Saudi beheads Pak smuggler

Riyadh, February 02: Saudi Arabia beheaded a Pakistani man who was arrested as he tried to smuggle drugs into the ultra-conservative kingdom, the interior ministry said on Monday.

“Salman Khan Taj Mohammad, a Pakistani… was arrested as he was caught smuggling a large amount of heroin” into the country, the ministry said in a statement carried by state news agency SPA.

He was interrogated and convicted of drug smuggling, a crime punishable by death according to the kingdom’s laws.

Legal battle: Man adopts GF as daughter

Florida, February 02: In a weird turn of events, a wealthy Florida polo club founder has adopted his adult girlfriend as part of a legal battle stemming from a fatal 2010 car crash.

Court records show International Polo Club Palm Beach founder John Goodman legally adopted 42-year-old Heather Laruso Hutchins. Hutchins says the couple has been dating since 2009.

Clashes erupt in Libyan capital

Tripoli, February 02: Clashes between rival militia groups have erupted in the center of the Libyan capital city of Tripoli three months after the collapse of former dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

The sound of heavy and light weapons being shot could be heard coming from the district of al-Saadi beach on Wednesday.

This is while plumes of smoke rose from the area of the fighting, which had been continuing for at least 40 minutes.

Following Gaddafi’s ouster, the ruling National Transitional Council (NTC) has been struggling to impose its authority on Libya.

Salman dragged into SRK-Shirish fight

Mumbai, February 02: We all know, heard and read about the infamous fight between actor Shah Rukh Khan and editor-turned-director Shirish Kunder.

But poor Salman Khan who was neither in the vicinity of the fight nor had any knowledge of the fight is now being dragged into this controversy.

HC allows one month time to form Minority Commission

Hyderabad, February 2: State High Court has allowed one month time for formation of Minority Commission. State government had appealed to the chief justice Madan Lokur to allow 4 months time with regard to formation of Minority Commission.

Accepting the plea of state government the chief justice decided to allow time for Minority Commission formation.

Former member Minority Commission Maulana Tariq Quadri has filed a petition in the court with regard to speedy formation of state Minority Commission. On his request the high court had issued notice to the government

US punishes whistleblowers in military morgue scandal

Washington, February 02: The US Air Force officials have participated in “acts of retaliation” against the whistleblowers responsible for uncovering the practice of dumping soldiers’ remains in a landfill.

A US Office of Special Counsel investigation revealed that the four mortuary workers who reported the practice were suspended for doing so, and at least one of them, James Parsons, was fired, while another, William Zwicharowski, was labeled “mentally unstable” by officials.

Amnesty slams US drone attacks in Pakistan

Washington, February 02: Amnesty International has condemned the United States over its illegal assassination drone attacks in Pakistan.

In a statement on Tuesday, the group asked Washington to disclose details of the legal and factual basis for the use of drones in Pakistan.

Amnesty International also called for the US to monitor civilian casualties inflicted by drone attacks in Pakistan.

Americans to rally against war with Iran

Washington, February 02: A large number of US-based anti-war organizations have planned a nation-wide demonstration to demand Washington stop its warmongerings against Iran.

According to the StopWarOnIran website, “No war, no sanctions, no intervention, no assassinations against Iran” will be the demand of the coordinated demonstrations which will be held across the US on February 4, 2012.

The ad hoc group organizing the demonstrations has agreed “on the need to stop US imperialism and/or Israel from launching a military attack on Iran.”

Hyderabad police cancels seminar on Rushdie

Hyderabad, February 02: With Milad-un Nabi just round the corner, the Salman Rushdie controversy couldn’t have found its way into the city at a more sensitive time. A seminar on the controversial author which was scheduled to be held at Urdu Hall here on Wednesday was cancelled by the police under pressure from right-wing Muslim politicians.

Ironically, the objective of the seminar was to discuss the fundamental rights to practice religion, to protest and to discourage the demonization of Muslims.

Wash 5 dead bodies, womaniser order

Jeddah, February 02: If you are scared of the dead, then you should avoid harassing women in Saudi Arabia.

A judge in the Gulf Kingdom went out of his way and sentenced a teen age boy to washing five dead bodies after he was caught harassing women.

Members of the Commission for the promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, the most feared religious police in the country, seized the boy at a crowded shopping mall in the western town of Medina.

Foundation stone for Islamic Research Centre on 19th Feb

Hyderabad, February 02: (Siasat News) Maulana Syed Ashraf (Kachocha Sharef) will lay the foundation stone for the Islamic Research Centre in Kattalmandi on 19th February 2012. Maulana Mahboob Alam Ashrafi and others told the newsmen yesterday that Wakf Board allotted nearly 300 Sq. Yards of land for the research centre. A four storeyed building will be constructed on this land. Ceiling on VAT for textiles increased

Hyderabad, February 02: Yeilding to the pressure of the agitating cloth merchants for abolition of VAT on textiles, Govt. agreed to enhance the celing in view of the agitation. The Govt. agreed to enhance the ceiling from Rs. 5 lakh to Rs. 7.5 lakh for exemption from VAT on textiles.

Authentic sources revealed that the C.M. was apprised of the losses incurred by the cloth merchants.

US scientists turn brain waves into actual words

Washington, February 02: A new study conducted in the University of California has enabled scientists to find a way to decipher actual words from human brain waves.

A team of neuroscientists worked with a group of epilepsy patients who were under the treatment for difficult curable seizures.

They implanted the required electrodes deep in patients’ brains to locate the source of seizures and help doctors remove the malfunctioning tissue.
