Cong rivalries responsible for Amalapuram incident: CPI

Hyderabad, January 27 (INN): Communist Party of India state secretary K Narayana on Thursday held the rivalries within the Congress party responsible for the desecration of Dr B R Ambedkar’s statues in Amalapuram in East Godavari district.

Talking to media persons after hoisting the national flag at party office in Makhdhoom Bhavan to mark 63rd Republic Day celebrations, Narayana slammed the state government for not initiating action against those responsible for the incident. He alleged that the government did not take the incident seriously.

Rocket attack near Osama’s compound

Abbottabad, January 27: Police said unknown assailants fired rocket-propelled grenades at the military academy near Osama bin Laden’s compound in the northwest Pakistani city of Abbottabad.

Senior local police officer Abdul Karim said the attack early Friday morning damaged the wall of the academy but did not cause any casualties.

U.S. Navy Seals killed bin Laden during a daring night raid on his compound in Abbottabad last May. The operation outraged the Pakistanis because they were not told about it beforehand.

SC to hear Krishna’s plea today

New Delhi, January 27: The Supreme Court will on Friday hear a petition by External Affairs Minister SM Krishna challenging the registration of an FIR by the Karnataka Lokayukta (ombudsman) police on allegations that he had illegally de-reserved forest blocks for mining when he was chief minister 1999-2004.

A bench of Justice Altamas Kabir, Justice Surinder Singh Nijjar and Justice Gyan Sudha Misra will hear the matter when it would be mentioned before the bench later in the day.

London, January 27: The British Museum in London opened its doors Thursday to the first major exhibition in the world on Haj.
Using priceless artifacts, video footage, personal audio recordings and photographs, the show explores the history, journeys and experiences of pilgrims who travel from around the world to reach the holy city of Makkah.
“For me personally it’s been a huge learning curve over the past two years,” said Qaisra Khan, co-curator of the exhibition.

We don’t need to sell oil to Europe: Ahmadinejad

Tehran, January 27: Iran does not need to sell its oil to European nations, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said in response to oil embargo imposed by the European Union.

The EU Monday imposed further sanctions against Iran’s oil exports and the central bank to ramp up pressure over its nuclear program. The oil ban will take effect from July 1.

Sanctions cannot stop Iran’s progress, Ahmadinejad said at a gathering in the southeastern Kerman city Thursday, adding “We do not need to sell oil to Europe.”

Dredging of Hussainsagar delayed

Hyderabad, January 27: With none of its projects meeting the deadline, Hussainsagar and Catchment Area Improvement Programme is going at a snail’s pace.

In 2005-06, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) started the Rs 310 crore programme to improve the 16th century lake’s water quality and sanitary conditions of the people living in its vicinity.

Construction of sewerage treatment plants, a major component of the programme, scheduled to be completed by January 2011, with an outlay of `100 crore, is so far only 50 percent finished.

2 YO Falak with human bite marks’ on body in Critical State

New Delhi, January 27: Bitten and battered with severe head injuries, a two-year-old baby who was admitted to a hospital here last week is “showing signs of recovery”, doctors said on Thursday.

Falak was brought to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences’ (AIIMS) Trauma Centre around 2.15 pm Jan 18 in an unconsciousness state with injury marks all over her body by a 15-year-old girl who claimed to be her mother.

The girl has been sent to a juvenile home, police said.

Hyderabad, January 27: They engineered what they claim to be the longest national flag ever in the world.

At 3.1 km length, the tricolour students of Dr Paul Raj Engineering College displayed on the Republic Day at Bhadrachalam town in Khammam district could well justify their claim to the fame.

As the students carried the massive flag – three metres wide and weighing a whopping 750 kg – from the Bridge Centre to the college premises, they set off a wave of patriotic fervour in the town.

Bill Gates Praises India For Polio Eradication

New Delhi, January 27: Bill Gates, co-chair of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, has praised India for managing to eradicate polio despite all odds. “In 2012, we need to keep India and all the other places that are polio-free from getting re-infected,” he said.

Only three years ago, India had more polio cases than any nation, he noted.

This is a milestone for global polio eradication and for children’s health worldwide, Mr. Gates said in his fourth annual letter released worldwide on Wednesday.

A one-room university in Daryaganj

New delhi, January 27: Believe it or not, a ‘university’ is being run from a cramped 20×20-foot room on the second floor of a building at Daryaganj in Old Delhi. The owner of the establishment claims it offers BCom courses to students across the country.

Commercial University Ltd, as the place is called, is one of six ‘universities’ in the capital that have been branded fake by the University Grants Commission. The list was released in December 2011 and asked students to avoid these self-styled universities.

Afghan stabs two US troops to death

Kabul, January 27: An Afghan man, outraged over a recent video showing American Marines urinating on the bodies of Taliban militants, has killed two US troops in southwest Afghanistan.

The man attacked the US soldiers with a knife as they were walking in a bazaar in Sangin, a town in Helmand province, the Taliban said in a statement on Thursday.

Attacks by Afghan nationals on foreign troops occupying their country have been on the rise recently.

Pentagon announces spending cuts

Washington, January 27: The Pentagon has announced plans to cut military spending by 487 billion dollars over the next decade as part of efforts to shore up US ailing economy.

Speaking at a news conference at the Pentagon on Thursday, US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said the budget cuts would see the number of US Army troops drop from 565,000 to 490,000 within five years, a decrease of almost 13 percent.

The Marine Corps would also be cut by more than 10 percent, from 202,000 to 182,000.
