CM urges PM to delete controversial clause

Hyderabad, August 10: With protests in Telangana looming large, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy Tuesday urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take immediate steps for deletion of a clause from the 1975 presidential order that treats this state capital as a free zone for police recruitment.

As Telangana is set to observe shutdown Wednesday on a call given by Telangana students’ groups, Reddy spoke to Manmohan Singh over phone and emphasised the need to delete the clause.

AP parties welcome move on Presidential order

Hyderabad, August 10: Political parties of all hues, including the ruling Congress, Telugu Desam Party and Bharatiya Janata Party in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday welcomed the Centre’s decision to repeal a clause in a 1975 Presidential Order for the benefit of Telangana, while the Telangana Rashtra Samithi and student groups said they would continue their campaign till the orders are issued officially.

Shift riot cases out of Gujarat: Congress

New Delhi, August 10: Taking a cue from the suspension of rebel police officer Sanjeev Bhatt, the Congress Tuesday said that justice could not be done to Gujarat riot victims until all riot-related cases are shifted out of the state.

Talking to reporters in the national capital, Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari accused the Gujarat government of manipulation.

“All riot-related cases should be transferred out of the state (Gujarat) because only cases out of the influence of Gujarat government have fructified in results,” Tewari said.

Jodhpur, August 10: Bollywood actor Salman Khan was Tuesday directed by a court in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur city to present himself before it Sep 20 in connection with his appeal against his conviction in a poaching case.

Salman was sentenced to one-year imprisonment for killing a blackbuck and a chinkara (gazelle) in Bhawad village near Jodhpur Sep 26, 1998. The sentence was handed down by a Jodhpur court Feb 17, 2006.

Pak wants new relationship with India: Hina

Islamabad, August 10: Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar Tuesday told parliament that Pakistan wants to build a new era of cooperation with India.

Khar travelled to New Delhi last month and held talks with her Indian counterpart S.M. Krishna, which were described as cordial.

“We want to build trust, rather than to evaporate trust. We want to build new foundation of relationship with India,” she said in the National Assembly, Xinhua reported.

Khar said the main purpose of her visit to India was to have an uninterrupted dialogue with New Delhi.

Questioning of ex-officials on Gujarat riots put off

Gandhinagar, August 10: The Nanavaty-Mehta judicial inquiry commission, probing the 2002 Godhra communal carnage and the statewide riots that followed it, Tuesday adjourned the questioning of three former Gujarat government officers.

Student can inspect evaluated answer sheet: Apex court

New Delhi, August 10: The Supreme Court Tuesday held that students have the right to inspect and photocopy their answer sheets after their evaluation under the Right To Information (RTI) Act.

The apex court bench of Justice R.V. Raveendran and Justice A.K. Patnaik allowed the disclosure of the answer sheets of the examination conducted by boards, universities, institutions and public service commissions, when it upheld the Calcutta High Court judgment that permitted the students to inspect their answer sheets.

London, August 10: Teenagers who regularly log in to their Facebook page and other social media will get lower grades at school, according to a US study. They are also likely to have behavioural problems and narcissistic tendencies from spending too much time logged on to the site.

According to the research popular social network sites, like Facebook, are having a negative effect on teenagers as they grow up.

Psychology professor Larry Rosen said researchers watched as students spent 15 minutes studying something that was important to them.

London riots: Over 100 policemen, five service dogs injured

London, August 10: The riots in London have injured 111 police officers and five service dogs, Scotland Yard said in a statement Tuesday.

Many officers remain hospitalised with broken bones, head injuries, serious cuts and eye injuries from broken glass, the Scotland Yard stated.

Rioters have been throwing bricks, bottles, sticks and other objects at police who are trying to keep order in the streets of London, as looting and fires have been witnessed since Saturday in the capital city of Britain.

IPS officer Sanjeev Bhatt to challenge suspension

Gandhinagar, August 10: Senior IPS officer Sanjeev Bhatt on Tuesday said he would challenge his suspension by the Gujarat government, claiming that the action was prompted by his petition in the Supreme Court on the 2002 post-Godhra riots.

The Narendra Modi government, however, contested Mr. Bhatt’s claim saying it was not the case and that the suspension was prompted by his acts of indiscipline.

ATS arrests one in 13/7 blasts case

Mumbai, Augsut 10: Maharashtra ATS has arrested one person who had allegedly stolen a two-wheeler used by terrorists to plant a bomb in Mumbai’s Zaveri Bazar on July 13 when serial blasts left 27 people dead in the city.

Sources in the Union Home Ministry said the thief had been detained on Sunday and was placed under arrest late on Monday night.

The development was seen as no breakthrough by the ATS team of Maharashtra which was probing the triple blasts that took place in Zaveri Bazar, Opera House and Dadar bus stand on July 13 last.

Woman kills daughter, self in Depression

New Delhi, August 10: A 34-year-old woman, married for nine years and with two children, has rattled the upscale Surajmal Vihar colony in east Delhi by allegedly killing her six-year-old daughter, Vrinda Pokhriyal, before hanging herself from the fan.

Police identified her as Sangeeta, a postgraduate in mathematics. The gory incident was discovered by her own son, seven-and-a-half-years-old Chaitanya, when he woke up on Tuesday morning. He was sleeping in his grandfather’s room when the incident took place.

Washington, August 10: Nearly a third of the world’s population lives in countries where it is becoming more difficult to freely practice religion, a private US research group reported on Tuesday.

The Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion and Public Life said government restrictions and public hostility involving religion grew in some of the most populous countries from mid-2006 to mid-2009.

Mumbai, August 10: Anna Hazare on Tuesday alleged he is being targeted by the Government, claiming his records in the Army were being checked and people sent to his village in Maharashtra to check on his organisation.

Petition against word ‘Sindh’ in National Anthem

Mumbai, August 10: Ahead of Independence Day, a retired professor has approached the Bombay High Court challenging the use of the word ‘Sindh’ in the national anthem and has sought to replace it with the word ‘Sindhu’.

According to the petitioner, Shreekanth Malushte, the word ‘Sindh’ in the anthem was replaced by the word ‘Sindhu’ in January 1950 by the government.

“However, the national anthem continues to be sung and broadcast in a wrong manner by using incorrect words,” the petition states.

New Zealand Muslims urged to drop Niqab

Cairo, August 10: A prominent Britain-based Muslim scholar has urged New Zealand Muslim women to take off face-veil to avoid harassment and debates that have erupted recently in the country.

“Covering the face, according to the Qur’an, is not mandatory,” Muhammad Tahir ul-Qadri, a prominent Muslim scholar, told the Sunday Star-Times newspaper.

The influential Pakistani scholar, on a visit to New Zealand, was commenting on the latest debates that has recently surrounded Muslim face-veil.

Four-tier security net for SI recruitment test

Hyderabad, August 09: Revealing that a four tier security net would be in place, Hyderabad Range Deputy Inspector General Nagireddy on Tuesday warned of serious action against any person who attempts to disrupt the recruitment examinations for filling up the vacant Sub-Inspectors posts.

The recruitment tests will be held on August 13 and 14.

Talking to media persons after reviewing security arrangements for conducting the examination at BHEL area, Mr Nagireddy said that 4,000 police persons would be deputed to maintain security arrangements at the examination centres in the city.
