US credit crisis: Sensex crashes over 500 points

Mumbai, august 08: Indian stocks plunged deep into the red this morning as the Sensex lost more than 500 points within minutes of the market opening on concerns over the US losing its top-notch credit rating due to mounting debts.

The 30-share benchmark index dropped within minutes of opening to 16,793.07 points, its lowest level since June, 2010, registering a fall of 512 points from its previous close.

The NSE’s Nifty was also down by 131 points at 5,079.65 points at 0930 hours, after hitting a low of 5,060.05 points earlier in the morning.

Longer fast for residents of Burj Khalifa

Dubai, August 8: The Ramadan fast is little bit longer for the Muslims residing on top of the world’s tallest tower, Burj Khalifa.

The greater the distance is from the ground, the longer the duration of the fasting, given the fact that people on top of the tower witness the sunrise early and the sunset later than those on the ground floor.

The Islamic Affairs Department of Dubai has told the residents of the 160-storeyed building that they need to observe varied timings for beginning and ending their month-long fasts.

Subramanian Swamy’s Delhi house attacked

New Delhi, August 08: A small group of unidentified people on Sunday barged into the house of Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy in Nizammuddin East and went on rampaging his garden.

Swamy alleged it to be handiwork of “rowdy Congress persons”.

The Delhi Police registered a case of criminal trespass and creating mischief.

The police said no major damage was done and some flower pots and lanterns in the garden were damaged. Swamy is in Texas and the incident was reported by his granddaughter.

Hyderabad, August 8: Opposing the proposal of honouring Jagdish Arya with an award declaring his act of hurling bomb at Huzoor Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan, as heroic, the respectable citizens of the city, Mr. Ghulam Mohammad, Mr. Jawwad Asghar Naqvi, Mr. Syed Nasir Hyder Jaffery, Mr. Murtaza Ali, Mr. Mohammad Azam, Mr. Syed Sarfaraz Ali Jafferi, Mr. Syed Ashfaq Husain, Mr. Syed Mehdi Hyder Jafferi have appealed President, Ms Pratibha Patil to reject any such proposal, as any such step will hurt Muslim sentiments.

Activists say Syrian troops kill at least 52

Beirut, August 8: Syrian forces intensified their crackdown on an eastern city Sunday as they try to keep the anti-government uprising from escalating during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. The assault and similar operations in at least two other towns killed at least 52 people, according to human rights groups, and the toll looked likely to rise.

New Zealander sucked into plane engine, killed

Wellington, August 8: 51-year-old engineer working at an airplane testing facility has been sucked into an engine and killed.
Domestic carrier Air New Zealand confirmed the man was performing routine maintenance on a Lockheed C-130 Hercules airplane engine just after 8 a.m. Monday at the Woodbourne air field in Blenheim when he was sucked into the engine.
An Air New Zealand spokeswoman said the engine was sitting on a stand without propellors attached and was not affixed to a plane at the time of the accident.

Parliament adjourned over CAG report

New Delhi, August 08: Both houses of parliament were adjourned Monday with the opposition demanding a discussion over the Comptroller and Auditor General’s (CAG) report on the Commonwealth Games that indicted Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

As soon as the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha met at 11 a.m., the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies demanded cancellation of question hour and discussion on the CAG report.

Both houses were adjourned till 12 noon amid pandemonium.

The CAG report was tabled in parliament Friday.

Obama discusses helicopter crash with commanders

Washington, August 8: President Barack Obama spent part of Sunday talking to top American commanders about the U.S. troops lost when a helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan.
He also spoke with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, according to the Afghan embassy in Washington.

The White House said Obama placed calls to the commanders on Sunday to express his condolences for those who died. In the calls, the president reaffirmed the support of the American people for service members and their families.

Three Crushed to Death by Train

Lucknow, August 08: Three members of a family, including a teenaged boy, were mowed to death by an express train while trying to cross a railway track in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao district, an official said Monday.

The victims aged between 14 and 40 years were hit by the Kanpur-Pratapgarh Express train at the railway track near Jaitpur village Sunday.

Missing Man’s Beheaded Body Found

New Delhi, August 08: The beheaded body of a 26-year-old man has been found in Haryana on Sunday August 7.

The man by the name Srikant Singh who was an insurance advisor for a healthcare company was reportedly missing since July 29. He was last seen before he left his home at Moti Bagh in South Delhi.

A senior police officer said that a kidnapping case was registered after 24 hours of his missing complaint.

On Saturday August 6 the police of Haryana’s district informed the Delhi police of a beheaded body found wrapped in a bed sheet.

Transformer burst at Bilalnagar, two injured

Hyderabad, august 8: An electric transformer burst with a sudden huge blast at Bilalnagar, Kalapathar area resulting serious burn injuries of two youth, Mohammad Nisar (22) and Mohammad Azharuddin. The blaze also damaged an adjacent house and a medical hall. The victims were admitted at Medicare hospital.

Locals told that the authorities of electric department were informed when sparks were seen coming from the transformer but the officials didn’t pay heed to it as a result the transformer burst and two youth suffered injuries.

Amman, August 08: Syrian tanks stormed a city in the east of the country on Sunday, crushing makeshift barricades, opening fire and seizing the central square, residents said; in a fresh crackdown that activists said killed dozens of civilians.

Separatists, Integrationists clash in Vijayawada

Vijayawada, August 8: An attempt by advocates of state’s bifurcation to hold a meeting at the Freedom Fighters Association Hall here on Sunday led to a clash with students supporting state’s unity for over an hour with both the groups hurling chairs on each other.
