Melbourne, January 26: Fourth seed Maria Sharapova overcame a second set rally by Petra Kvitova to advance to her third Australian Open final with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 victory on Thursday.

Kvitova had appeared tentative in the first set, allowing the Russian to dictate play before she found her range with her serve in the second, conceding just five points to send the match into a decider.

`Infants understand gravity with innate sense of physics`

Washington, January 26: It`s said that every child is a born scientist. Now, a new study has found that infants as young as two months old have the basic knowledge of “intuitive physics”.

“We believe that infants are born with expectations about the objects around them, even though that knowledge is a skill that`s never been taught,” said study author Kristy vanMarle of psychology at the University of Missouri.

“As the child develops, this knowledge is refined and eventually leads to the abilities we use as adults,” vanMarle was quoted as saying by LiveScience.

Controversial scan doesn`t help smokers quit: Study

New York, January 26: Checking for clogged arteries doesn`t help inveterate smokers kick the habit if they are already in a quit-smoking program, Swiss researchers have found.

Yet that`s sometimes the justification when doctors recommend the expensive scan, called carotid plaque screening, which experts say has no proven benefits in people without symptoms of heart disease.

“When people get a very good smoking cessation program, carotid plaque screening does not add anything,” Dr. Nicolas Rodondi, who led the new study, told Reuters Health.

Militants explode bomb in Imphal

Imphal, January 26: Suspected militants exploded a powerful bomb in the capital complex here on the Republic Day today, but no casualty was reported.

The bomb went off at about 9 a.m. near Shamashakhi School area, police said.

The militants also exploded two powerful bombs in Kakwa area in Imphal West district last night, but none was injured.

Saudi bows to Philippines’ demands over maids

Riyadh, January 26: Saudi Arabia has agreed to lift a one-year ban on hiring domestic servants from the Philippines after bowing to Manila’s demands to protect the rights of its workers in the largest Arab economy.

After several months of negotiations, the two countries signed an accord setting the monthly salary of a Filipina maid in Saudi Arabia at a minimum SR1,500 ($400) and stipulating that the employer must give her a weekly day off and an annual holiday of at least 30 days.

Intruder killed on India-Pakistan border

Srinagar, January 26: The Border Security Force (BSF) shot dead an intruder from Pakistan who entered Indian territory in Akhnoor sector of Jammu and Kashmir Thursday morning, a BSF official said.

The intruder was seen crossing the zero line into Indian territory near Mala Bala border post in Akhnoor sector, about 45 km west of Jammu.

“He was challenged, but he did not stop. BSF soldiers then shot him dead,” said the official.

Resolve Tibet issue through dialogue, says PM-in-exile

Dharamsala, January 26 :Tibetan Prime Minister-in-exile Lobsang Sangay Thursday reiterated that the only way to resolve the Tibet issue is through dialogue.

‘I urge the Chinese leadership to heed the cries of the Tibetan protesters… You will never address the genuine grievances of Tibetans and restore stability in Tibet through violence and killing,’ Sangay said in a statement here.

Hyundai Motor reports record $7.2 billion profit for 2011

Seoul, January 26: Hyundai Motor Co. says its 2011 earnings reached a record high on increased demand at home and abroad.

The company said Thursday that its net profit reached 8.1 trillion won ($7.2 billion) last year. The company had earned 6 trillion won a year earlier.

Company officials said in a telephone conference that sales increased in countries such as the United States and China as well as at home.

Hyundai Motor is South Korea’s largest automaker and is a major force in the global auto industry.

PA-Israel talks end without result: Abbas

Gaza, January 26: Acting Palestinian Authority (PA) chief Mahmoud Abbas has said that the talks between Palestinian Authority officials and Israelis have ended inconclusively in Jordan.

After a meeting with Jordan’s King Abdullah II in the capital Amman on Wednesday, Abbas said in a press conference that the Palestinian Authority would decide on the next steps of talks with Israelis during a meeting with the Arab League foreign ministers on February 4.

100 die from fake drug use in Pakistan

Islamabad, January 26: At least 100 patients at a heart institute in Pakistan’s Punjab province have died from reactions to spurious drugs, chief minister Shahbaz Sharif has said.

Sharif said his team was investigating the drug scandal in Lahore’s Punjab Institute of Cardiology, Dawn News reported.

The government has sent samples of the medicines to France and Britain for analysis. The provincial health department has confirmed only 72 deaths.

Sharif said action would be taken against those found guilty.

10 killed by bomb in Iraq

Baghdad, January 26: A bomb attack on Thursday morning in central Iraq at the home of two brothers, both policemen, killed all 10 of their family members, including women and children, police and medics said.

The 4:00 am (0100 GMT) attack in Mussayib, 60 kilometres (35 miles) south of Baghdad, struck the home of policemen Ahmed and Jihad Zuwaiyin as they and their families were sleeping, a police official in the Babil provincial capital Hilla and a medic at Mussayib hospital said.
