Purulia, January 06: A Congress leader on Friday suggested intervention of Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee to arrest the drift in the relationship between the two allies.

Manas Bhuniya, a minister in West Bengal cabinet and former state Congress president, said “chiefs of both Congress and Trinamool Congress should sit together and discuss the matter”.

CBI takes charge of probe in Ishrat Jahan case

Ahmedabad, January 06: CBI on Friday formally took over investigation into the 2004 fake encounter death of Mumbai college girl Ishrat Jahan and three others, following directions from the Gujarat High Court.

A team of CBI officials headed by IG V V Laxminarayan, who heads the Hyderabad Zone of the agency, was handed over the case papers and other documents related to the case here by officials of the high court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT), which has termed the police encounter as “fake”.

BSP, BJP fooling people, says Congress

New Delhi, January 06: The Congress Friday again slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for inducting a tainted former Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader in its fold and said the two parties were fooling the people of Uttar Pradesh by helping each other.

‘This, it seems, is a joint strategy of the BJP and the BSP. It seems the BJP is helping the BSP in the state. They are fooling the people of Uttar Pradesh,’ Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi told reporters here.

Delhi woman held in Bangalore for smuggling computer chips

Bangalore, January 06: Customs sleuths arrested a Delhi-based woman for attempting to smuggle in about 31,500 computer chips (memory cards) valued at Rs.63 lakh into the country from Hong Kong, a senior official said Friday.

‘The accused, Rosy Bhatia, 40, was trapped soon after she landed early Thursday by a Dragon Airways flight from Hong Kong, with the chips concealed in stockings around her thighs,’ the official said.

Bhatia was arrested for the offence under section 108 of the Customs Act, 1962.

Minority Development Forum to convene meeting

Hyderabad, January 6: An important meeting of Minorities Development Forum will be held on Saturday, January 7, 3:30 pm. Saudi spending to exceed 2012 budget, but surplus likely

Riyadh, January 06: Spending by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 2012 will likely be higher than budgeted, but the country will still run a fiscal surplus of 4 percent of GDP, says Fitch Ratings.

Spending growth will moderate in 2012 compared with last year. In 2011, spending growth reached 24 percent, the highest in a decade. The government raised public sector wages, created government jobs, injected capital into state-owned lenders and pledged more resources for housing. Capital spending – mainly on infrastructure – exceeded 12 percent of GDP.

Welfare activities for Muslims is Govt’s duty not gratitude

New Mayor takes over

1,000 more MBBS seats in AP next year

Hyderabad, January 06: As many as 1,000 additional seats will be available in medical colleges in the state from this academic year.
