Katrina visits Chisti shrine in Fatehpur Sikri

Agra, September 06: Actress Katrina Kaif on Monday visited the shrine of Sheikh Salim Chisti to offer prayers and untie the sacred thread, which she had tied during the shooting of her forthcoming film Mere Brother Ki Dulhan.

Dressed in a black suit and a green scarf, Katrina arrived very early at the dargah and offered a chadar. Assisted by Khadim bhai and Shanu, she then untied a ‘dhaga’ (sacred thread) as fulfilment of her “mannat”.

Reddys in CBI net, lodged in Hyderabad jail

Hyderabad, September 06: The CBI has finally begun a crackdown on the Reddy brothers of Bellary. The agency on Monday arrested former Karnataka tourism minister and BJP MLA Janardhan Reddy and his brother-in-law Srinivasa Reddy. The two have been remanded to judicial custody in Hyderabad.

Janardhan Reddy, however, insisted that he in innocent. “The truth will prevail,” he said.

The study was conducted by Consumer Voice and 12 brands of milk — Amul, Mother Dairy, Reliance, Paras, Delhi Milk Scheme, Milkam, Vita, Aarey, Parag, Verka, Sanchi and Saras — were tested in an accredited laboratory. All the brands had total plate counts more than the permissible range.

Magnitude 6.6 earthquake hits western Indonesia

Jakarta, September 06: A powerful earthquake jolted the western Indonesian island of Sumatra early on Tuesday, killing a 12-year-old boy and sending people streaming from houses, hotels and at least one hospital in panic.

The magnitude 6.6 quake was centered 60 miles (100 kilometers) southwest of the city of Medan and 62 miles (110 kilometers) beneath the earth’s crust, according to the US Geological Survey.

The quake rattled people from their sleep in towns and villages across the island’s northern tip.

Wildfire destroys nearly 500 homes in Texas

Bastrop, September 06: A roaring wildfire raced through rain-starved farm and ranchland in Central Texas on Monday, destroying nearly 500 homes during a rapid advance that was fanned in part by howling winds from the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee.

At least 5,000 people were forced from their homes in Bastrop County about 25 miles east of Austin, and about 400 were in emergency shelters, officials said.

Sonia may be back from the US today

New Delhi, September 06: Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who had undergone a surgery for an undisclosed ailment in the US, may be back in the country as early as tonight, reports claimed on Tuesday.

64-year-old Sonia has recovered well after the surgery on August 4. Her daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who is with her in the US, will accompany her back.

There is still no word on the reason for the surgery Sonia underwent and her treatment remains a well-guarded secret.

Manmohan Singh leaves on two-day visit to Bangladesh

New Delhi, September 06: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today left on a two-day visit to Bangladesh that is expected to put the bumpy bilateral ties in a new trajectory through signing of deals in a range of sectors including extradition of sentenced persons, connectivity, power, exchange of enclaves and border management.

Class 8 Student raped by Youth

New Delhi, September 06: A 20-year-old youth was arrested for confining and raping a teenager here, police said Monday.

Lalit Kumar, who hails from Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad city, fled with a 15-year-old girl after convincing her that he was in love with her, police said.

The girl, a class 8 student and resident of Kotla Mubarakpur in south Delhi, went with him to get married. However, Lalit Kumar confined her in a room in Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh and raped her, police said.

New Delhi, September 06: On a day when students across the nation were celebrating Teachers’ Day and giving flowers and cards to their teachers, an 18-year Class 10 student of a government school here slapped his teacher and threatened to kill her if she went to the police, police said Monday.

Vishnu, a resident of Ambedkar Nagar, threatened to kill Nisha Kashyap when she told him that she will lodge a police complaint against him, police said.

British diplomatic team reaches Tripoli

London, September 06: British Foreign Secretary William Hague has confirmed that Britain has sent a team on a diplomatic mission to Libyan capital Tripoli.

A diplomatic team, led by acting Special Representative Dominic Asquith, reached Tripoli Monday, Hague was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

Hague said the team included staff from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and the Department for International Development (DFID). It would join a small FCO-led advance party that was deployed to Tripoli last week.
