US envoy’s secret cable warns about terror safe havens in Pak

In a “top-secret” cable to the Obama administration, America’s envoy to Kabul has warned that the existence of terror sanctuaries in Pakistan and insurgent activities of the “lethal” Haqqani network were a “deal-killer” for the US strategy in Afghanistan.

The cable written by Ambassador Ryan C Crocker last month “amounted to an admission that years of US efforts to curtail insurgent activity in Pakistan by the lethal Haqqani network, a key Taliban ally, were failing,” the Washington Post reported on Saturday.

Hadi takes oath

Saana, February 25: Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi took the constitutional oath to become Yemen’s new president on Saturday, formally removing Ali Abdullah Saleh from power after a year of protests that paralysed the impoverished Arabian Peninsular country.

Hadi, who stood as the sole candidate to replace Saleh in a US-backed power transfer deal brokered by Gulf neighbours, was voted in after more than 60% of eligible voters had taken part in the election this week.

Woman raped in desert by 5 men

Five men snatched an African woman from a public place and sped to a desert area, where they took turns in raping her before driving her back home.

The woman was walking back home in Riyadh when the five stopped their car near her and forced her inside.

“They took her to the desert and raped her…when they finished, they drove her back home and fled,” Alsaudi newspaper said, adding that police mounted a manhunt for the five after getting their descriptions from the woman.

Officials begin searching Italian ship for weapons

The Kerala Police along with a team of Indian and Italian experts have begun searching the Italian ship Enrica Lexie on Saturday for the weapons allegedly used by the two naval guards in the killing of two Indian fishermen on 15 February.

The high court earlier ordered the seizure of the vessel till Monday.

A Kollam court had earlier this week had permitted police to seize the arms allegedly used to fire at the fishermen. The court had also accepted Italy’s plea to have its representatives present during the ballistic examination.

14 blasts on railway tracks, 1 killed

Islamabad, February 25: At least one person was killed and train services were affected in Pakistan’s Sindh province as rail tracks in many places were blown up by unidentified militants early Saturday, media reports said. Over a dozen low intensity bombs ultimately forced authorities to suspend train services.

Tracks were blown up in Bin Qasim, Nawabshah, Pud Eidan, Khairpur and Ghotki, Geo News reported.

Dawn News said one person was killed in the explosions.

The first blast took place near Hussainabad town of Hyderabad around 7.15 am.

Woman dies after gangrape in WB

Barasat, February 25: Close on the heels of the gangrape of a woman at Park Street in Kolkata, a middle aged woman died after she was raped allegedly by a truck driver and his helper in the city’s adjoining Baranagar area under North 24-Parganas district, police said on Saturday.

Ragpicker Munia Das, mother of two sons and a daughter, was dragged into a truck from near her slum by the duo at about 3 am on Friday.

Mumbai Airport to shut for five hours today

Mumbai, February 25: Airport operations at both runways of the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai will remain closed for five hours on Saturday.

Operations will be closed between 11:30 am to 4:30 pm due to installation of rapid exit taxiway lights

Flights or passengers are not likely to be affected, as airlines had been informed about this closure three months in advance.

Similar closure will take place on two other Saturdays in March.

The heavy fees charged by private managements is another burden for parents. “I don’t know Aseemanand:Chauhan

Panchkula, February 25: Kamal Chauhan, a disgruntled RSS worker arrested by the NIA, in connection with the Samjhauta Express blast, on Friday claimed that he does not know another accused Aseemanand facing trial in the same case.

Chauhan, who was remanded to NIA custody after being produced in the court here, told reporters outside the court premises that “he knows nothing about Aseemanand.”

On February 14, Chauhan had admitted before media that he had planted bombs on board Samjhauta Express in 2007 that left 68 people, mostly Pakistanis, dead.

Second phase of Aadhar Cards from April 1

The second phase for issuing the Adhaar Cards will begin across the State from April 1.

This was announced by Civil Supplies Minister D Sreedhar Babu in the State Legislative Assembly on Friday. Replying to a question raised by MLAs Payyavula Keshav, Errabelli Dayakar Rao and others during Question Hour, the minister said that the second phase would last for six months.
