Police can act against gambling clubs: HC

Hyderabad, September 10: Justice Ramesh Ranganathan of the AP High Court on Friday disposed a writ petition declaring that if members of a club were playing only rummy then the question of interference by the police does not arise.

The power of the police, he said, however to inspect such clubs to ascertain the same is valid. He further made it clear that the police could take action in accordance with law, if it is found that the members were playing other card games which were not skill-based but based on chance and thus amounted to gambling.

Milan, September 10: Playboy Italian premier Silvio Berlusconi was given sexy lapdances by women dressed as NUNS at his infamous “bunga bunga” parties, it is claimed.

Berlusconi, 74, is said to have lavished gifts and money on dozens of women recruited by half-British dental hygienist Nicole Minetti, 25, and two other friends.

Dilip Kumar hospitalised

Mumbai, September 10: Legendary actor Dilip Kumar, who was hospitalised on Thursday following complications owing to urinary infection, is stable now. Hospital authorities have confirmed that the thespian is on the road to recovery and there is no reason to worry.
 
“His condition is stable and one need not worry about anything. He is in the ward,” an official at the Indraprastha Apollo Hospital said.

Kid charred to death

Hyderabad, September 10: A two and a half year old kid was charred to death as the hot water fell on him. The incident occurred at Gautamnagar Balanagar area. 2 and a half year old Veerashetty Bhanu Teja was playing in his house and reached the place where the water was being heated. The hot water fell on the kid consequently he sustained serious burn injuries. He died last night. Police has registered a case and investigations are on.

Arrangements for Ganesh procession completed-Mr. A.K Khan’s press conference

Hyderabad, September 10: Mr. A.K Khan, city police commissioner ,in a press conference informed that all the necessary arrangements have been made for the Ganesh procession to be taken out tomorrow in Hyderabad.

He said that on the routes of the procession, police forced is being deployed in sensitive areas to avoid any unpleasant incident. He said that no mischief would be tolerated.

Hike 2nd-class and sleeper fares: Finance ministry to Railways

New Delhi, September 10: The finance ministry has asked the Railways to increase fares for second-class and sleeper categories to help the state-run transporter raise resources and reduce its reliance on the government budget.

Cops gear up for G-Day

Hyderabad, September 10: Nearly 30,000 police personnel, including paramilitary forces, have been deployed for the conduct of the centralised procession-cum-immersion of Ganesh idols in Hussainsagar and other water bodies on Sunday. Over 50,000 idols in various forms and sizes are expected to be immersed on September 11, with 40,000 of them in Hussainsagar alone. The centralised procession from Balapur in Ranga Reddy will start at 9 am after the laddu auction.

Magnitude 6.4 quake strikes off of Vancouver in Canada

Vancouver, September 10: A magnitude-6.4 earthquake struck on Friday off the coast of British Columbia, the US Geological Survey said. The quake struck at a depth of 14.3 miles (23 kilometers) about 173 miles (279 kilometers) west of Vancouver, the USGS said. The quake was initially reported to have a magnitude of 6.7 but was later downgraded by the USGS.

The quake’s epicenter was just off the west coast of Vancouver Island, south of Port Hardy.

Modi refuses to attend PM’s NIC meet

New Delhi, September 10: In an open defiance against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi will not be attending the National Integration Council meet called by the Prime Minister on Saturday.

Sources say Modi is upset with the Centre for its refusal to take back the notification issued by Gujarat Governor Kamla Beniwal to independently appoint a Lokayukta for the state.

Modi and the BJP called the move unconstitutional, saying the governor should have consulted the Chief Minister.

Govt distributes compensation to blast victims

New Delhi, September 10: As Delhi government started distributing compensation to blast victims on Friday, several of the injured in the terror attack claimed that it was insufficient as they have been maimed for life.

ADM, Parliament Street, M T Kom said that compensation has already been distributed to a majority of those admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital authorities, where 33 patients were undergoing treatment.

Relatives of some of the injured were called by hospital authorities at midnight for handing over the compensation cheques, hospital sources said.
