2 auto drivers attempt suicide for T

Hyderabad, September 25: Dejected over the delay in formation of separate Telangana state a Muslim auto driver set himself on fire in an attempt to commit suicide. The incident occurred at Balanagar on city outskirts where 45 year old Mohammad Jafer Khan alias Ghouse poured kerosene over his body and set himself ablaze however the other auto drivers and locals shifted him to the hospital. Following the incident Telangana supporters reached Venkat Ram Reddy Nagar cross road and staged protest dharna. Seeing the protest and rasta roko by Telangana supporters heavy police force reached the spot.

Ahmadinejad urges change in US policies

Tehran, September 25: Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has called on US leaders to consider major policy changes in their regional and international affairs.

The Iranian president also emphasized that the current economic and political crises are the consequences of the policies adopted and enforced by capitalist countries led by the US.

President Ahmadinejad made the remarks in a meeting with a number of US scholars on the sidelines of the 66th annual session of the UN General Assembly in New York on Saturday, IRNA reported.

Statehood protests paralyse transport in Telangana

Hyderabad, September 25: Transport services remained paralyzed in Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh Sunday due to a rail blockade by activists, and strike by auto rickshaw and state-owned bus employees demanding separate statehood. Thousands of commuters were left stranded across the region and in many cities.

The rail blockade by Telangana activists continued for the second day Sunday, while the strike by employees of state-owned Road Transport Corporation (RTC) buses entered the seventh day.

Mamata by-poll contest: Polling begins in Bhowanipore

Kolkata, September 25: Polling began for the by-polls to Bhowanipur and Basirhar North Assembly constituencies in West Bengal amid tight security this morning.

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, who resigned from her Parliament membership to take over as West Bengal chief minister, is locked in a six-cornered contest in Bhowanipore.

But it will effectively be a contest between Banerjee and Nandini Mukherjee of the CPI(M) which was routed in the recent Assembly elections after over three decades of power in the state.

NASA satellite crashes to Earth

Washington, September 25: NASA’s defunct Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) has plunged to Earth but US space agency officials do not know where it landed.

UARS hit the Earth’s surface early on Saturday, more than eight hours later than expected.

NASA scientists thought that it fell largely over water and that no one was probably hurt by the falling debris.

‘US threatened Iran for 9/11 probe offer’

Tehran, September 25: Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad censures US moves to threaten Tehran for urging the establishment of an independent truth-finding commission to probe the 9/11 incidents, instead of welcoming the effort.

“Last year, we called for the formation of a fact-finding commission with regards to this incident, but the US government, rather than welcoming the suggestion, threatened Iran,” said President Ahmadinejad on Saturday in an interview with the Associated Press, quoted by Iran’s presidential website.

Passenger plane crashes in Kathmandu, 18 dead

Kathmandu, September 25: The passenger plane carrying 19 people that went missing in Nepal crashed in Kathmandu on Sunday, killing 18 people, reports said. One person who was alive has been admitted to a nearby hospital.

Reports said that 10 out of the 16 tourists were Indians.

Officials said that the plane carrying tourists to view Mount Everest had been out of contact with the control tower for more than an hour.

The Beechcraft plane belonging to Buddha Air was carrying 16 foreign tourists and three crew members. It lost contact on Sunday on approach to the Kathmandu airport.

T-employees to seize Secretariat on Sept 28

Hyderabad, September 25: The Telangana Employees Joint Action Committee chairman Swamy Goud announced that the pro-Telangana activists would seize the State Secretariat on the midnight of September 28th.

Talking to reporters here on Saturday, Swamy Goud said that the decision was taken to protest against the State Government’s decision to terminate the services of contract employees who participate in the general strike for Telangana. He said over three lakh employees would participate in the protest.

15.7 million US kids live in poverty

Washington, September 25: Between 2009 and 2010, a million more American children have joined the ranks of those living in poverty, bringing the number of poverty-stricken US children to 15.7 million, a new study finds.

Researchers at the Carsey Institute of University of New Hampshire reported on Friday that nearly one in every four children aged less than six now live in poverty.

These one million children are among the 2.6 million children that have fallen into poverty since 2007, when the US economy slipped into recession.

CM gives nod for more power cuts

Hyderabad, September 25: Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Saturday gave nod for more power cuts in the State. Besides agriculture and domestic sectors, the industries and other sectors too will face power cuts, if the general strike continues further.

In a review meeting, the Chief Minister said that in spite of all the constraints, they should make all efforts to see that power supply to crucial sectors are maintained and all efforts should be made to generate power and purchase it from wherever it is available to meet the shortfalls.

Stage set for Group-I exams from today

Hyderabad, September 25: Despite an almost total shutdown in the entire Telangana region due to the Sakala Janula Samme, the Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission has finalised its preparations to hold the Group-I (Mains) examination from September 25 to October 3.

The examination will be conducted in Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Warangal and Tirupati from 10 am to 1 pm. Elaborate security arrangements are being made at 12 centres in Hyderabad and also at Warangal centre for the examination.

TRS alleges discrimination in power-cuts

Hyderabad, September 25: The Telangana Rashtra Samithi on Saturday accused the Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy of discriminating the farmers of Telangana region in imposing power cuts that got necessitated due to the on-going Sakala Janula Samme or the general strike.

Talking to media persons at Telangana Bhavan, MLA T Harish Rao demanded that the State Government release a white paper on supply of power to Seemandhra and Telangana regions during the last three days. He alleged the power cuts were being imposed only for Telangana farmers and they have been left to their own fate.
