Ahmedabad, February 24: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi had told the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team — which is probing some of the gruesome carnages during the 2002 communal riots in the State — that he never issued any instructions to top police officers to allow Hindus to “vent their anger” against Muslims in the aftermath of the Godhra train carnage.

Swamy demands PC’s resignation

New Delhi, February 24: As the Supreme Court castigated the Delhi Police and yoga guru Ramdev for the midnight violent incident at the Ramlila Maidan, Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy on Thursday demanded resignation of Home Minister P Chidambaram, claiming that he has to take responsibility.

“I demand that Chidambaram be asked to resign immediately, taking responsibility for the reckless violence by the Delhi Police…,” Swamy said in a statement. He alleged the police would not have done this unless they were asked to do so and, hence, Chidambaram bears “full responsibility”.

10 lakh mosquito nets procured from Vietnam : Minister

Andhra Pradesh Minister for Health and Family Welfare K Murali today informed the State Assembly that ten lakh mosquito nets have been procured from Vietnam to supply it to the tribals areas of the state. He told Mr Vijaya Prasad and Dronamraju Srinivasa Rao (both Congress) and Lok Satta Party (LSP) President Dr Jaya Prakash Narayan during Question Hour that the consignment have been kept in warehousing at Visakha Port area and rent was being paid by the Central government.

Gold crosses Rs 29K mark after 10 weeks

New Delhi, February 24: Gold on Thursday regained the psychological level of Rs 29,000 after 10 weeks on frantic buying by stockists and jewellers for the ongoing marriage season amid a rising global trend.

While gold spurted by Rs 300 to Rs 29,040 per 10 grams, a level last seen on December 13, silver held steady at Rs 57,400 per kg in thin trade.

The trading sentiment in gold remained bullish as the metal jumped to a three-month high in global markets on speculation that the US will extend a stimulus to bolster the economy.

Narcotic cell inaugrated in city

To tackle the menace of drug peddling in a big way in the state capital, a specialised and separate Anti-Narcotics Cell was inaugurated by Hyderabad City Police Commissioner A K Khan here today.

The Cell, which was created to prevent and investigate drug peddling cases occurrences in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, consists of three wings — technical, surveillance and investigation, Mr Khan said on the occasion.

Woman delivers outside Guna hospital, pig tries to drag baby

A newborn baby was dragged by a pig soon after her mother delivered her outside the government hospital in Madhya Pradesh’s Guna district, the baby’s father said Thursday. The baby was rescued

Shakkaria Bai, the wife of Malkhan, a labourer, delivered a baby girl Wednesday outside the Kumbhraj government hospital but a pig tired to drag her away. Onlookers rushed forward and helped to save the baby.

The baby has been referred to a government hospital where her condition is stable.

Princess Victoria gives birth to baby girl

Sweden’s Crown Princess Victoria Thursday gave birth to a baby girl at a hospital here.

Princess Victoria gave birth to a daughter at 4.26 a.m. Thursday at Karolinska Hospital, the royal court said in a statement. Both mother and child are in good health.

Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt congratulated the crown princess and her husband Prince Daniel, reports Xinhua.

“It’s a great day for the entire royal family and it is also a great day for Sweden,” said Reinfeldt in a government statement.

15 die in Afghan Quran burning protests

At least 15 people have died in violence over the past three days in Afghanistan following reports of burning holy Quran by foreign soldiers.

Afghans in various provinces staged demonstrations that entered its third day Thursday. At least 15 people died and dozens of others were injured in clashes with police, Xinhua reported.

The protests erupted Tuesday in Bagram, the main US military base 50 km from Kabul, after media reports said copies of the Quran were found in the rubbish that NATO transported in a truck the previous night to a pit where waste is burned.
