coordinator S.P. Udayakumar pitted himself against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, sending him a legal notice Tuesday following his comments on foreign NGOs funding the anti-Kudankalam stir.

In a recent interview to American magazine `Science’, the prime minister said that the protests against Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) coming up in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district were funded by NGOs based in the US and Scandinavian countries.

Probe Shiv Sena, NGOs leading Jaitapur protests: Congress

A day after the Shiv Sena attempted to gag eminent nuclear scientist Anil Kakodkar, the Congress hit back by demanding a probe into the funding pattern of the Sena and the NGOs spearheading the anti-nuclear protests in Maharashtra.

The demand came in a letter to Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office V. Narayanasamy from state Congress spokesman Sachin Sawant.

Two injured in Guwahati grenade blast

At least two people were injured in a blast that took place near the state secretariat in Assam’s Guwahati city on Tuesday evening.

The blast took place in Ganesh Gudi area of the city.

“At 6:20 p.m. a grenade blast took place. Two people have been injured in the blast,” said a police official.

According to initial reports, the blast was a low intensity grenade blast.

Further details into the incident are awaited.

Army chief’s visit to Israel cancelled

Army Chief General VK Singh’s visit to Israel next month has been cancelled because of “instability” in West Asian region, particularly Syria, Government said on Tuesday.

Singh’s three-day official visit to Israel was scheduled to start from March 16.

“Syria is restless and other things are happening in the region…,” Minister of State for Defence MM Pallam Raju told reporters here today while replying to a question on the reasons for cancellation of the visit by the Defence Ministry.

The 26/11 Mumbai terror attack involving Mohd Ajmal Amir Kasab was carried out with a “calculated” design, aimed at causing communal tension in the country by projecting that it was the handiwork of Indian Muslims, the Supreme Court was told on Tuesday.

“The terror attack was with a calculated design to pose that it was an attack by Indian Muslims.

This was their deliberate design to flare up communal tension in the country,” former Solicitor General Gopal Subramaniam and Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam submitted to a bench of justices Aftab Alam and C K Prasad.

US Troops Get ‘Cultural Training’ in Mosque

A group of American army soldiers have visited a mosque in Ohio to get a better understanding of Islam and different cultural backgrounds they might encounter in their future missions overseas.

“Our job is to win the hearts and minds,” Capt. Patrick Seaman told The Columbus Dispatch.
“I don’t want the first time they are talking to someone from another country or faith to be (while deployed).”

6-year-old girl burnt to death

A six-year-old girl has been burnt to death allegedly by her mother’s lover on the outskirts of Hyderabad. The girl was wrapped in a mattress and set on fire.

The girl succumbed to her injuries at a government hospital.

The suspect, identified as Vijay, is in police custody. The police are looking for the mother of the victim.

A case of murder has been registered, but the motive for the killing is yet to be ascertained.

Chinese FM to visit India to hold talks

Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jeichi will embark on a two-day visit to India from tomorrow during which he will hold talks with the Indian leadership over a host of bilateral and international issues.

Significantly, the visit comes in the backdrop of recent acrimony over Defence Minister A K Antony’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh to attend statehood celebrations.

Asked if the issue will figure in his talks in India, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hong Lei said his earlier comments that nothing should be done to “complicate” the border issue remain valid.

Budget does not reflect people’s aspirations: TDP

The 1,45,000 crore Jumbo-sized budget for 2012-13, presented by Finance Minister of the ‘Minority’ Congress government in Andhra Pradesh on February 17, lacked concentration and failed to reflect the aspirations of the people, Senior TDP leader Ravula Chandrasekhar Reddy said today. Participating in the debate on the budget in the Assembly, he said the Congress government headed by Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy had claimed that it had a majority with 136 members in its kitty, but it was in ‘minority’ after 16 Congress rebels voted against the government.

60 percent polling in sixth phase of UP assembly elections

Sixty percent polling was recorded Tuesday in the sixth phase of the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections in 68 constituencies across 13 districts, state chief electoral officer Umesh Sinha said.

In some places, at Saharanpur for instance, 64 percent of the elecorate had cast their ballots.

Palestinian Authority to reconsider all ties with Israel

Member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Hana Amira said the decision is in response to Israel’s repeated violations of bilateral agreements.

Amira also pointed out that the PA considers taking its case to the UN General Assembly and Security Council.

Last Friday, PA Chief Mahmoud Abbas said he planned to make “a dramatic announcement within 10 days” after talks with Israel failed.

The statement came after Tel Aviv refused to curb its settlement activities on occupied Palestinian lands in the West Bank.

Maid raped by employer’s three sons

Three Kuwaiti men took advantage of the absence of their father from home and raped his Ethiopian housemaid, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The father reported to the police that his maid had disappeared, triggering a police search through the capital, ‘Al Watan’ said.

“When she was found, she told police she ran away after she was raped by her employer’s three sons at home,” it said.
