Ex-Constable Abdul Quadeer- A victim prisoner

Hyderabad, August 15: For the past 21 years ex-constable Abdul Quadeer is suffering in prison. He was imprisoned on 12th December 1990. Although, he has completed 14 years of imprisonment, he has not yet been released.

For the past three years, he is not being released even on the occasion of important Muslim festivals like Ramzan and Bakrid on parole. Why is it so?

No Kashmir, Pak in I-Day speech

New Delhi, August 15: There was no mention of Kashmir and the northeast – the troubled regions of India – or Pakistan in Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s Independence Day speech Monday.

This is the first time in his seven Independence Day speeches since 2004 that Manmohan Singh didn’t speak about the disturbances in Jammu and Kashmir and northeastern states.

Last year, when Jammu and Kashmir was in the midst of a civil unrest, Manmohan Singh appealed for peace and invited all political groups from the state for talks.

Almost a similar appeal was made to groups in the northeast.

‘Iran to generate 2.5mn new jobs’

Tehran, August 15: President Ahmadinejad made the remarks during the 45th meeting of Iran’s High Council of Employment on Sunday, where he also introduced the new Minister of Cooperatives, Labor and Social Security Abdolreza Sheikholeslami, the official website of the president reported.

The Iranian president stated at the meeting that the Islamic Republic has the essential human and financial resources to achieve this goal, expressing his optimism that the country’s unemployment rate would ultimately drop to zero in a foreseeable future.

22 Chinese women rescued from forced prostitution

Beijing, August 15: At least 22 women, who were forced to become sex workers in a Chinese city, have been rescued by police, officials said Sunday.

Six suspects have been arrested for forcing the women into prostitution, Xinhua reported.

The women were lured by job promises to Xiamen in southeast Fujian province, where the suspects forced them to work as sex workers at an entertainment parlour, police said.

Taliban commander held in Islamabad

Islamabad, August 15: Bakht Farzandi, a key Pakistani Taliban commander, was arrested here Sunday, a media report said.

Scholar regrets fuss over burqa
