Bhanwari Case: Court Seeks Action Against Threats to CBI

The Rajasthan High Court Monday sought an explanation from the state government and directed it to take action on the CBI allegations that investigators and witnesses in the missing nurse Bhanwari Devi case were getting threats, a lawyer said.

“Taking the CBI’s apprehensions seriously, the court has asked the state government to take action and submit a report by March 3,” said the state government’s counsel Pradhyuman Singh.

Normal life largely unaffected in Kolkata

Normal life on Tuesday remained largely unaffected in Kolkata due to the general strike called to protest the “anti-labour” policies of the government, with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee warning State government employees that absence from duty will be treated as a break in service.

Taxi, tram, train, Metro rail and State-run bus services were normal though fewer private buses were plying.

Flight operations from the NSC Bose international airport were normal. All morning flights of Air India and other private airlines left Kolkata airport as schedule, sources said.

BJP leader demands repolling of Kondla village

Local BJP leader Vijay Sud has demanded repolling in village Kondla near Nasra, in Hoshiarpur state assembly constituency. He approached Election Commission, Punjab, with a plea that the votes of this village had wrongly been polled for Chabbewal Vidhan Sabha segment. Talking to this correspondent, Vijay Sud, who was polling agent of BJP candidate at Kondla, said that he had raised the issue before Returning Officer for Hoshiarpur Vidhan Sabha seat, but he did not take any action in this matter and later he complained to the Election Commission, Punjab.

Polling begins on a sedate note in Agra

Polling began in Agra Tuesday amid tight security arrangements as part of the sixth phase of UP assembly elections covering 68 seats spreading over 13 districts.

Early morning walkers turned up at some of the polling booths to press the button in the Taj city. “The morning chill and a light cloud cover seems to be deterring voters to come out in full force, but it is too early,” said Vimla, a home-maker showing the new status symbol, the indelible ink mark, a proof of having cast the vote.

UP polls phase 6: Polling underway

The Muslim card, played heavily by the Congress party, will be on test on Tuesday when 68 Uttar Pradesh assembly constituencies go to poll during the sixth and penultimate phase of the ongoing election.

Four of the 13 districts witnessing the poll have a substantial Muslim population ranging between 25-39 percent, while the remaining nine districts have 18-22 percent Muslims.

Together with the Muslim card, the much talked-about clout of Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Ajit Singh among the next dominant Jat community is also bound to face a litmus test.

After playing a negative character in ‘Dabangg’, actor Sonu Sood is gearing up to essay the role of Dawood Ibrahim in ‘Shootout at Wadala’.

In Sanjay Gupta’s next, Sonu essays the role of the underworld don. Earlier, Vivek Oberoi was signed for the role but he had a fallout with Sanjay.

“I am playing the role of Dawood Ibrahim and I am very much excited about this. We start shooting in March,” Sonu told PTI.

In the film, John Abraham plays the role of gangster Manya Surve, while Anil Kapoor plays ACP Isaque Bagwan.

KCR to campaign for Kovvur seat from March 6

Telangana Rashtra Samithi president K Chandrasekhar Rao will campaign in Kovvur assembly constituency on March 6 and 7.

Making the announcement at Telangana Bhavan here on Monday, Chandrasekhar Rao said that the party has formally decided to contest the by-elections from Kovvur seat of Nellore district. However, he said a local candidate would be fielded from the seat. A separate committee will also be constituted to supervise campaign for the seat, he said.

High Court serves notices to State, ACB on liquor syndicate probe

The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Monday served notices to the State Government and Anti-Corruption Bureau over the probe into liquor syndicate.

The notices were issued after the High Court admitted a Public Interest Litigation filed by freedom fighter Devara seeking directions to the government for an impartial probe into the liquor syndicate.

While serving notices, the court directed the government to submit the progress of ACB probe report on liquor syndicates to the court in a sealed cover within three weeks and adjourned the petition for next hearing for three weeks.

Gandra holds Naidu responsible for House adjournments

Government chief whip Gandra Venkata Ramana Reddy on Monday accused Telugu Desam party president N Chandrababu Naidu of being responsible for frequent adjournment of the House on liquor syndicate issue.

Talking to media persons at the Congress Legislature Party office, Gandra said that Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy clearly stated that it was not possible to place the ACB report on liquor syndicate as the investigations were yet to be completed. He said that the report would be tabled in the House after the completion of enquiry.

Naidu seeks Governor’s intervention on liquor scam

In protest against State Government’s refusal to table the report of Anti-Corruption Bureau on the liquor syndicate issue in the House, Telugu Desam president N Chandrababu Naidu on Monday called on Governor E S L Narasimhan at Raj Bhavan and urged him to direct the government to dismiss the ministers involved in the scam.

The Supreme Court on Monday posted the hearing on bail petition of suspended IAS officer Y Srilakshmi, an accused in the Obulapuram Mining Corporation illegal mining scam, to March 12.

Place ACB report on liquor scam in the House, demands TDP

Telugu Desam MLA P Raghunath Reddy on Monday criticized the government for not tabling the ACB report on liquor syndicate before the House for discussion.

Talking to media persons at Assembly media point, he came down heavily on the government for avoiding discussion on liquor scam. “Instead of taking up discussion and disclosing the names of those who involved in the scam, the government was resorting to frequent adjournment of House,” he alleged.

Emaar case: Sunil’s bail petition hearing adjourned to March 5

The CBI special court on Monday adjourned the hearing on bail petition of N Sunil Reddy, a close aide of Kadapa MP Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy and accused in Emaar Properties, to March 5.

Meanwhile, the CBI filed a counter petition in the court opposing bail for Sunil Reddy. In its counter petition, the CBI feared that Sunil Reddy might tamper with the evidence and influence the witnesses if granted bail. After hearing the CBI’s arguments, the court adjourned the next hearing to March 5.

Power cut: SSIs in AP threaten closure

Small Scale Industries(SSI)in the state today cautioned the government they will be constrained to declare mass lock out due to severe power cuts facing them. In a memorandum submitted to the Labour Commissioner here, SSI Association President ARK Reddy said all Small Scale Industries in the state were facing severe power cut being imposed by the government and there was no option but to close down their industries. All the SSIs, including spinning mills, will declare mass lockout if the government did not responded positively over lifting of power cuts to industries within 15 days.

Flesh trade thriving at Secunderabad railway station

The Secunderabad railway station has become a hub of flesh trade in the city. According to a survey conducted by the Government Railway Police (GRP), 300 persons survive on flesh trade in and around the busy railway station.

These details came to light when GRP superintendent M Kanta Rao asked his men to conduct a survey on commercial sex workers on the station premises.

Realising that flesh trade is thriving on the railway station, the SP decided to conduct a surprise check on Monday morning.

Govt prohibits strikes in Singareni Collieires

The Andhra Pradesh Government today announced to prohibit strikes in all the services under the Singareni Collieries Company Limited in the state. Strikes were prohibited in the collieries for a period of six months with effect from March 10 this year, according to an official release here.
