Graft can be fought only through political system: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi, October 04: Corruption can be fought only through the political system, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi said Tuesday, as he called for efforts to encourage participation of youth in politics.

Speaking at a Youth Congress convention here, Gandhi said people talk of corruption but it can be fought through democratic means.

‘If you want to fight corruption, then this can only be done through the political system, through democratic means,’ he said.

Burnt body of woman found in Delhi

New Delhi, October 04: The burnt body of a young woman was found in north Delhi Tuesday, police said.

The body was found from Dhruv Enclave at Aman Vihar. Police said the woman’s throat was slit and the upper portion of the body was burnt.

The surgical blade used to slit her throat was also recovered. The assailants might have tried to deface her by setting her on fire but her face had minor burn injuries only and could be identified, police said.

Gujarat told to provide security to Bhatt, family

New Delhi/Ahmedabad, October 04: The central government Tuesday asked the Gujarat governemnt to provide adequate security to police officer Sanjiv Bhatt, who has arrested on charges of insubordination, and his family.

The home ministry instructions to Gujarat came hours after an Ahmedabad court reserved its orders on the state’s revision petition against the judicial remand of the officer for Oct 7.

He starts accepting orders in bulk to raise his income, not for his family, but for raising funds for organising Ramlila: the mythological play based on the Hindu epic Ramayana.

Like Khan, many Muslims in Mumtaz Nagar village of Uttar Pradesh’s Faizabad district have been keeping alive the village’s decades-old custom, under which all arrangements for holding Ramlia are looked after by members of the minority community.

85-year-old illiterate memorises Quran

Riyadh, October 04: An 85-year-old Saudi woman has memorised nearly a fifth of the Quran although she has never been to school and is suffering from heart diseases and diabetes, a newspaper in the Gulf Kingdom reported on Tuesday.

The woman has emerged as one of the few regular attendants of Quran memorisation classes for old people in the central Saudi town of Shaqra although she lives nearly 20 km away, Sabq Arabic language daily said.

Call all-party, CMs meet to discuss poverty: BJP

New Delhi, October 04: The BJP on Tuesday alleged that the ongoing debate on poverty has shown that the UPA government is “insensitive” and demanded that a meeting of chief ministers and all political parties be held to discuss the matter and the problems related to it.

“The government has been completely insensitive on this matter… There are so many versions of what the poverty line should be… This is a grave situation and there is complete disarray. How long will it take to decide how many people are poor,” BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said.

Miriti, October 04: The Congress would project Rahul Gandhi as the future leader of the party, senior leader and Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said on Tuesday.

CBI registers PE to probe CWG OC recruitment scam

New Delhi, October 04: The CBI on Tusday registered a Preliminary Enquiry to probe alleged irregularities in the appointment of officials in the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee with hefty pay packages.

CBI sources said that the PE was lodged against unknown persons in the Games organising body after it received several complaints and references from the Central Vigilance Commission claiming violation of norms in the appointments.

Suspected Maoist conduit arrested in Delhi

New Delhi, October 04: A suspected Maoist conduit, accused of receiving ‘protection money’ from the Essar group on behalf of the rebels, was Tuesday arrested in south Delhi by Chhattisgarh Police, police said. The woman’s arrest triggered condemnation from activists who termed it ‘illegal’.

Soni Sori, a tribal teacher from Dantewada district in Chhattisgarh, was arrested from Katwaria Sarai area.

Soni, who is in her 30s, was later brought before a court which sent her to judicial custody for a day.

No compromise with Modi govt, Bhatt tells court

Ahmedabad, October 04: Suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt refused to make any compromise with the Gujarat government after a local court proposed that if he went on police remand for about three hours his bail plea could be heard on Tuesday itself.

The response by Bhatt, who has accused Chief Minister Narendra Modi of complicity in 2002 post-Godhra riots, came after Sessions Judge G N Patel made the proposal during hearing on the state government’s revision application for his remand.

On 22nd day, no end in sight to Telangana strike

Hyderabad, October 04: With the centre not giving any assurance on carving a separate Telangana state out of Andhra Pradesh, the indefinite ‘people’s strike’ in the region went into its 22nd day Tuesday with no end in sight.

Over 800,000 employees of the government, workers of the state-owned Singareni Collieries and Road Transport Corporation (RTC) and teachers continued to stay away from work.

Coal production in the Singareni mines, spread over four districts, remained crippled while buses of RTC were off the roads in Hyderabad and nine other districts for the 16th day.

Cocaine case haunts Fardeen

Mumbai, October 04: Bollywood actor Fardeen Khan has been found guilty by Mumbai court on charges of consuming cocaine. The actor was booked in the case of cocaine seizure in 2001 for buying 1 gm of cocaine from a drug dealer in Mumbai, but later he was granted bail.

The ‘No Entry’ actor would now be sentenced on November 2.

It must be known that consumption of more than a gram of banned substances can lead to a jail sentence of 10 years.

Telangana stir triggers power crisis in AP

Hyderabad, October 04: Andhra Pradesh is facing an unprecedented power crisis as a direct result of the ongoing indefinite general strike by Telangana protagonists.

The gap between power demand and supply has widened to 50 million units (MU) per day with the demand touching a peak of 275 MU because of continued dry spell in the state.

During the corresponding period last year, the demand for power was only 223 MU.

Consequently, heavy power cuts are being imposed across the state with industries and agriculture being the worst hit.

Student commits suicide over parents scolding

Hyderabad, October 4: A student dejected over his parents scolding committed suicide at Kukatpally. According to Kukatpally police 18 year old T Ravi who was said to be the son of Rao, resident of Venkateshwaranagar was the student of engineering. Ravi used to be frequently absent from the college and was weak in studies. On which his mother scolded him on September 29. When he was alone in the house Ravi tried to hang himself however he was immediately shifted to the hospital where he died last night.

Saudi Wife blames ageing husband for adultery

Riyadh, October 04: A Saudi woman who had affairs with five men working at a hospital in the Gulf kingdom told police she had done so because she is married to an old man.

Members of the country’s religious police caught the 24-year-old woman in action with a 26-year-old nurse inside his car in the hospital park in the western town of Makkah, newspaper said on Tuesday.

“She then confessed to having an affair with five nurses and doctors working at the same hospital,” Sabq Arabic language daily said.
