UN urges Sudan, South Sudan to resolve issues

Ethiopia, January 30: The United Nations has urged Sudan and its new neighbour South Sudan to resolve all outstanding issues threatening peace and security between them, Xinhua reported.

“Both Sudan and South Sudan worked to end one of Africa’s longest-running civil wars. I now urge both to show the same statesmanship and resolve outstanding issues,” said UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon during the opening ceremony of the 18th African Union summit held here in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa Sunday.

Car packed with arms seized in Pakistan

Islamabad, January 30: Police in Pakistan’s Peshawar city foiled a terrorism bid after it seized huge quantity of arms and ammunition from a car during a raid Sunday, the Geo News reported.

A suspected car coming from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province’s Dara Adam Khel town towards Kohat town, near Peshawar city, was intercepted and huge quantity of arms and ammunitions including guns, revolvers and rounds was recovered, said a senior police officer.

One person was arrested regarding the case, said police.

A 70-year-old Briton held for molesting Cambodian boys

London, January 30: A 70-year-old retired British teacher has been charged with molesting at least five minor boys in Cambodia, a media report said.

Reginald Blakeley, who allegedly molested the children as young as seven, was held after investigators secretly filmed him approaching youngsters outside schools, The Sun reported.

Eleven boys in Siem Reap city complained to police about the man’s behaviour while five said he committed indecent acts on them.

Hyderabad, January 30 (Siasat News): In a heart-wrenching incident, a son killed his father in Bolaram police station limits.

According to police sources, Krishna, 60, was living with his son Ramchander, as the details of his other family members are not available.

Ramchander used to harass his father over money and used to ask financial favours every now and then.

Bomb squad called to embassies in Australia

Sydney, January 30: Bomb squad officers were called to the French and Israeli embassies in Australia on Monday following the discovery of suspicious packages that were later found to be harmless.

Police said a bomb response team dispatched to the diplomatic posts in Canberra determined that the items were not suspicious and road closures around the embassies were lifted, a police spokeswoman said.

It was not clear if the incidents were linked.

The French embassy said the drama was sparked by a courier parcel delivered this morning.

Grape seed extract kills cancer cells

Washington, January 30: Cancer cells, which kill nearly 12,000 people in the US alone every year and affect more than half a million worldwide, could be eradicated with grape seed extract, reveals a study.

The extract creates conditions unfavourable for the cancers’ growth by damaging both their cells’ DNA and stops the pathways that allow repair.

“It’s a rather dramatic effect,” said Rajesh Agarwal, study investigator at the University of Colorado Cancer Centre and professor at the Skaggs School of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Syrian troops retake Damascus suburbs from rebels

Damascus, January 30: Syrian troops seized eastern suburbs of Damascus from rebels late on Sunday, opposition activists said, after two days of fighting only a few kilometres from the centre of power of President Bashar al-Assad.

“The Free Syrian Army has made a tactical withdrawal. Regime forces have re-occupied the suburbs and started making house-to-house arrests,” an activist named Kamal said by phone from the eastern al-Ghouta area on the edge of the capital.

A spokesman for the Free Syrian Army of defectors fighting Assad’s forces appeared to confirm that account.

Difference in blood pressure between both arms ‘reveal real health risk’

A difference in blood pressure between the right and left arm could indicate an increased risk of dying from heart disease, say doctors.

They discovered that a difference in systolic blood pressure of 15mm of mercury or more between the arms is linked to hardening of the arteries supplying blood to the legs and feet.

Their findings come after they reviewed 28 papers looking at variations in systolic blood pressure between the arms.

A high blood pressure reading is one that exceeds 140/90mm of mercury. The first figure is called the systolic pressure.

‘Use of child labour in households growing’

Kolkata, January 30: Pointing to a rise in child labour in domestic units, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) is seeking to bring households under the ambit of labour laws. India is estimated to have at least 13 million child labourers.

“There is growth in child labour, especially in the informal sector, the household units. The child labour law doesn’t cover this sector. We want the household sector to be brought under its ambit,” NCPCR chief Shanta Sinha said.

Bengal’s districts witness 19 infant deaths over 48 hours

Kolkata, January 30: Horrific crib deaths continued to haunt West Bengal with 19 infant deaths in Malda district and the state-run Behrampore Sadar Hospital in Murshidabad district over the past 48 hours.

The deaths exposed the state of healthcare in Bengal’s districts where the health machinery has almost come to a standstill.

Sources said most of the patients were suffering from acute respiratory problems and malnutrition.

Twitter is platform for lies: Saudi Mufti

Riyadh, January 30: Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti (religious chief) has launched a virulent attack on the social networking site Twitter, saying it has become a platform for promoting lies, newspapers in the Gulf Kingdom reported on Sunday.

Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al Shaikh, in a Friday prayers sermon, was referring to what he described as countless Fatwas (Islamic edicts) by Muslim scholars from Saudi Arabia and other countries.

He said those scholars are promoting false allegations, issuing erroneous fatwas and attacking venerated religious and social personalities.

Earphones on, boy hit by train

Ghaziabad, January 30: Sixteen-year-old Delhi school student Kaushlendra Pal never heard the train coming. He was using his earphones to listen to music from his mobile while crossing a railway track in Ghaziabad when a speeding train hit him from behind on Saturday afternoon.

The driver of the Garib
Rath Express blew the train horn, people standing close to the track shouted, but all in vain.

When the train dragged him for several feet before stopping, his earphones were still on.

8-year old says he was molested at home in Mirdiff

Abu Dhabi, January 30: A 44-year-old Indian supervisor AAB is accused of molesting an eight-year old Briton student in his house, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

The victim HWA, testified that the accused ‘misbehaved’ with him while the worker was in his room.

The victim’s 45-year old father, AD, testified that on September 26, 2011, at around 6pm he received furniture he had bought for his house in Mirdiff area.
