Gay sex: Centre pulled up for contradictory stands

The Centre on Tuesday favoured decriminalisation of gay sex in Supreme Court, contradicting its earlier stand and drawing the court’s ire, prompting it to remark that the government must not make a “mockery” of the system.

As the proceedings began in the controversial case, Additional Solicitor-General Mohan Jain told the bench that as per the government decision there is no legal error in the Delhi High Court verdict which had decriminalised gay sex in 2009.

Warning over sleeping pills ‘risk’

Sleeping pills commonly prescribed in the UK may increase the risk of death more than four-fold, according to new research.

The higher the dose, the greater the risk of dying, while people on higher doses also had an increased risk of cancer, experts found.

A wide range of drugs was analysed for the study of more than 10,500 people taking sleeping pills. They included drugs used in the UK, such as benzodiazepines (including temazepam and diazepam), non-benzodiazepines (including zolpidem, zopiclone and zaleplon), barbiturates and sedative antihistamines.

Israeli warplanes again intrude into Gaza’s airspace

This is the third time the Israeli jets have intruded into Gaza’s airspace over the past week.

On Sunday, Israeli warplanes fired two missiles at a site on the outskirts of southern Gaza town of Rafah, causing serious damage to a cement factory.

Earlier on Friday, Israeli warplanes launched an airstrike against northern part of the impoverished territory, injuring two Palestinian residents.

More than 1,400 Palestinians were killed during Israel’s December 2008-January 2009 war on the people of Gaza.

Russia ‘thwarts plot’ to kill Putin

A plot to kill Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has been thwarted less than a week before the Russian presidential election on Sunday, officials said yesterday. Two suspects linked to a Chechen rebel leader were nabbed after an accidental explosion, state TV reported. State television in Russia said that special forces had seized two conspirators in Odessa, southern Ukraine, after an explosion in an apartment in January.

Seven die in Afghanistan blast

Seven civilians, including three children, were killed in a blast in the southern Afghan province of Helmand, authorities said Tuesday.

“Seven civilians were killed when a powerful blast occurred at around 4 p.m. Monday in a compound in Naw Zad district of Helmand province,” spokesperson for provincial government Daud Ahmadi told Xinhua.

He said four women and three children were killed in the explosion that happened in a house in Sarkhdaz area of the district.

Ahmadi said it was not clear how the explosion happened.

Recipe: Badam Phirni

4 cups Milk
2 tbsp Rice
3 tbsp Sugar
1/4th Cup Blanched Almonds (sliced)
1 tsp Green Cardamom (crushed)
1/2 tsp Kewra Essence
Silver or Gold Foil Paper

Procedure:

Soak rice in water for a few hours, then drain the water and grind rice into a smooth paste.

In a non-stick saucepan, boil milk. After it comes to a boil, reduce the heat to simmer.

Over a moderately low heat, add rice, sugar and cardamom to the milk and stir constantly, till it turns thick.

Delhi records five rapes in three days

In west Delhi’s Kirti Nagar area, a 6-year-old girl was abducted and raped by a neighbour Friday. The girl was found next morning at a nearby temple. She was taken to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital where the doctors confirmed rape. Her alleged attacker is missing and on the run.

In another incident in west Delhi, another 6-year-old was abducted and raped Saturday in Mundka area. The rapist, allegedly a security guard of a residential building, also is missing.

Man jailed for stabbing friend who had sex with his wife

A 62-year-old Briton has been jailed for six years for stabbing a man who taunted him for years about having sex with his wife 30 years ago.

Retired hotelier Kenneth Jenkins could not stand any more when Anthony Friendship pinched his 60-year-old wife’s bottom, the Daily Mail reported. Friendship allegedly pinched the woman’s bottom at a pub in Woodcroft in March last year.

Jenkins followed Friendship into the washroom and stabbed him with a knife in the back and then in his abdomen, rupturing his spleen.

Gunmen kill 18 bus passengers in Pakistan

Police say gunmen have killed 18 passengers travelling on a bus in northwestern Pakistan.

The incident occurred on Tuesday in the remote mountainous village of Harban Nala in Kohistan district.

Police officer Mohammad Azhar says the bus was travelling to Gilgit when the gunmen attacked it and shot the passengers.

It was unclear what the motive for the attack was, but in the past Sunni extremists have killed Shias in that part of Pakistan.

Kohistan is some 350 km northwest of the capital, Islamabad.
