Afridi decides never to be captain again

Krachi, January 05: “Heartbroken” after his controversy-marred stint as skipper last year, flamboyant Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi has vowed never to accept the national cricket team`s captaincy again.

“I don`t want to be sacrificed time and again over the captaincy issue and this time I have decided to just continue playing as a member of the team and enjoy my cricket,” he told reporters.

Afridi said whatever he could do for the team as captain he had done during his tenure.

Finger costs Virat Kohli half of match fee

Sydney, January 05: Indian batsman Virat Kohli was fined half of his match fee on Thursday for responding to barracking from the crowd by gesturing at them with his middle finger on day two of the second Test against Australia.

India spent all day in the field at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Wednesday, taking just one wicket as the Australian batsmen ran rampant and put themselves in a good position to go 2-0 up in the series.

Kohli, fielding at the boundary for much of the day, tweeted that he had been sorely provoked before responding with the finger gesture.

‘No need for guardians in Persian Gulf’

Tehran, January 05: A senior Iranian lawmaker says the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan and the presence of US forces in the region prove that these forces only cause insecurity in the region.

Alaeddin Boroujerdi, who heads Iran Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said Wednesday that establishing security in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman is the responsibility of regional countries.

“The Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman do not need guardians and the US has no business establishing security in the region,” he added.

Taliban to open Qatar office for peace talks

Qatar, January 05: Afghan President Hamid Karzai says his country agrees with US efforts to negotiate with the Taliban, as well as a Taliban decision to open an office in the Gulf state of Qatar to facilitate peace talks.

The Afghan government has several times offered talks. But the Taliban has set pre-conditions, in particular the withdrawal of NATO-led forces from Afghanistan. The Afghan government suspended peace talk efforts with the Taliban after the assassination of Afghan chief peace negotiator and former President Burhanudin Rabbani last September.

Modi’s Sadbhavana will now go to Godhra

Gandhinagar, January 05: Chief Minister Narendra Modi is taking his Sadbhavana Mission to Godhra. Around the 10th anniversary of the Sabarmati Express burning on February 27, he will hold a one-day fast at the town that saw the fiery carnage that set off the 2002 Gujarat riots.
Sources said some of those accused of setting the Sabarmati coaches on fire who were acquitted last year may also attend the fast. Modi has been holding one-day fasts across the state as part of his Sadbhavana rallies for communal harmony.

Snakes in President’s bathroom

Hyderabad, January 05: A day before President Pratibha Patil arrived here for her annual southern sojourn 11 days ago, as many as 10 snakes were caught by a special team deputed by the Nehru Zoological Park at Rashtrapathi Nilayam in Bolarum. One of the snakes, a racer, was found in the president’s bathroom!

In what has become an annual ritual, the team caught 10 snakes this year including a cobra, three rat snakes, four racers and two kraits before the president’s arrival. After staying at the RP Nilayam for 11 days, the president left for New Delhi on Wednesday.

Flesh trade boom in old city lanes

(Thanks TOI) It is evening and an uneasy calm envelopes a remote corner of Jahanuma area of the Old City. Attached to an old haveli here is a horse stable which has been converted into several single-room accommodations. Some of these rooms are rented out to the poor at throwaway rates but has men and women moving in and out in a hush-hush manner.

A pan dabbawala, located a few metres away, gives directions to those making enquiries about the makeshift brothel, even as he simultaneously takes fresh bookings on his mobile. As it gets darker, the number of men frequenting this area swells.

‘US after Taliban’s return to power’

Cong whip slams YS Jagan for Fee Porubata

Hyderabad, January 05 (INN): Legislative Council whip Y Siva Rami Reddy on Wednesday accused YSR Congress party of launching `Fee Porubata’ with an intention to gain political advantage.

CBI to take control of Ishrat Jahan fake encounter

New Delhi, January 05: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team constituted to probe Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case is set to take control of the investigation from Thursday.

The case was transferred to the crime branch after SIT had lodged a complaint declaring that the encounter was fake. The CBI so far has registered a case against 20 Gujarat police officers on grounds of murder and destruction of evidence.

The CBI earlier registered an FIR in the case with the CBI’s Mumbai Special Crime Unit.

No military courts, please: Pak PM

Islamabad, January 05: Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, who has asked the military not to interfere in civilian affairs, has now come out against a proposal to set up military courts in troubled Karachi.

The Associated Press of Pakistan quoted Gilani as criticising Tuesday the suggestion from former prime minister and opposition leader Nawaz Sharif.

“How is it possible in a democratic set-up? It is a double standard of the PML-N,” Gilani said in the National Assembly, referring to the Pakistan Muslim League led by Sharif.

Dalai Lama gets Mahatma Gandhi peace prize

Bodh Gaya, January 05: Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama was on Wednesday presented the Mahatma Gandhi International Award for Peace and Reconciliation on the fourth day of the ten-day Kalachakra initiations here.

The grand daughter of Mahatma Gandhi, Ila Gandhi, presented the award, instituted in 2003, to the Dalai Lama at the Kalachakra ground here.

Ila Gandhi, who is based in South Africa, is chairman of the Gandhi Development Trust, which gives the award.

Cabinet nod to filling SC, ST, OBC vacancies

New Delhi, January 05: Ahead of elections in five states, the Union Cabinet on Wednesday cleared a proposal to fill pending vacancies of Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and OBCs in the Central government, a move that will benefit around 50,000 people.

The proposal, discussed and approved in the Cabinet meeting held here this morning, comes soon after the government decision to allow 4.5 per cent reservation to the minorities within the OBC quota.

Major fire at IGI airport, property worth crores gutted

New Delhi, January 05: A major fire broke out in the cargo section of Indira Gandhi International Airport here early this morning causing damage to property worth crores but no one was injured.

The blaze erupted at around 12.45 a.m. at the Human Resource department of Celebi, the ground handling services company which manages cargo operations at IGI airport, sources said.

However, fire fighters received the call at around 1.15 a.m., police and fire brigade officials said.

Muslim scholar unites small parties in UP

6 Sri Ram Sene members held for hoisting Pak flag

Bangalore, January 05: The Karnataka police have arrested six members of the youth wing of the Sri Ram Sene in connection with the hoisting of a Pakistani flag at the Sindgi town in Bijapur.

It was alleged that some miscreants had hoisted a Pakistan flag over the Tahsildar’s office. As a result of this incident, there was violence in this area on January 1.

There was large scale damage as a result of the violence that erupted. A bandh call too was given by the Sri Ram Sene and also the Bajrang Dal.
