FIR against Ashok Chavan, 14 others in land scam

Yavatmal, August 29: City police on Sunday lodged an FIR against 16 persons, including former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, state Education minister Rajendra Darda, and MP Vijay Darda, besides other government officials, in connection with an alleged land scam.

The offence has been registered on last week’s directive of Judicial Magistrate First Class, Yavatmal KS Kulkarni, based on a petition filed by one Digambar Pajgade, police said.

Take oath to not vote for money: Thackeray

Mumbai, August 29: Mumbai: Appealing to people to brace up for the unfinished battle against corruption, Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray has said electorates should take a pledge to not exercise their franchise in lieu of money.

In a statement issued here Sunday night, Thackeray said the practice of bribing voters adds to corruption and should be nipped in the bud.

“Only then corruption can be rooted out. If elected representatives win polls by bribing voters, what will Lokpal do,” he said.

Gaddafi’s female bodyguards claim rape

Tripolie, August 29: FIVE women who were part of Muammar Gaddafi’s elite team of female bodyguards have reportedly claimed they were raped by the deposed Libyan leader.

According to the Sunday Times of Malta, the former bodyguards told a Benghazi-based psychologist they were raped and abused by Gaddafi and his sons, before being tossed aside once the men became “bored” with them.

constable acquitted of rape charge

Mumbai, August 29: Nearly six years after a police constable was arrested for the rape of a 14-year-old girl at Sahar, the accused, Chandrakant Pawar, was acquitted of the grave charge by the Bombay high court. However, Pawar has been held him guilty of attempting to rape the victim and slapped with a fine of Rs 10,000.

Sentencing Pawar to 10 years in prison, Justice J H Bhatia calculated the benefit of remissions (prison day credits) and ordered that he be released as he has already spent five years behind bars.

Gulf Air Flight skids off runway at Kochi Airport

Kochi, August 29: At least seven passengers were injured when a Gulf Air Flight from Bahrain with 137 passengers on board, deviated from the runway just before landing at the nearby International airport early Monday.

The runway has been closed for bigger aircraft following the incident, airport director ACK Nair told . One passenger who was injured has been admitted to a nearby hospital and the others were discharged after first aid. It would take another 10 hours for the airport to be fully operational. New Delhi, August 29: Activist Swami Agnivesh, who was a key member of Team Anna till the ninth day of Anna Hazare’s 12-day fast, has courted controversy with video clippings appearing on social network sites allegedly showing him criticising the anti-corruption campaign. Agnivesh has dismissed the footage as doctored.

Suspected Explosives Found Near Team Hotel

New Delhi, August 29: A suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was found in a shopping complex, just 300 metres away from the Indian team’s hotel in Kent and on the route that Dhoni & Co took for their practice match against Kent. The match itself went ahead after a prolonged rain delay.
