Four men get 10 years for raping pregnant woman

Riyadh, January 24: A Saudi court sentenced four men to 10 years in jail each after they were convicted of breaking into a house and raping a pregnant woman.

The four who were drunk had sneaked into the house in Riyadh just after the husband left for work early morning.

They locked up the woman’s children in their room and took turns in raping her despite her pregnancy.

“One of them told police that he does not remember any thing and that he was arrested while asleep at his house,” Sabq daily said.

West Bengal: 4 more babies die in Malda Hospital

Kolkata, January 24: Four more babies have died in Malda Sadar Hospital here taking the crib death toll in the hospital to 22 in the last few days.

West Bengal Governor MK Narayanan on Monday told mediapersons that the state government was deeply concerned about the deaths and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was personally looking into the issue.

Last week the hospital sources said a decision has been taken to increase the number of beds in the sick new born care unit to 22 from 15 at present.

Sorcery in Saudi, Man gets 15 years, 1500 lashes

Riyadh, January 24: A Saudi court sentenced an African man to 15 years in jail and 1,500 lashes with the whip for embezzling money from many people through sorcery.

Members of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice arrested the unidentified man, in his 50s, following complaints by many of his victims in various cities in the Gulf Kingdom.

“They seized him red handed after setting a trap for him in Riyadh…they found talismans, herbs, hair and other items used in his fraudulent activities,” Ajel Arabic language daily said.

Dad locks daughter in bathroom for 10 years

Gaza, January 24: Palestinian police have freed a young woman whose father kept her locked in the bathroom of their house for about a decade.

Spokesman Adnan Damiri said the 20-year-old woman was in a “deplorable” condition when she was found on Saturday. Damiri said on Monday it remains unclear why she was locked up.

Baraa Melhem, 20, revealed that she spent the decade by listening to the radio that her father had given her and by eating an apple that she got to eat every day.

RBI Credit Policy: Repo rate unchanged, CRR cut by 0.5 per cent

New Delhi, January 24: After nearly two years of tight check on money supply to tame inflation, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) took steps on Wednesday to infuse more liquidity in the system by lowering the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) by half-a-percentage point. But the short-term lending rate was kept unchanged in view of persisting inflationary concerns.

The cash reserve ratio (CRR), the amount against deposits which commercial banks have to keep as liquid assets such as cash, has been lowered by 50 basis points to 5.5 per cent from 6 per cent.

French senate passes ‘Armenian genocide’ bill

Ankara, January 24: France’s upper house of parliament has approved a bill that will make it illegal to deny that the mass killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks nearly a century ago amounted to genocide.

The French upper house voted 127-to-86 in support of the bill after debating it into the night on Monday, nearly a month after the French national assembly voted overwhelmingly in favour of the draft law. The bill was approved by the lower house in December.

Israel, US hail new EU sanctions on Iran

Jerusalem, January 24: Israel and the United Stated have praised the European Union’s decision to ban oil imports from the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the new sanction is a step in the right direction, but said that such moves are not enough.

Washington said the EU’s move keeps more money out of Iran’s nuclear energy program.

“It is necessary to pressure Iran very hard and very quickly,” Netanyahu stated.

Minority institutions to be kept out of RTE: Digvijay

Lucknow,January 24: Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Monday sought to dispel apprehension of members of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board on issues related to inclusion of their educational institutions under the Right To Education, saying minority institutions would be kept out of RTE purview.

“The government has in principle agreed to keep minority institutions out of the purview of RTE while discussions were on regarding other issue related to the Direct Taxes Code Bill though no decision has been taken,” he told reporters here.
