Hyderabad, January 30: Five days after she left her infant at the passport office in the city, J Perllinda Vanburen Green has been asked by officials to produce her husband to take a DNA test to confirm their parenthood or legally adopt the surrogate child.

Green caused a flutter at the passport office here on January 25 when she left without taking the baby in protest against the so-called delay in issuing a passport to the child.

Jeddah, January 30: Women in Saudi Arabia will have the chance to watch football matches an other sport events directly for the first time in the conservative Moslem Gulf Kingdom when a decision allowing them in is enforced within two years.

Officials in charge of the King Abdullah Sports City in the western Red Sea town of Jeddah said they had received instructions to equip the stadium so it will be prepared to receive families in 2014.

Umpire kills cricket fan with bat

Dhaka, January 30: A cricket umpire killed a teenage spectator in Bangladesh by hitting him on the head with a bat in a dispute over a contested decision, police said on Sunday.

Nazrul Islam, 15, ran onto the pitch during an amateur game in the remote northern district of Kishoreganj and started an argument with the umpire, who took one of the players’ bats and hit the teenager.

Islam showed no serious injury from the blow during the game on Friday but suffered an internal hemorrhage overnight and died in hospital the following day, local police chief Mosharraf Hossain told AFP.

Man kills ex-wife and her lover after the men swapped wives

Pennsylvania, January 30: IN a weird incident, where wife swapping had gone awry, a bitter husband killed his estranged wife and her lover in a fit of rage.

Lloyd Hill beat Frederick Tarantino to death with a baseball bat before repeatedly stabbing his wife, Stefanie Hill, reports Daily Mail.

The husband followed Tarantino once he left work and trailed him to an apartment where his estranged wife was living with the couple’s teenage daughter.

The man first attacked Tarantino and then entered the apartment to attack his wife.

Makkah, January 30: More than 218 poor and destitute families, west of Hafr Al-Batin international road network, are struggling to keep warm this winter because their corrugated iron shacks turn into freezers in the current sub-zero temperatures.
Ramadan, the main breadwinner of a family of 10, said he lives with his family in a shack measuring around three square meters and only has a gas heater to keep his family warm in the extreme cold weather. “My wife and kids sit in front of the gas heater all night until their legs are roasted,” he told Al-Youm Arabic newspaper.

15 yrs old girl raped, burnt alive

Bhopal, January 30: A minor girl in Madhya Pradesh’s Khargaon district was raped and then set afire when she threatened to inform the authorities, police said. She died in hospital Sunday.

The Class 10 student was raped by her neighbour, Rajendra Yadavm when she was alone at her house in Salakhedi village Friday.

The 15-year-old girl was referred to MY Hospital, Indore where she succumbed to her injuries Sunday.

“The girl sustained over ninety percent burns and doctors could not save her. We have arrested the accused,” said Additional Superintendent of Police S.S. Chouhan.

Son kills mother for wife in old city

Hyderabad, January 30: A woman was allegedly murdered by her son in Asad Baba Nagar on Sunday. Tahera Begum, 52, was allegedly killed by her 32-year-old son, Aleem, in their rented house. According to Bahadurpura police, late on Saturday night, Aleem woke up his neighbours saying that his family was attacked by unidentified miscreants.

‘No chance’ of military coup in Pak: Gilani

Davos, January 29: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that there was ‘no chance’ of a military coup in Pakistan ever as all stakeholders including the army, desires democracy and stability in the country.

“I don’t think there will be a coup in Pakistan ever. There is no threat to democracy,” Gilani told reporters on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) at Davos in Switzerland.

No state institution, including the military, or the people of Pakistan want a coup and all stakeholders favour a democracy, he said.

There was ‘no chance’ of a military takeover, he said.

Bhanwari Devi case: CBI collectively quizzes six accused

Jodhpur, January 29: Six accused in government nurse Bhanwari Devi’s disappearance and killing were collectively quizzed Sunday by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in a barrack of the Jodhpur Central Jail, informed sources said.

Those who were interrogated include the nurse’s husband Amarchand, Pukhraj Bishnoi, Dinesh Bishnoi and three kidnappers — Sohan Lal, Shahabuddin and Baldev Jat alias Balia, the sources added.

The CBI had taken Pukhraj Bishnoi to the jail Saturday also and quizzed him in front of his father Sohan Lal Bishnoi in a barrack here.

Government reiterates order on Army chief’s age issue, to settle case in court

New Delhi, January 29: The defence ministry said Sunday it would prefer to settle the issue of army chief General V.K. Singh’s age in the Supreme Court rather than deal with it administratively. It also reiterated that its July 2011 directive to the army to place the date of birth at May 10, 1950 instead of May 10, 1951 holds good.

Defence ministry sources said here that the government has reiterated its instruction of July 2011 in a letter dated Jan 23, 2012.

New Delhi, January 29: Taking a dig at Rahul Gandhi, BJP on Sunday said that the Congress general secretary should be made the Prime Minister for the remaining two years of the UPA rule so that people can judge his ability.

Israeli drone crashes during test flight

Gaza, January 29: An Israeli Heron TP drone has crashed during a joint operation performed by the Israeli military and the developer company of the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

The most advanced Israeli drone crashed during its test flight on Sunday morning in an area near the Tel Nof military base in central Israel.

No injuries were reported in the incident and an investigation has been launched into the cause of the crash.

The Heron TP is the largest Israeli UAV with a 26-meter-long wingspan. It can fly for up to 45 hours and carry a payload of 1,000 kilograms.

Nepal minister sounds warning to Maoist government

New Delhi, January 29: A senior minister from Nepal’s Terai plains has threatened to look for an alternative to the Maoist-led government if the country’s three major political parties fail to “take positive steps” within a month to complete the peace process and draft a new constitution.

“In a month’s time, if the peace and constitutional processes do not take positive steps ahead we will begin searching for an alternative to the present government,” said Nepal’s Health and Population Minister Rajendra Mahato, who heads the Sadbhavana Party.

Boycott Olympics if Dow stays, says Chouhan

Bhopal, January 29: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan Sunday demanded that India should boycott the London Olympics if Dow Chemicals remains a sponsor.

“India is now an economic superpower and not a weak country. Either Dow should be removed from the sponsorship of Olympics or India should not participate,” he told reporters here.

“How can India remain silent on the issue? The centre should talk clearly to them,” Chouhan said, referring to the London organisers.

10 soldiers killed in Syria violence

Syria, January 29: The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that 10 members of the military died when their convoy was attacked on Sunday.

In a similar incident on Saturday, an armed terrorist group killed at least seven Syrian troops in the countryside near the capital, Damascus.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011.

The Arab League, which had sent a delegation to the country to monitor the situation, suspended the mission earlier this week.

Gaza, January 29: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak are using Iran’s nuclear program to deflect attention from the regime’s heinous crimes in the Middle East, an Israeli daily writes.

Netanyahu, with Barak’s help, has turned the Iranian nuclear program into an “impressive ploy” to divert attention from settlement policy and the perpetuation of the occupation, wrote Ha’aretz in its Sunday editorial.
