Cleric calls Facebook un-Islamic, membership a sin

Tehran, January 07: An Iranian ayatollah has said that the social networking service Facebook was un-Islamic and being a member of it a sin, the ISNA news agency reported Saturday.

In Iran, it is common for senior clerics to be asked about their stance on certain social issues and whether these issues are compatible with Islamic norms.

Their answers are regarded as a form of decree.

ISNA on Saturday broadcast coverage of the response of Ayatollah Lotfollah Safi-Golpaygani, a senior cleric, to the question about Facebook and Iranian membership in the social networking service.

Bajrang vigilantes beat, humiliate Muslim trader

Bhopal, January 07: A Muslim cattle trader’s son was beaten and part of his head, one eyebrow and half his moustache shaved off by alleged Bajrang Dal workers in Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh after he refused to give them money to allow him to ferry cattle which the attackers alleged were meant for slaughter.

Police rescued the 25-year-old victim, Anish Aslam Kureshi, but charged him with unlawfully transporting cattle for slaughter under a state law for preserving cattle, and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. A sessions court in Chhindwara ordered his release on bail today.

Professor of Anthropology at the University of California, Karen Leonard observes that Hyderabadis who moved to Pakistan at the time of the Partition still carry with them the ‘mohajir’ label, struggling to find acceptance. They have now started moving to western countries in search of a better future.

Pervez Musharraf will be arrested on his arrival: Prosecutor

Islamabad, January 07: Former President Pervez Musharraf will be arrested on his arrival in Pakistan as a court conducting the trail of those charged with involvement in the assassination of former premier Benazir Bhutto has declared him a fugitive, a prosecutor said today.

Musharraf is a “proclaimed offender” or a fugitive who will be arrested on his arrival in the country, Federal Investigation agency prosecutor Chaudhry Zulfiqar Ali told reporters.

There is no need of any warrant for this arrest, he said.

In a belated move, the State government on Friday distributed cheques ranging from Rs 20,000 to Rs 3,00,000 to such youngsters at a function in the Jubilee Hall. In a first step of its kind, the government also gave them Character Certificates to remove the social stigma that comes with being an accused in a terror case.

Mumbai, January 07: Tuberculosis, which kills around 1,000 people a day in India, has acquired a deadlier edge. A new entity-ominously called Totally Drug-Resistant TB (TDR-TB )-has been isolated in the fluid samples of 12 TB patients in the past three months alone at Hinduja Hospital at Mahim. The hospital’s laboratory has been certified by the World Health Organization (WHO) to test TB patients for drug resistance.

Hyderabad, January 07: Congress leader Mr. Khaleequr Rahman categorized Mr. R. Krishnaiah as the important leader of the communal coteri and condemned his move to challenge the Muslim reservations in High Court.

He said that Sachar Committee and Ranganatha Mishra Commission have recommended for 15% reservations to be given to Minorities including 10% for the Muslims.

Central cabinet decided to provide 4.5% reservation to the Muslims. Instead of welcoming the move, Mr. Krishnaiah approached High Court for challenging it.
