Mumbai,September 07:The Bombay High Court on Tuesday dismissed a petition filed by a Ganpati mandal in Thane seeking a poster depicting Chhatrapati Shivaji killing Afzal Khan.

The court said the Thane police commissioner is well equipped and has the expertise to decide whether the poster would lead to a law and order situation.

NYPD eyed over 250 mosques

New York, September 07: Recent documents show that the New York Police Department has been secretly watching hundreds of Muslims in mosques, restaurants and social groups in the so-called hunt for terrorists.

Hundreds of pages of internal police documents recently obtained by The Associated Press have revealed that police carried out an undercover effort that focused on over 250 mosques in New York and New Jersey and kept a close watch on hundreds of more places where Muslims frequented.

General strike will halt administration: Kodandaram

Hyderabad, September 07: Telangana Political Joint Action Committee chairman Prof M Kodandaram on Tuesday warned the state government of serious consequences if it arrests the employees who participate in the general strike beginning from September 13.

Talking to media persons, Kodandaram said that the general strike was aimed to bring down the administration in the state to a standstill. He requested people from all section of the society to participate in the general strike.

Communal violence continues in Adoni, curfew extended

Kurnool, September 07: At least a dozen people including policemen were injured in fresh incidents of violence in the Adoni town of Kurnool district on Tuesday.

The police fired three rounds in air and resorted to lathi-charge to quell a violent mob in Buddekal and Vaddegere villages. Stray cases of stone pelting were also reported from the Adoni Town where the clashes originally began on Tuesday during Ganesh immersion procession.

New Delhi, September 07: WikiLeaks in another US cable release described Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi’s comments on Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh as ” a man of integrity” and “hard to find” in politics.

She in conversation with US diplomat over nuclear deal said that Congress party “trusts him” because he was “straight forward and frank”.

In 2007 the cable had released that Shivshankar Menon, the then foreign secretary had signalled to the US diplomats that the Indo-US nuclear deal was important to Prime Minister Singh.

JUIV demands separate railway zone for Vizag

Visakhapatnam, September 07: Jai Uttarandhra Ikya Vedika convener J T Rama Rao announced that the vedika would stage `Chalo New Delhi’ agitation on Sept 25 demanding a separate Railway Zone headquartered at Visakhapatnam.

Releasing a poster in this connection at a programme here on Tuesday, Rama Rao said that despite several agitations and representations, the Central Government, especially the Ministry of Railways, has failed to respond to the demand for separate Visakhapatnam Railway Zone. ID cards sought for sex workers

Kolkata, September 07: Unorganized workers on Tuesday launched a three-day protest in West Bengal in support of eight demands, including recognition of and identity cards to sex workers.

Twenty-two unions involved in the sit-in are demanding minimum wage for all unorganized sector workers along with strict implementation of the Minimum Wages Act and cheap food for all.

“We want recognition and identity cards to all unorganized workers including sex workers,” said social activist Anuradha Talwar, the state committee member of Paschim Banga Khet Majoor Samity.

No drugs in hospitals for HIV patients

Mumbai, September 07: For a month government facilities have had to turn away patients who need the AntiRetroviral Therapy drugs to survive

Over 25,000 HIV patients in the city have been affected due to the lack of AntiRetroviral Therapy drugs at government hospitals such as JJ, Sion, KEM and Nair.

For the last one month, these patients, who get the drug free from the hospitals, have been turned away as the hospitals have run out of stock.

The Mumbai District AIDS Control Society (MDACS) is awaiting a consignment from the Delhi-based National AIDS Control Society (NACO).
