20 lakh BPL families to get power connection

Hyderabad, January 02: The state government has requested the Union power ministry to sanction free domestic connections to around 20 lakh eligible BPL families apart from electrification of the remaining tribal habitations, SC and weaker section colonies under the Rajiv Gandhi Grameena Vidyuthikarana Yojana (RGGVY) during the 12th Plan period.

Bypolls not a vote on Telangana: Kiran Reddy‎

Hyderabad, January 02: In his first speech of the new year, chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Sunday seemed to take an anticipatory bail regarding bypolls while skirting the issue of cabinet expansion and Jagan Mohan Reddy.
Speaking to mediapersons here, Kiran Kumar said he would not consider the outcome of the ensuing byelections as a referendum on the policies of his government. In the same breath he added that results of bypolls in Telangana region are also not to be understood as a vote on the separate state issue.

Woman killed in revenge

Hyderabad, January 2 (Siasat News): A 40-year-old woman was stabbed to death by a person bearing a grudge against her family, at Amberpet’s Raghunathnagar on Sunday morning.

Amberpet police said that Padma died after she was attacked by Santosh, resident of the same locality, at her residence.

According to police, Santosh’s sister Shashirekha had committed suicide several months back after one of Padma’s family members, allegedly let her down in love.

Impact of Siasat news: defunct Jummerat Bazaar outpost functional

Hyderabad, January 2: Siasat daily has been publishing write-ups for the past three months regarding several non-operational police stations in the city. In October it had published write-up regarding Jummerat Bazaar outpost along with the photographs.

The campaign bore fruits and the police department came into action. Thus many police stations were rehabilitated.

The police stations which were in completely precarious condition have been demolished and reconstructed. The others have been whitewashed and renovated.

AI flight fails to take off, passengers create ruckus

Mumbai, January 02: There was high drama at Mumbai airport on Sunday evening as an Air India flight to Dubai got delayed by five hours. The passengers complained that they were not informed about the reasons for delay.

AI flight 957 was supposed to take off at 8 pm.

Not having been informed about the cause for delay, the agitated passengers created a ruckus inside the plane.

BJP to meet to decide on candidates for 5 states

New Delhi, January 02: The BJP’S Central Election Committee meeting is scheduled to meet on Monday to decide on candidates for the five states going to the polls. The final list is likely to be released on Tuesday.

The process of filing nominations begins on January 5.

The Election Commission will launch a campaign to register voters in Uttar Pradesh.

Meanwhile, two Congress leaders in Uttarakhand including Haldwani municipality Chairperson Renu Adhikari along with their supporters on Sunday joined the BJP ahead of Assembly elections in the state to be held on January 30.

Dubai witchcraft, sorcery cases trebled in 2011

Dubai, January 02: Witchcraft and sorcery cases in the emirate rose from two in 2010 to six in 2011, according to Lieutenant Colonel Salah Bu Aseebah, director of the Anti-Economic Crime Unit at the Criminal Investigations Department of Dubai Police.

Bu Aseebah said this during the programme ‘Rouh Al Qanoon’ (Spirit of the Law) broadcast by the Noor Dubai radio station and presented on Monday evenings by lawyer Essa bin Haider.

He said such crimes happen either because of the victim’s greed for money or due to his indebtedness.

‘No Halal’ Meat Upsets UK Muslim MPs

London, January 02: The seat of the British Parliament has upset Muslim lawmakers by refusing to serve halal food at its restaurants.

“I did feel misled,” Lord Ahmed of Rotherham told The Daily Mail on Sunday, January 1.

“I think a halal option should be made available.”

The issue came to headlines after the Palace of Westminster, also known as the Houses of Parliament, had rejected requests by Muslim lawmakers to serve halal meat in its 23 restaurants and cafes.

Bag with 100 passports seized

New Delhi, January 02: A bag containing over 100 passports, including those of Indians, was seized by Custom officials at the Indira Gandhi International Airport here, police sources said on Monday.

However, no case has been registered yet as police is yet to get hold of the passports. Police sources said the bag came in a Turkish Airline flight and was seized by Custom officials during checking in the third week of December.

Hotel guests locked out at 12am on New Year’s

Dubai, January 02: New Year’s guests at a Denver Marriott were locked out of their rooms when the clock struck midnight and their room keys stopped working.

The 628-room Denver Tech Center Marriott says a room key malfunction kept guests out of their rooms from midnight until about 3 a.m. The hotel’s general manager, Jennifer Atkins, says it wasn’t immediately known whether the malfunction was related to the year change.

Egyptian wife beats hubby to death

Cairo, January 02: A 38-year-old welder was allegedly killed by his wife and her family over a family dispute.

According to Egyptian Arabic daily Al Youm Al Sabea’a, the welder identified as Mohammed Saeed had a severe dispute with his wife, after which she left his house and went to her parents’ house in Al Khosos area of Al-Qalyubia.

The brother of the deceased said the victim went to reconcile with the family of her wife, but alleges that his wife beat him up with the help of her father and brothers, leading to a massive brain injury which resulted in his death.

‘Israel killed 180 Palestinians in 2011’

Gaza, January 02: A recent report issued by the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) says around 180 Palestinians were killed by Israeli occupation forces in 2011.

According to reports, more than 120 people including children and women have been killed and over 600 injured in the Gaza strip during air raids and ground incursions in 2011.

“2011 was the bloodiest year since the end of Israel’s war on Gaza. We still continue to suffer from a huge shortage of some types of medicines,” Ashraf al-Qedra of Gaza Health Ministry told Press TV.

Dutch Church abused 1000’s of children

Dutch, January 02: Tens of thousands of children have been sexually abused in Dutch Catholic institutions over the past 65 years by priests and other Roman Catholic religious figures, a new report says.

The report, which is based on a survey of more than 34,000 people, said it could identify 800 Catholic clergy and other church employees guilty of sexually abusing children in the 40 years from 1945 and that more than 100 perpetrators were still alive.

Three Maoists killed in encounter

Sasaram, January 02: Three Maoists were killed in an encounter with security forces in Rohtas district on Monday.

“A joint team of STF of Bihar Police and Cobra battalion of CRPF launched the combing operation near Matiyaon village in Chutia police station when armed Maoists opened fire,” Superintendent of Police Manu Maharaj said.

In the ensuing encounter, three Maoists were killed on the spot, he said. The police brought the bodies to the district headquarters here, he said.

I will bomb Iran nuclear sites: Santorum

Tehran, January 02: Iran’s nuclear facilities upon his election as president if Tehran does not open up its sites for international arms inspectors.

Talking to NBC television’s “Meet the Press,” Santorum said he would tell the Iranian leaders to either open up those facilities, begin to dismantle them and make them available to the inspectors – or the US would attack them.

The former Pennsylvania senator also slammed US President Barack Obama for not doing enough to disrupt Iran’s nuclear program. This, he said, risked turning the US into a “paper tiger.”
