Makkah, August 29: A Saudi man and his wife have been living in their own car for more than three years because they are simply too poor to own a house.

They said social welfare authorities have not given much attention to their problem.

The husband, Turki Al-Amri who is in his 50s, told Arab News he was under immense pressure as he had to deal with both a lack of regular income and his wife’s mental illness. He said they could not provide proper nutrition to their newborn baby boy.

Khatm Al-Qur’an prayer in Makkah

Makkah, August 29: More than 2 million faithful, including hundreds of thousands of pilgrims, attended Khatm Al-Qur’an prayer (conclusion of the Holy Qur’an) at the Grand Mosque here Sunday. Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais, imam and khateeb of the mosque, led the prayers.

The mosque was overcrowded with worshippers since the early hours of the day as most of them wanted to take part in the prayers to mark the end of the recitation of the holy book during taraweeh and qiyamullail prayers at the mosque.

Mataf expansion to accommodate 130,000 pilgrims

Jeddah, August 29: Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah was given a presentation on the new project to expand the mataf (the circumambulation areas around the Holy Kaaba).

The project, which will be completed in three years, will enable 130,000 pilgrims to perform tawaf (circumambulation) at a time.

Higher Education Minister Khaled Al-Anqari presented the project to the king during a reception at Al-Safa Palace in Makkah on Sunday in presence of Bakri Assas, president Umm Al-Qura University in Makkah, and a team of engineers who designed the project.

Drama “Eid Mubarak” to be telecast on Doordarshan

Hyderabad, August 29: An interesting drama on the topic of hustle and bustle of Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr preparation written by Mr. Mateen Siddiqui will be telecast by Doordarshan Kendra Hyderabad on Monday August 29 at 6 pm and 12 midnight.

Battered roads promised to be repaired within a week

Hyderabad, August 29: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has promised to repair battered road within a week, due to which vehicle riders are facing lot of difficulties, especially because of rainy season. This has been announced in a joint press conference held by Mayor greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Mrs. Banda Kartika Reddy and commissioner Mr. M T Krishna Babu. A total of 3879 potholes have been identified by the engineering wing where attention needs to be paid. Commissioner said that he is aware of the hardships faced by the vehicle riders due to potholed roads.

We made no mistakes: Salman Khurshid

New Delhi, August 29: Law Minister Salman Khurshid, a key negotiator with Team Anna, on Sunday said there may have been “errors of judgement” in the government’s handling of Hazare’s fast but there were no mistakes.

Hyderabad, August 29: Swadeshi Jagaran March of A.P. convened a meeting at Sundaryya Vigyan Kendram under the caption “Indian Black Money Abroad” yesterday. Speaking on this occasion, Mr. G. Guru Murthy, All India Associate Co-ordinator of Swadeshi Jagaran March told that till 1967 the black money in the foreign banks was only 10% but it rose to 49% in 1978. The reason for the Indians to deposit black money in foreign banks is the higher taxation rate in India. Quoting a report, he said that 20 lakh crore rupees of black money have been deposited in foreign banks by the Indians.

Property dispute led to suicide

Hyderabad, August 29 (Siasat News): A man, who was under tremendous mental pressure over some property dispute, took the extreme step of ending his life. This incident occurred in the jurisdiction Dandigal police station.

Police sources said that K U Babu, 42, resident of Dayanand Nagar, Suraram, hanged himself in his house. The deceased was a painter by profession and having disputes with his brother over the ancestral property, which turned severe last week.

Hyderabad, August 30: Increasing number of Muslim customers at Rahen centres and their conversation with Rahen centres owners is quite thought provoking. High Court stumps Yeddyurappa; bail plea rejected

Bangalore, August 29: Former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa’s anticipatory bail has been rejected on Monday. The bail was rejected by the Karnataka High Court on the alleged land scam case.

He was expected to appear in front of the Lokayukta special court in the land denotification case. He has been named in five separate cases, with an FIR filed in his name in one of them.

Tehran, August 29: The Supreme Leader of Islamic Republic of Iran Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei pardoned 1218 prisoners.

Iranian Supreme Leader has agreed with Iran’s Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani’s letter on granting clemency to 1218 qualified prisoners convicted of security related crimes on the advent of Eid al-Fitr.

At the end of Ramadan, the Islamic world will celebrate the Eid al-Fitr, the Feast of the Breaking of the Fast.

Man kills four, commits suicide

Jaipur, August 29: A man on Sunday allegedly shot dead four persons, including his estranged wife, and injured another over a family dispute before committing suicide in Tonk district, a senior police official said.

Pradeep killed his wife, brother-in-law, his spouse and another woman, and critically injured father-in-law at their house in the area, Additional SP Prem Singh Chandrawat said.

Pradeep and his wife had filed for divorce in a court, and he used to believe that his brother-in-law was behind the dispute, Chandrawat said.

New Delhi, August 29: Our legislators may have come under attack from supporters of Anna Hazare for their level of competence to frame laws, but the truth is that more than 80% of MPs in Lok Sabha are graduates while over 30% possess post-graduate and doctoral degrees.

Lodha community protests over Muslims’ effort to rehabilitate mosque

Hyderabad, August 29: Local Muslims went to Alijah pur near Golconda area to rehabilitate a mosque. Lodha community miscreants created a problem by obstructing the Muslim youths. They pelted stones on the Muslim youths. On receipt of information, Mr. Abdus Sattar Mujahid, Mr. Mujahid Hashmi, Mr. Nayeemullah Shareef and other Muslim leaders reached the spot. Police posted a picket there to maintain peace. It is said that illicit liquor is prepared in that area and a person from Lodha community is claiming ownership of the Mosque property.

Bomb blast targets US convoy in Iraq

Baghdad, August 29: A roadside bomb has targeted a US military convoy in the southern Iraqi city of Diwaniyah, police officials say.

Iraq’s police said the explosion occurred in the Algeria district of the city on Sunday, according to the Qatar state news agency QNA.

Iraqi security forces were deployed to the blast area. No casualties have been reported.

Meanwhile, a terrorist attack on the largest Sunni Mosque in the capital Baghdad on Sunday killed 29 worshippers, leaving 38 others severely wounded.

I can’t help Rajiv killers, says Jayalalithaa

Chennai, August 29: Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa said on Monday that she does not have the power to commute the death sentence of the three people who are to be hanged on September 9 for their roles in the assassination of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.

“As chief minister, I don’t have the powers to commute the death sentence after the president has rejected the mercy plea of the three people – Santhan, Murugan and G Perarivalan alias Arivu,” said Jayalalithaa in a statement to the state assembly.

Suicide attack kills at least 29 at Baghdad mosque

Baghdad, August 29: A suicide bomber blew himself up inside Baghdad’s largest Sunni mosque on Sunday night, killing 29 people during prayers, a shocking strike on a place of worship similar to the one that brought Iraq to the brink of civil war five years ago.

Iraqi security officials said Parliament lawmaker Khalid al-Fahdawi, a Sunni, was among the dead in the 9:40 pm attack.
