750,000 Brits to be long-term unemployed

London, February 02: An extra 750,000 British people are to join the ranks of the long-term unemployed over the next four years due to the ongoing economic crisis, reveals new forecasts.

According to the UK Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) figures, there will be a 32% increase from 2.4m to 3.3m in the number of jobless people expected to enter the Work Program, the British government’s long-term unemployment scheme.

Three policemen killed in Jharkhand

Latehar, February 02: Three policemen, including an assistant sub-inspector, were on Wednesday killed and two others injured when Maoists attacked their jeep near Chetag village in Latehar district of Jharkhand.

“Maoists first triggered a landmine blast and opened fire on the police jeep, killing three policemen and wounding two others,” Director General of Police G S Rath said.

One of them was an ASI of the district police, he said. The injured were referred to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences in Ranchi where the condition of one of the injured was serious, he said.

Salman to play double role again

13/7 accused underwent training in Pak: ATS

Mumbai, February 02: Haroon Naik, arrested in connection with the 13/7 serial blasts here, had undergone training with Indian Mujahideen founder Yasin Bhatkal in Pakistan and sent Rs 10 lakh to him last March to carry out the bombings that killed over 25 people.

Naik was today produced before a magistrate and was remanded in the custody of Maharashtra ATS till February 10 for his alleged involvement in the conspiracy of carrying out the blasts.

59 killed in Syria fighting

Beirut, February 02: At least 59 people, the majority of them civilians, were killed in fighting across Syria on Wednesday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The Britain-based monitoring group said at least eight civilians were killed in shelling by regime forces in the restive central city of Homs while 24 were killed in fighting in the Damascus region, among them a three-year-old child and a 25-year-old woman.

Five civilians also died in the southern province of Daraa and one was killed by sniper fire in Idlib, located in the northwest of the country.

Junior doctors’ hunger strike enters 7th day

Hyderabad, February 02: The indefinite fast of the representatives of junior doctors, who are agitating for hike in the stipend among other things, entered the seventh day on Tuesday.

The condition of two of them was serious, said Phani Kumar, a representative of the striking doctors. Four others have already been admitted to ICU.

No invitation had yet come from the government for talks, Phani said.

Criticising the government for its insensitive attitude he said the agitating doctors were now “going to the people”.

Modi won’t have to depose before riots probe panel

Ahmedabad, February 02: In a big relief to Chief Minister Narendra Modi, the Gujarat High Court ruled on Wednesday that he would not have to depose before Justice Nanavati-Mehta Commission probing the 2002 post-Godhra riots case.

The petition demanding that Narendra Modi, and three officials at CM’s office, be cross-examined by the Commission was filed by an NGO, Jan Sangharsh Manch, representing some of the riot victims.

The NGO contended that Modi should be summoned by the Commission as the role of the Chief Minister falls within the ambit of the probe panel’s inquiry.

SC to pronounce verdict against PC today

New Delhi, February 02: The Supreme Court will Thursday pronounce its judgements on the petitions seeking a direction for a probe into the alleged role of Home Minister P Chidambaram in the 2G spectrum scam and for cancellation of 122 radiowave licences granted during the tenure of A Raja as Telecom Minister.

The SC will also deliver its judgment on another plea for setting up a special investigation team (SIT) in view of the “slipshod” probe conducted by the CBI in the 2G case.

Kolkatta, February 02: A 14-year-old girl died while her boyfriend, 15, is battling for his life after the duo tried to commit suicide by jumping off the terrace of a four-storeyed apartment at Sajirhat near Ghola in North 24-Parganas on Wednesday evening. The girl died on the spot while the boy had to be admitted to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in a critical condition.

Telangana Meeting Only When Parties Give Their Views: Chidambaram

New Delhi, February 02: The Centre has said it will convene a meeting of political parties of Andhra Pradesh to discuss the Telangana issue only when it gets the views from all of them.

Home Minister P Chidambaram said four political parties in Andhra Pradesh—Congress, TDP, MIM and YSR Congress— are yet to make up their mind about their stand on Telangana.

“As I said four of the eight political parties have to tell me that they are ready to give their final views,” he told reporters here last evening.

Bangalore: Infant abandoned in a carton box

New Delhi, February 02: As baby Falak battles for life in Delhi, another infant was found abandoned in a carton box on Wednesday by garbage pickers in Bangalore. After being informed, the police immediately took the baby to a nearby hospital.

His condition is said to be stable, while police are on the search for witnesses who may have seen anyone leaving the baby at the car park area.
Reports suggest that the baby found is six-day-old.
In fact, on Wednesday another infant was found abandoned in a train in West Bengal.

Crucial verdict on PC’s role, fate of licenses in 2G today

New Delhi, February 02: It is a big day in the 2G spectrum scam on Thursday as three crucial verdicts are expected in the Supreme Court on the multi-crore scam. First and the most significant, the apex court is set to deliver its judgement on former finance minister and Home Minister P Chidambaram’s role in the scam.

Second, it will also decide on whether the 2G licences allotted to the tainted companies should be cancelled or not.

And lastly, the Supreme Court is also likely to pass an order on whether a Special Investigation Team (SIT) should oversee the CBI probe in the scam.

US uses graveyard arms in Afghanistan

Kabul, February 02: An Afghan activist reveals the US is still using horrific depleted uranium weapons in Afghanistan, creating graveyards of people who die of cancer and other unusual diseases, Media reports.

“These weapons are still used. In fact, a US aircraft called A-10 warthog, normally, even if it doesn’t use a uranium projectile in the machine gun, every third projectile is a uranium projectile and that’s the working horse of the US army in Afghanistan. They use it left and right,” Dr. Mohammad Daud Miraki said in an interview with Media.
