New taxes are being avoided in budget

Hyderabad, January 04: Talking to newsmen in secretariat, Mr. Ramnarayan Reddy, Finance Minister hinted that last year, Govt. had not imposed any new tax. This year also, care will be taken not to add any new taxes in the state budget. This year’s budget will be realistic. In the wake of the criticism of public, State Govt. intends to give more weightage to welfare and developmental activities.

Night meals in RTC buses

Hyderabad, January 04: RTC authorities are starting to serve night meals in RTC night service on an experimental basis. Reduction of time for long distance buses is also being considered to the extent of two hours.

Mr. G. V. Ramana Rao, Secretary, operations told this yesterday to newsmen. Responsibility of maintaining security for the long distance buses is also receiving attention. More facilities and comforts will also be provided to long distance buses. Review meetings with the Depot managers and other officials will be regularly.

Irrigation projects to be completed before June 2016

Hyderabad, January 04: Govt. of A.P. will complete 30 irrigation projects including 15 in Telangana, 10 in Coastal Andhra and 5 in Rayalaseema.

While inaugurating the Departmental calendar for 2012, Minister for irrigation. Mr. P. Sudershan Reddy told the newsmen yesterday that Govt. released Rs. 3800 crore for clearing the previous bills of the contractors. He said problems are being created due to contractors’ approaching the courts. He also said that the demand of the contractors for EBS is being considered by the Govt.

Only 5% of the beneficiaries of 108 ambulance service are Muslims

Hyderabad, January 4: Of late 108 ambulance has assumed great importance in the city for medical emergency services. Earlier the 108 ambulance service was carried out by Satyam group but after Satyam group scandal GVK took over the operations from the Satyam group.

1-0-8 Emergency Response Service is a 24X7 emergency service for medical, police and fire emergencies. The service is available for the entire state of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Assam, Meghalaya and Madhya Pradesh.

Global recognition for Koraput hailed

Bhubaneswar,January 04: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday applauded the tribal community of Koraput for being chosen by the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organisation for recognition under its Globally Important Agricultural Heritage sites programme.

In his inaugural speech at the 99th annual session of the Indian Science Congress, which opened here, Dr. Singh said: “I congratulate the tribal community of Koraput for the global recognition they have received [from FAO] for their contribution to conserving biodiversity and climate resilient farming systems.’

Girl Student gang jailed for luring others into prostitution

Cairo, January 04: Masr Al Jededa (Heliopolis) public prosecution ordered jail to four female students after they were found guilty of cheating, theft, fraud and facilitating prostitution, reported the Egyptian Arabic newspaper Al Youm Al Sabea’a.

The four girls formed a gang to lure their colleagues to an apartment and offering them marriage opportunity and to see grooms.

3 Saudis wanted for EP unrest nabbed

Riyadh, January 04: Three Saudi nationals wanted for their involvement in unrest in the Eastern Province turned themselves in Tuesday and two others were arrested, the Interior Ministry said.

Ministry spokesman Gen. Mansour Al-Turki, quoted by Saudi Press Agency (SPA), also urged the remaining wanted people to give themselves up.

On Monday, authorities announced the names of 23 men wanted for involvement in trouble during the past few months in the Eastern Province.

Saudi seized 7 tonnes of bad baby milk

Riyadh, January 04: Saudi authorities foiled an attempt to market nearly seven tonnes of bad baby milk which could have poisoned thousands of children in the Gulf Kingdom’s second largest city, a newspaper said on Tuesday.

Municipal authorities in the western Red Sea port of Jeddah seized the shipments at a hideout, where owners were trying to change the expiry date on the milk cans, ‘Okaz’ Arabic language daily said.

Discriminatory behaviour continued with Urdu in its own city

Hyderabad, January 4: Despite repeated reminders, negligence is continued by the officials regarding Urdu language. It is not considered necessary to write Urdu in schools, offices, government schools, colleges and even picnic spots.

In the Golconda fort which owes much of its present grandeur to Mohammad Quli Qutub Shah, the founding father of Urdu poetry, the boards installed for the guidance of visitors are written in English and Telugu while Urdu has been ignored.

Zardari faces more trouble as SC fumes over graft amnesty

Islamabad, January 04: Pakistan’s Supreme Court today gave the government a “last and final opportunity” to implement its order to reopen graft cases against thousands of people, including President Asif Ali Zardari, that were closed under an amnesty that has been declared void.

A five-member special bench headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa said in its order that authorities were being given the “last and final opportunity” to implement its order scrapping the National Reconciliation Ordinance, a graft amnesty that was issued by former military ruler Pervez Musharraf in 2007.

Implement minorities’ sub-quota: Govt to PSUs

New Delhi, January 04: The government today directed the PSUs to ensure that its decision to carve out 4.5 per cent sub-quota for minorities out of 27 per cent for OBCs, is implemented in all recruitments from January 1, this year.

The Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) has written to the administrative ministries of different Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) asking them to seek compliance from the CEOs of the PSUs on minorities’ sub-quota from the quota for Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

Nitish, Modi in crorepati club

Patna, January 04: The number of Bihar’s crorepati ministers has more than doubled since last year. Twelve out of 29 ministers, including Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi, are crorepatis. Last year, only five had made it to the crorepati list.

This year, 130 MLAs, including RJD leader Abdul Bari Siddiquei, and two MLCs have failed to declare their assets within the December 31 deadline.

Anna’s health not improving, discharge postponed till Sunday

New Delhi, January 04: The health of anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare, who was admitted to a private hospital in Pune after suffering from viral infection, is not improving.

Doctor Paresh Sancheti said, “Anna’s health has not improved, he is not feeling any better. He could not sleep properly in night due to cough problem.”

The doctor also said that Hazare’s discharge which was scheduled for Friday has been postponed till Sunday.

Anna was rushed from his village Ralegan Siddhi to Sancheti hospital in Pune late on Saturday night after complaining of chest congestion.

Hurry-scurry woman hits car in rear, smashes into mall

Dubai, Janaury 04: A woman rushing to leave a shopping mall in Umm Al Quwain hit the car in the back in the reverse gear. She was so confused that she abruptly changed gears and smashed into the mall itself.

Police described it as a “funny” accident, saying the woman was clearly confused and did not mean to cause that mishap.

“She just hit the car behind her…instead of pushing the brakes, she changed gears and pressed petrol only to hit the mall and smash through the wall,” said Captain Saif Salim, director of UAQ police centres.

Dress code for Assembly staff

Hyderabad, January 04 (INN): As part of security measures, assembly staff will have a dress code from the ensuing budget session.

This was announced by Assembly Speaker Nadendla Manohar on Tuesday while addressing the staff at a New Year gathering.

“The dress code will be implemented to distinguish our staff from others during the assembly session and as part of security measures,” he told reporters after the get together. He said the dress code would come into effect from next assembly session.

Vijay Sai remand till Jan 17

Hyderabad, January 04 (INN): A city court on Tuesday remanded till January 17 Jagathi Publication’s Vice-chairman, Vijay Sai Reddy.

CBI arrested him on Monday in connection with the alleged disproportionate assets case of Kadapa MP YS Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Vijay Sai Reddy was taken into custody by a CBI team led by Superintendent of Police H Venkatesh after questioning him for about nine hours.

Don’t come back to Gulf: Iran warns US carrier

Tehran, January 04: A US aircraft carrier currently deployed in the Middle East should “not return” to its base in the Gulf, the head of Iran’s armed forces declared on Tuesday, adding ominously there would be no repeat warning.

“We advise and insist that this warship not return to its former base in the Persian Gulf,” Brigadier General Ataollah Salehi told reporters, according to the armed forces website.

“We don’t have the intention of repeating our warning, and we warn only once,” he was quoted as saying.
