Family physicians needed in Arab world

Abu Dhabi, September 06: With its population going beyond 350 million, the Arab world seeks over 160,000 specialist family physicians as the available numbers are far less than actually needed.

Experts warn that efforts must be made to establish training programmes and produce skilled family physicians who can provide definitive care and preventative services to each member of the patient family regardless of sex, age, or type of problem, be it biological, behavioural or social.

Gaddafi taking refuge near hometown Sirte?

Benghazi, September 06: Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi is taking shelter in the outskirts of his hometown Sirte, a leader of the rebel-led National Transitional Council has claimed.

“We have found out that Gaddafi is now several kilometres southwards of Sirte. He is constantly moving,” Anis Sharif said.
He also said Gaddafi was probably looking for a corridor to escape to Sabha, one of the few Libyan cities controlled by forces loyal to him.
“Death, suicide or a trial for Gaddafi – is a matter of time. And he’s got little time left,” Sharif said.

9/11-like attack no longer possible: EU official

Brussels, September 06: Terror attacks similar to those that struck New York Sep 11, 2001, are “probably no longer possible”, European Union (EU) counter-terrorism coordinator Gilles de Kerchove has said.
“I think we can say today that an attack of the scale and the sophistication that we once had on September 11 probably is no longer possible,” de Kerchove was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

However, he stressed: “That doesn’t mean we are completely out of threat.”

Eight Iraqi soldiers killed in ambush

Baghdad, September 06: Gunmen ambushed and killed eight Iraqi soldiers as they were heading back to base after a midnight shift in the country’s west, security officials said Tuesday.

An army lieutenant was among those killed and another soldier was wounded in the late Monday night ambush, a military official and a policeman said.
The attack was a sobering reminder of how vulnerable Iraqi security forces remain as the U.S. military starts to leave.

Not able to conclude Teesta agreement: Mathai

Dhaka, September 6: India and Bangladesh were Tuesday unable to sign an agreement on sharing waters of the Teesta river, Indian Foreign Secretary Rajan Mathai said here.

“We were unable to carry out the proposed agreement on Teesta,” Mathai said, at a press conference at the end of the first day of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s two-day visit to Bangladesh.

Strong quake jolts west Indonesia; 3 killed

Jakarta, September 06: A powerful earthquake jolted western Indonesia early Tuesday, killing three people and sending panicked residents fleeing from homes, hotels and even a hospital.

The magnitude-6.6 quake hit about 1 a.m. (1800 GMT Monday), waking people in towns and villages across Sumatra island’s northern tip.
It was centered 60 miles (100 kilometers) southwest of the city of Medan and 62 miles (110 kilometers) beneath the earth’s crust, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was too far inland to generate a tsunami.

India, Bangladesh ink pacts on variety of issues

Dhaka, September 06: India and Bangladesh Tuesday cemented their ties by inking pacts on a variety of issues ranging from land disputes to tiger conservation, with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh saying that they have “agreed on a new architecture for our partnership”.

Hours after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrived on a two-day visit, the two countries signed framework agreement on cooperation for development and a protocol on demarcating their land boundary, a pact to facilitate overland transit to Nepal and on conserving the Royal Bengal Tiger — and the Sundarbans.

HC seeks report from ACB on illegal construction

Hyderabad, September 06: In an order of serious indictment of the approach of the GHMC officials, justice CV Nagarjuna Reddy of the AP High Court called for a detailed report from the ACB on the involvement and culpability of the GHMC officials in the illegal construction of a number of multi-storeyed buildings under its jurisdiction.

The judge was dealing with a batch of five cases, all dealing with pleas against threat of demolition or against the inaction of the authorities resulting in the construction of such buildings.

Woman jumps into Hussainsagar

Hyderabad, September 06: An employee of a city based recruitment firm jumped into the Hussainaagar lake and ended her life on Monday.
25yearold E Swapna of Balamrai was working as a recruitment manager at Sai People Solutions Private Limited at Khairatabad. She came to Tank Bund on Monday morning around 11 a.m. and after placing her handbag and mobile phone on the pavement opposite to the Marriot hotel, she jumped into the lake, police said.

Ex-BHPV employee’s house burgled

Hyderabad, September 06: Property worth Rs 15 lakh has been stolen from the residence of a retired Bharat Heavy Plates and Vessels (BHPV) employee at Neredmet on Sunday night.

The theft took place in Venkateswarulu’s house located in Defence Colony in Neredmet. Police said Venkateswarulu, who hails from Visakhapatnam, went to his native place on August 29 to attend a family event along with his family members.

39 kids discharged from Niloufer Hospital

Hyderabad, September 06: The 39 children aged between two and seven years who were admitted to Niloufer Hospital on Sunday were discharged on Monday at 2 p.m.

Niloufer Hospital superintendent Dr D Raghunath said, “All the children are fine as we have given them proper treatment. We have also given them medicines to use for the coming week and discharged them.”

Nightmarish ride for motorists till November

Hyderabad, September 06: Motorists will have to negotiate gaping potholes on most city stretches for the next two months, as no re-carpeting of roads can take place before November.

“Moderate to heavy rains are predicted during September and October and as such re-carpeting of damaged roads can only be taken up after monsoon is over,” mayor Banda Karthika Reddy and GHMC commissioner MT Krishna Babu have said.

Hyderabad collector needs counselling: HC

Hyderabad, Setember 06: Justice CV Nagarjuna Reddy on Monday pulled up Hyderabad district collector Natarajan Gulzar. The judge voiced the need to counsel him and called upon the state advocate general Sudhershan Reddy to undertake the same.

The judge was dealing with a contempt case filed by Brijlal Singh and others, who complained the collector had failed to implement orders of the court. The judge had earlier at the instance of petitioners directed the collector to effect changes in the Town Survey Land Registrar.

No question of rejoining Congress: Jagan

New Delhi, September 06: YSR Congress chief Jaganmohan Reddy Tuesday said he will never rejoin the Congress or align with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

However, he was willing to have a post-poll tie-up with any party in Andhra Pradesh except the BJP.

“Returning to Congress is over. We are fighting a battle head on in Andhra Pradesh. If we get the numbers, anybody other than BJP, is acceptable to us, who protects the interest of our state,” Jaganmohan, son of late chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said in an interview to CNN-IBN.

New Delhi, September 06: Amid reports that he may be arrested for his alleged nexus with the mining lobby, Jaganmohan Reddy, Tuesday, appeared concerned about the prospect while categorically asserting that he will not rejoin the Congress.

Amar Singh arrested, sent to jail

New Delhi, September 06: Rajya Sabha MP and former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh and two former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs were Tuesday arrested and sent to judicial custody for alleged involvement in the cash-for-votes scandal during the July 2008 trust vote in parliament.

Special Judge Sangita Dhingra Sehgal sent Amar Singh as well as Fagan Singh Kulaste and Mahavir Singh Bhagora to judicial custody till Sep 19.

Amar Singh, wearing a cream kurta pyjama, looked shocked when he heard the verdict.

He was soon whisked away by policemen.
