34 Muslim drivers suspended for praying

Thirty-four Muslim drivers for Hertz claimed they were suspended for praying during work hours, but the company contended they were reprimanded for abusing break times.

Backed by their union, the drivers protested Wednesday outside the Hertz counter at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, where they are based.

“This is an outrageous assault on the rights of these workers and appears to be discriminatory based on their religious beliefs,” Tracey A. Thompson, secretary-treasurer of Teamsters Local 117, said in a statement.

Muslim, Christian graves desecrated in Israeli city

Jerusalem, October 08: Headstones at a Muslim and a Christian cemetery were desecrated by unknown assailants in Jaffa on Saturday, the Jewish holy fast day of Yom Kippur, an Israeli website said.

Pictures on the www.nana10.co.il Hebrew website showed one gravestone with the words “death to Arabs” spray painted in Hebrew and the words “Price tag,” a slogan used by militant Jewish West Bank settlers and their supporters, on another.

Saudi consulate in Hyderabad soon

Sania’s knee operation in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, October 08: There is no let up in the chequered career graph of the injury-prone Indian tennis ace, Sania Mirza.

However, there was a positive development on Saturday with her decision to go ahead with a surgery on the left knee in a premier corporate hospital here on Saturday.

Her father Imran Mirza told INN that the operation was successful and the entire family, including hubby Shoaib Malik, were present at the time of the surgery.

‘Walkathon’ to empower women

Hyderabad, October 8: The Confederation of Women Entrepreneurs (COWE) organised Walkathon for Women Empowerment in city today. Mrs. D. K. Hyderabad, October 8: As soon as you enter the interior part of Golconda fort you will see Masjid Bahmani opposite to the arsenal. The mosque was built by Mohammad Shah Bahmani in 1513. The 3-arch mosque is quite beautiful and is standing with a very strong condition today also a rare exemplar of its architecture. Despite all these features the mosque is deserted.

Muslims need to prepare a comprehensive strategy to rehabilitate mosques and arrange for five times prayers in them, with forbearance and through peaceful means.

Acting Saudi ambassador to India arrives in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, October 8: Acting Saudi ambassador to India, his Excellency Sulaiman H Alqureshi will arrive in Hyderabad on October 8 at 9:20 am.

After a good will meet with chief minister, he will attend farewell function of Hajj pilgrims as chief guest. The function will be presided over by Khadim Quran Peer Syed Shabbir Naqshbandi.

Later his Excellency will attend a lunch reception and at 4 pm he will attend ‘meet the press’ programme at Hotel Anmol Continental. He will also visit Hajj house.

His body will be kept for last glimpse at Makhdoom Bhawan, Himayat nagar till Saturday 9:30 am. Dr. Raj Bahadur Gaud was born on July 21, 1918 at Goulipura, Hyderabad. He completed his primary education from Mufeedul Anam, Dharmawant and Rifa-e-aam schools. He completed MBBS in 1943. He was elected as Rajya Sabha member in 1952.

Duo held for cheating jobless youth

Hyderabad, October 08: Two partners of a hotel in Banjara Hills and who were on the run for the past two months, were nabbed on Friday for cheating several unemployed youth to a tune of Rs 70 lakh in the name of providing jobs in a hotel they own in Dubai.

The nabbed duo – Syed Kaleemullah Hussaini alias Waseem of Malakpet and Zeena Suzen Varkey alias Zareen Fatima of Banjara Hills were business partners in Gazebo International Hotel at Road No 12, Banjara Hills.

‘Vengeful brother’ with swords nabbed

Hyderabad, October 08: Police on Friday claimed to have averted a murder conspiracy with the arrest of a person and seizure of two swords from him. The accused allegedly planned to kill a person who eloped with his younger sister, police said.

On information, Task Force North Zone sleuths nabbed Chokatwale Shenna alias Shannu, a resident of NTR Nagar who sells garlic and ginger at the NTR Nagar vegetable market.

Police said Shannu has five sisters, one of who fell in love with one Ravi.

Demand set to exceed supply in 7 cities by 2015

Hyderabad, October 08: The demand for affordable housing in top seven cities, including Hyderabad, is likely to outstrip supply by 2015, according to Cushman & Wakefield (C&W). The real estate consulting firm in its annual report found that the estimated demand for residential property in cities namely National Capital Region, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune and Kolkata is expected to touch 2.3 million units over the next five years while the estimated supply will be approximately 1 million units, leaving a shortfall of 130 per cent i.e. over 1.3 million units.

Government proceeding Rajiv Rahadari project

Hyderabad, October 08: The Telangana agitation has come as blessing in disguise for the contractors from Andhra region who were awarded the AP Road Development Corporation (APRDC) project of developing the 207- km Hyderabad-Karimnagar-Ramagundam road into a four lane road at a cost of Rs 1,358 crore.

When the project was grounded, TRS chief K Chandrasekhara Rao and several Congress MLAs from Karimnagar district wanted change in its design.

Rao wrote a letter to the then chief minister K Rosaiah demanding that APRDC should develop the Rajiv Rahadari on the lines of NH-9.

500 MW Kakatiya plant shuts down

Hyderabad, October 08: The 500 MW Kakatiya Thermal Power Plant (KTPP) has become the first victim of Sakala Janula Samme forcing the APGenco officials to shut down operations completely due to shortage of coal.

The strike of Singareni miners is affecting the supply of coal to NTPC Ramagundam and NTPC Simhadri. The units are operational near to technical minimum. The coal supplies to KTPP virtually came to a nil on Friday.

SCB, GHMC locked in a dog-fight

Hyderabad, October 08: As the dog menace in the city assumes alarming proportions, a sideshow and a hilarious one at that, is unfolding between the Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). The SCB has been hiring a dog squad with a van too from the GHMC for the last four months as it receives about 10 complaints of dog bites a day.

“The squad has been rounding up about 50- 60 dogs a week and frees them on the outskirts of the city. But it hardly helps as the dogs are coming back,” explains S Balakrishna, chief executive officer, SCB.

Silpa’s brother joins TDP with his followers

Hyderabad, October 08: The YSR Congress Party has received a jolt in Kurnool district as its leader Silpa Chakrapani Reddy formally joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) on Friday.

Chakrapani, brother of Congress MLA and former minister Silpa Mohan Reddy, along with his followers met TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu at NTR Bhavan and later joined the party. A public meeting will be held soon either in Hyderabad or Kurnool to induct Chakrapani and his followers into the TDP.
