8,009 challans issued to erring RTC drivers

Hyderabad, September 03: It seems that most Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation bus drivers in the city are flouting traffic rules and figures tell as much.

With traffic inspectors issuing as many as 8,009 challans totaling Rs. 10.81 lakh to bus drivers, traffic police and APSRTC, Greater Hyderabad zone have decided to take up a special drive to educate drivers over traffic rules.

C V Anand, additional commissioner of police (Traffic) said contract drivers recruited by the RTC management are mainly causing traffic violations as they lack awareness of rules.

Malaysian TV journalist killed in Somali capital

Mogadishu, September 03: A Malaysian TV station says one of its journalists has been shot dead in the Somali capital.

A statement on Bernama’s website says 41-year-old Noramfaizul Mohd Nor was killed today in Mogadishu as he accompanied the aid agency Putera 1Malasyai Club on a humanitarian mission.

A Somali official says the man was shot as he was traveling in a car near a busy junction known as Kilometer Four.

The official asked not to be named because he was not authorised to speak to the press.

Man kills colleague for not repaying Rs 150

Coimbatore, September 03: An 18-year-old youth was murdered in Neelambur in the city over 150 which he had borrowed from a colleague at work and could not return in time.

The victim, identified as K Shyam Babu, was working at PSG Foundry near Coimbatore Airport. He was roughed up by co-worker T Samareesh Kumar (19) on Thursday who punched him severely on his abdomen. Shyam Babu suffered internal bleeding and he was declared brought dead to the Government General Hospital here.

Hyderabad, September 03: Facing searching questions over his wealth, the Telugu Desam president, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, on Friday made public a list of his and his family’s assets — Rs 37.92 crore, minus liabilities of Rs 27.85 crore.

Mr Naidu listed only the acquisition value — the value of the asset at the time of purchase — and not the current market value.

In 2009, however, while filing his nomination papers for the Assembly elections, Mr Naidu needed to file the market value of his assets.

Russia to protect its companies in Libya

Moscow, September 03: Russia will continue to protect the interests of Russian companies operating in Libya, a government spokesperson said.

“We are not just having the intention, but undertaking practical measures,” the Kremlin spokesman was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

The Kremlin said prospects for Russian oil and railway companies to continue operating in Libya were “not too bad” and they could complete their contracts.

Moscow had billions of dollars worth of energy and infrastructure deals with Libya under Muammar Gaddafi.

Converted man reflects on observing his first Ramadan

Worcester, September 03: A Worcester man has been reflecting on the experience of observing his first Ramadan as a recently converted Muslim.

Sayhan Vernon, 32, decided to convert Islam in 2010 after being brought up in a Christian home and then being an atheist for a number of years.

“I’ve never been content with other people’s explanations or another way I could say it: I was guided by Allah,” said Mr Vernon.

Mr Vernon described his first Ramadan as an “achievement.”

Murders for petty reasons on the rise in Old City

Hyderabad, September 02: On August 25, 18-year-old youth Mir Iqbal Ali was killed in Al Jubail Colony in Chandrayangutta. The reason: He asked Abdul Hameed to return his friend’s mobile he had taken for repair. Abdul Hameed, the 24-year-old mobile technician, dodged Ali for a while but when Ali mounted pressure, he knifed him to death. Murders over petty disputes is on the rise and in the last three weeks alone, at least six persons were done to death due to minor issues in the Old City.

Man held for ‘raping’ sister-in-law

Jalna, September 02: A man has been arrested for allegedly raping his sister-in-law and making a video clip of the act, police said on Friday.

The women’s husband and in-laws, residents of Pension Pura area here in central Maharashtra, have also been booked for allegedly torturing her for dowry, they said.

According to the police, the victim’s husband Shaikh Harun Shaikh Hussain (40), brother-in-law Aleem Shaikh Hussain (30), father in-law Shaikh Hussain and mother-in-law Khatimabi demanded Rs 50,000 from her for buying a plot.

Apex court issues notice to 26/11 accused

New Delhi, September 02: The Supreme Court Friday issued notice to Fahim Harshad Mohammad Yusuf and Sababuddin Shaikh, acquitted by a trial court of involvement in the Nov 26, 2008 Mumbai terror attack.

The bench of Justice Aftab Alam and Justice R.M. Lodha issued notice on a petition by the Maharashtra government.

Yusuf and Shaikh were accused of providing logistic support for the attack. They were acquitted by a trial court and the verdict was later upheld by the Bombay High Court. The two were acquitted for want of corroborative evidence.

Eid prayers under the shadow of gun

Patna, September 02: The police firing which claimed four lives in June this year overshadowed the Eid festivity in Bhajanpur village of Forbesganj block in Araria district. The local Muslims faced unexpected heavy presence of police force following the imposition of Article 144 on the day of Eid on 31st August. The administration was apprehending outbreak of anger over the June 3 firing. Nothing happened. The Muslims didn’t even come out of the village to offer Eid prayers.

Chandrababu Naidu declares assets

Hyderabad, September 02: Facing questions about his wealth in the wake of Anna Hazare’s crusade against corruption, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president and former Andhra Pradesh chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu Friday declared his assets and those of his family members.

Naidu told a news conference that if anybody proves that he and his family members own assets other than what he declared, he would hand them over on a platter.

He revealed that the family members own assets worth Rs.39.88 crore. He, however, has assets of only Rs.40 lakh in his name.

Elderly man hit by triple riders, dies

Hyderabad, September 2: Syed Khaja (60) was passing by Tadban area when 3 youth riding a bike hit him, as a result he fell down and sustained serious head injuries. The unfortunate road accident occurred at Kalapathar area where the 60 year old man was hit by motor cycle on the day of Eid-ul-Fitr. He was shifted to hospital where he succumbed to injuries the next day. The incident transformed the house of Eid to the house of mourning.

23yr old kidnapped & raped by neighbour

New Delhi, September 02: It’s not just the increasing number of crimes against women that is raising concerns in the Capital. Often the seemingly callous attitude of the cops adds to a victim’s woes. A 23-year-old woman was allegedly kidnapped after being drugged from KG Marg area by her stalker who took her to Western UP in a car, seeking revenge for an ‘insult’. As a student I wasn’t very studious

Islamabad, September 02: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has admitted that he was “not very studious” when he was a student.

Talking to a group of youngsters in a PTV programme Thursday, Gilani said: “In our age, there were less opportunities.”

He added: “As a student, I was not very studious but I was an all-rounder and participated in extra-curricular activities.”

“…I read poetry of Mirza Ghalib in detail,” Associated Press of Pakistan quoted Gilani as saying.

Tripoli, August 02: Colonel Muammar Gaddafi has asked his loyalists to ‘engulf Libya in flames’, insisting that they are ‘not women’ and will not give up fighting easily.

“Let there be a long fight and let Libya be engulfed in flames. We will not give up. We are not women. We will continue fighting.” a defiant Gaddafi was heard saying on a Syrian TV broadcast.

According to Sky News, it was unclear when the message was recorded.

Meanwhile, officials in Benghazi said that forces loyal to Gaddafi in the city of Sirte have been given an extra week’s time to surrender.

Worshipers face difficulty for ablution thanks to water board negligence

Hyderabad, September 2: Thousands of worshipers faced difficulty for performing ablution, despite elaborate arrangements at Eidgah Meeralam, thanks to the negligence of water board. The worshipers faced trouble when the water stopped coming from the taps. When the water board officials were contacted it was told that the problem occurred as the water pump suddenly stopped.

Hundreds of worshipers were seen using drinking water packets for performing ablution while thousands of worshipers were seen heading for Meeralam tank to perform ablution.

Two people die at Dabeerpura crossing

Hyderabad, September 2: Two persons were killed at Dabeerpura crossing when a train hit them.

40 year old Gopinath resident of Sayeedabad was a habitual drunkard. Yesterday night he went to his house and misbehaved with his parents on which they scolded him. In drunken state Gopinath committed suicide in front of MMTS going to Lingampally from Falaknuma near Dabeerpura railway crossing.

In another incident occurred at Dabeerpura railway crossing, a train hit a 70 year old unidentified man. He died on the spot.
