Rain-related death toll touches 18

Hyderabad, September 04: The death toll due to the heavy rains that lashed across the state under cyclonic impact has touched 18 on Saturday. According to Disaster Management Commissioner T Radha, so far at least 18 people were killed due to rains-related incidents in all the three regions of the State.

Fountains to add more beauty to Hussain Sagar

Hyderabad, September 04: The historic Hussain Sagar lake has just got a face lift. The State Government has installed seven fountains, which will not only improve the water quality, but will add to the beauty of the lake.

Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Saturday inaugurated seven High Jet fountains, installed at a cost of Rs 1.32 Crore. Each fountain goes up to the height of 20 metres and discharges about 160 Cum water per hour. According to officials the fountains would enhance the dissolved oxygen and improve the water quality.

CBI probe is against Jagan, not YSR: DL Ravindra

Hyderabad, September 04: Health Minister Dr DL Ravindra Reddy came to the defense of CBI joint director VV Laxminarayana here on Saturday while condemning the statement of former agriculture minister YS Vivekananda Reddy.

Vivekananda Reddy had earlier commented that the CBI joint director Laxminarayana was a corrupt official. The minister took exception to it and made light of Vivekanand Reddy’s comments. Speaking to the media persons, Ravindra Reddy said, “it is meaningless,” to pass such comments against the CBI official.

Vivekananda Reddy on Friday had alleged that Laxminarayana was involved in corruption and was a close relative of Telugu Desam leader Payyavula Kesav. He also alleged that the raids on YSR Congress party president Jaganmohan Reddy was a drama being enacted at the instance of Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu.

Global economy in ”danger zone” WB

Beijing, September 04 :The world economy is stepping into a ”new danger zone,” World Bank President Robert Zoellick said on Saturday, as growth slows and investor confidence weakens.

Speaking in Beijing, Zoellick urged Europe and the United States to tackle their debt problems, and noted that near record-high food prices and volatile commodity markets are threatening the most world’s vulnerable people.

“The financial crisis in Europe has become a sovereign debt crisis, with serious implications for the Monetary Union, banks, and competitiveness of some countries,” he said.

New Delhi, September 04:Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his ministerial team Saturday declared their assets that places his own wealth at Rs.5.1 crore ($1.3 million), while Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath is richest with over Rs.250 crore ($55 million). Defence Minister A.K. Antony seems the poorest with Rs.35 lakh ($77,000).

The declaration, required under the Code of Conduct for Ministers, also follows Manmohan Singh taking strong exception to remarks by a senior member of parliament on his personal integrity during a debate last month.

‘Ex-NSA had differences with PM on Pak talks’

New Delhi, September 03: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and former National Security Advisor (NSA) MK Narayanan differed on talks with Pakistan, reveals a cable released by the whistle-blowing website WikiLeaks.

The cable exposes Narayanan as readily conceding that he had differences with Prime Minister Singh.

London, September 03: Former England skipper Nasser Hussain found support for his comment referring to India fielders as ‘donkeys’ from Michael Vaughan, on Saturday.

Encroachments make a swift return

Hyderabad, September 03: The drive to remove illegal encroachments from footpaths a few days back has served little purpose, as structures have come up again at the same places.
Speaking to Express, Town Planning officials said temporary encroachments on road margins have sprang up again at places from where they were removed, due to lack of monitoring by GHMC staff and traffic police.
The civic body has proposed to take up the removal drive in the first week of every month but in view of festivals, it has been put on hold for a few days.

8,009 challans issued to erring RTC drivers

Hyderabad, September 03: It seems that most Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation bus drivers in the city are flouting traffic rules and figures tell as much.

With traffic inspectors issuing as many as 8,009 challans totaling Rs. 10.81 lakh to bus drivers, traffic police and APSRTC, Greater Hyderabad zone have decided to take up a special drive to educate drivers over traffic rules.
C V Anand, additional commissioner of police (Traffic) said contract drivers recruited by the RTC management are mainly causing traffic violations as they lack awareness of rules.

Court grants CID two days custody of Sunil Reddy

Hyderabad, September 03: A local court on Friday granted the state Crime Investigation Department (CID) a two-day police custody of T Sunil Reddy, former journalist and consultant with Sricity SEZ who was arrested recently on charges of forgery).

The investigative agency had earlier sought Sunil Reddy’s custody for five days stating that they needed to make him undergo a polygraph test and also get experts to compare his handwriting.
However, the court granted only two days of custody from Saturday onwards.
An advocate will be present with Reddy from 10 a.m.

‘Sweeya was always a quiet but bright student’

Hyderabad, September 03: Near to the small shed built to house and worship Ganesha at the KVR Towers at Miyapur, another enclosure is being readied to receive the body of Yalavarthi Sweeya.

The third year B.Tech student at IIT-Patna had committed suicide by jumping off her hostel building on Thursday morning, within just 10 days of her 19th birthday.

Always regarded as a quiet person by those who knew her, Sweeya was an academically bright student who was also the state 10th rank holder in SSC exam, scoring 100 per cent marks in Mathematics and General Sciences.
