Anna advised month’s rest, poll plans in limbo

Pune, January 02: Doctors have advised Anna Hazare one month’s rest, putting a question mark over his plans to campaign against the Congress in the forthcoming Assembly polls in five states. The activist, admitted to hospital with chest congestion, is also suffering from osteosporosis, a disease of the bones, a doctor said.

“For one week, he is advised complete bed rest. Thereafter, we will re-assess his condition. We have told him he should take rest for one month, not strain himself,” Hazare’s physician Parag Sancheti, also the owner of Sancheti Hospital, told reporters.

Bomb threat to school turns out to be hoax

Sivaganga, January 02: Students and teachers of a private matriculation school were evacuated following an anonymous call at Manalur near Thirubhuvanam in Sivaganga district of Tamil Nadu, today. The correspondent of Alagu Malar matriculation school received an anonymous telephone call about the bomb threat in the morning. This prompted the school management to declare a holiday. The teachers and students were immediately evacuated from the campus.

Karmapa made an accused in Himachal currency case

Shimla, January 02: Tibetan religious head and 17th Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje has been made an accused in the seizure of unaccounted foreign currency last year from a Himachal Pradesh monastery where he is residing, police said here Monday.

‘During the course of investigation, the police came to the conclusion that the Karmapa had a role in the currency row,’ Himachal Pradesh Director General of Police D.S. Manhas told reporters.

He said the Karmapa’s name was included in the charge sheet as an accused. He is the 10th accused named in the formal set of charges.

CPI(M) flays Trinamool for Lokpal fiasco in RS

New Delhi, January 02: The CPI(M), which has accused the UPA government of “subterfuge and sabotage” in not allowing voting on Lokpal Bill in Rajya Sabha, on Monday said Trinamool Congress was part of the “orchestration” that helped the government.

“They (Trinamool) have been running with the hare and hunting with the hounds. They should have opposed it in the Union Cabinet of which they are a part.

They should have opposed it in Lok Sabha. Not having done that, they connived with others to ensure that the Bill is sabotaged,” senior CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury said here.

Girl tortured after refusing prostitution

Kabul, January 02: An Afghan official says a 15-year-old girl severely tortured for months by her in-laws who wanted to force her into prostitution will be sent to India for medical treatment.

Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqi said today that Sahar Gul’s mother-in-law and sister-in-law were arrested and her husband was being sought.

The case has shocked Afghanistan.

President Hamid Karzai has said that whoever used violence against Gul will be punished.

Bus accident kills 10 school children

‘US pullout promotes Iran-Iraq ties’

Tehran, January 02: Iran’s Ambassador to Iraq Hassan Danaei-fard says the withdrawal of US forces from Iraq paves the way for further expansion of ties between the two neighboring countries.

During their military occupation of Iraq, US forces made extra efforts to impede any enhancement of Tehran-Baghdad relations, so developing ties among the neighboring states went ahead rather slowly, Danei-fard said on Sunday.

The Iranian envoy, however, emphasized that Tehran spares no effort to expand its relations with Baghdad in all fields.

Mining case: IAS officer’s bail canceled

Hyderabad, January 02: The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Monday cancelled the bail of Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Y Srilakshmi in an illegal mining case.

The court directed her to surrender before the special court for Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) cases before January 6.

The High Court order came on a petition by the CBI, challenging a special court’s December 2 order that granted bail to Srilakshmi.
