Musqat, January 30: Mohan Kumar, and young Indian manager at the Al Sarooj petrol station in Mudaibi, 200km away from Muscat, Oman, should have been in Kochi, Kerala, getting married today morning at 9.30 am Indian time.

Instead due to a mix-up at his work place as regards his leave application, he is still at work, filling petrol.

Only, Mohan Kumar was so sure he was getting leave that he went ahead and set up all the arrangements for the wedding in India this morning, expecting to make it there just in time.

Pak Supreme Court lifts Haqqani travel ban

Islamabad, Janary 30: Pakistan’s Supreme Court on Monday lifted a travel ban on the country’s former ambassador to the U.S. Husain Haqqani, as it gave the judicial commission two more months to complete its probe in the memo scandal that rocked ties between the civilian government and the military.

The top court also said that the panel would decide on controversial Pakistani-American businessman Mansoor Ijaz’s request to record his statement outside the country.

ICAI report on black money abroad to be out soon

Tiruchirapalli, January 30:The committee constituted by Indian Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) to suggest ways to check and bring back black money stashed away in tax havens abroad, would submit its report to the Ministry of Finance soon, according to CA G Ramaswamy, President of the ICAI.

According to him, the committee would submit the report in 10 to 15 days time.

Magnitude 6.3 earthquake shakes Peru

Lima, Janary 30:The U.S. Geological Survey says an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.3 has struck on the coast of central Peru.

The quake was recorded at 11 minutes after midnight (local and EST; 0511 GMT), 15 km from the city of Ica, which was badly damaged by a major 8.0 earthquake in August 2007 and also suffered damage in a quake last October.

Monday’s quake was at a depth of 39.2 km. USGS maps showed the epicentre exactly on the Pacific Ocean coastline.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. No tsunami warning was issued.

CBI arrests AP home secretary

New Delhi, January 30: CBI today arrested senior IAS officer and Andhra Pradesh Principal Home Secretary B P Acharya in a case relating to alleged irregularities in land transfer and sale of villas and apartments in a township in the state.

The township has been jointly developed by state-run Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) and Dubai-based infrastructure firm Emaar.

International sex racket busted

Mumbai,January 30:An International sex racket has been busted in the Metropolis with the arrest of four pimps in Vile Parle, police said.

Three women, including two from Uzbekistan, were rescued by a special squad of police during the week-end from a hotel, Police said two of the women had come on business visa on the pretext of doing side roles in films.

Following a tip-off, a decoy was sent to the pimps in the guise of a customer and all the four pimps were arrested.

Further investigations were underway, police said.

Pak PM dismisses reports of extension to ISI chief

Islamabad, January 30: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has dismissed reports that he was considering a proposal to grant another extension to ISI chief Lt Gen Ahmed Shuja Pasha and said a decision on this issue would be made at the “appropriate time”.

Gilani rubbished reports in a section of the media about his government giving another extension to Pasha, whose current term ends in March, in an attempt to heal a rift with the security establishment.

45% turnout in Punjab till 2 p.m.; polling picks up in Uttarakhand

Dehradun, January 30: Around 45 per cent of the 1.76 crore electorate on Monday exercised their franchise till 2 p.m. in Punjab to elect the 117-member State Assembly.

“The polling percentage is up to 45 per cent till 1400 hours,” Punjab’s Joint Chief electoral Officer Gurkirat Kirpal Singh said in Chandigarh.

Even as reports of minor clashes were received from Bathinda and Ludhiana, the electoral office maintained that the polling was peaceful as no untoward incident had occurred in the State.

Swamy granted anticipatory bail

New Delhi, Janary 30: Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy, accused of writing an “inflammatory” article in a Mumbai daily, was on Monday granted anticipatory bail by the Delhi High Court.

“In the event of arrest, he shall be released on furnishing of a personal bond and a surety of Rs. 25,000 each,” Justice M.L. Mehta said while taking on record Mr. Swamy’s undertaking that he would refrain from writing such articles in future.

Srinagar, January 30:In a major embarrassment for senior Congress leader and Education Minister Peerzada Sayeed, a local newspaper Monday carried the facsimile of an answer sheet in two handwritings — alleging that part of it had been written by an education official to help his son pass the secondary school exam in 2009.

A front page story in the widely circulated ‘Greater Kashmir’ newspaper carried the facsimile of the answer sheet with the roll number 228211.

Baby Falak critical, may undergo another brain surgery

New Delhi, January 30:Two-year-old abandoned and battered baby Falak continues to be critical, a doctor said Monday, adding that she has developed respiratory problems and may have to undergo another brain surgery.

“Her condition is critical. She developed respiratory problems, so we put her back on the ventilator around 10.30 yesterday (Sunday) night ,” Deepak Agrwal, assistant professor (neurosurgery) at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Trauma Centre, told IANS.

Falak was taken off the ventilator Friday.

Man beats wife’s boss

Kuwait, January 30: An Arab national in Kuwait roughed up a person, who is his wife’s manager at the workplace, because he believed the duo were having an affair.

According to ‘Al-Rai’ daily, the husband admitted to police that he thrashed the victim because he could not control himself on seeing the victim leave their flat one day. However, the manager said that he had visited the woman at her home to hand over her indemnity as her contract had expired.

The victim suffered broken teeth in the assault.

Cigarette prices set to soar after new tax

Dubai, January 30: Smokers should brace themselves for a fresh rise in the price of cigarettes when a new tax approved by the UAE and other Gulf oil producers is enforced at the end of 2012, an official was reported on Monday as saying.

Health ministers from the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) endorsed the “health tax” at talks in Saudi Arabia in early January as part of joint plans to curb the consumption of tobacco in the region, said Dr Widad Al Maidoor, head of the anti-smoking section at the UAE Ministry of Health.

Afghan president to hold talks with Taliban

Moscow, January 30: Afghan President Hamid Karzai has plans to hold a meet with the Taliban in Saudi Arabia to restart peace talks, a media report said.

The militant group has agreed to the meeting, which is due within the next few weeks, as it is looking to establish a permanent office in Qatar, BBC reported.

“Even if the Taliban office is established in Qatar, we will obviously pursue other efforts in the region, including Saudi Arabia and Turkey,” the report quoted a senior Kabul government official as saying.
