Saudis to get 10-day Eid holidays

Riyadh, August 15: Saudi Arabia’s civil servants will be given a 10-day holiday to mark the end of the fasting month of Ramadan and the start of Eid Al Fitr, newspapers in the Gulf Kingdom reported on Monday.

The holiday will begin on Ramadan 25 and will benefit all employees at government and semi official establishments across the country.

The ministry of civil service has already set the holiday for the public sector but no announcement has yet been made for the private sector, the papers said.

Ramadan, which began on August 1, is expected to end on August 29 or 30.

Arab woman caught, sex client was undercover cop

Dubai, August 15: An Emirati woman on trial at the Dubai Court of First Instance, first confessed to working as a prostitue but later denied the accusations when the presiding judge asked her to confirm whether she pleaded innocent or guilty.

During Prosecution questioning, 25-year-old AT had admitted to posting naked picture of herself on the internet and charging clients between Dh1,500 and Dh3,000, ‘Gulf News’ reported.

On receiving an alert that an Arab woman who could converse in Arabic and English was working as a prostitute, Dubai Police set up a sting operation to trap her.

‘Baba’ arrested on rape charges

Chandigarh, August 15: A ‘baba’ was arrested for allegedly raping a local singer, police said here today.

“‘Baba’ Rajesh Kumar alias Rana was arrested yesterday after a local singer lodged a complaint with Kapurthala police that he raped her under the pretext of marrying her,” City SHO Amrik Singh Chahal said.

He was produced before a Judicial magistrate today who remanded him to 14-day judicial custody.

A team of researchers from Barcelona University and the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid in Spain have found that people with symmetrical faces are more self-sufficient and they are also less likely to co-operate.

According to the study, people blessed with more symmetrical facial features, which are considered more pretty, are less likely to co-operate and more likely to selfishly focus on their own interests.

More than 500 gays and lesbians danced in tune with music, chanted slogans and marched around Narayanghat, a town about 160 kilometers south of the capital city Kathmandu,coinciding with Nepalese cow festival, popularly known as Gaijatra.

I-T Dept likely to levy Rs 30K-cr penalty on Hasan Ali Khan

New Delhi, August 15: The income-tax department is likely to levy a penalty of Rs 30,000 crore on alleged money launderer and tax-evader Hasan Ali Khan, who was released on bail by the Bombay High Court last week, I-T sources said. Khan, a Pune-based stud-farm owner, had been in custody of the Enforcement Directorate. The agency has been probing charges that Khan had stashed away $8 billion into Swiss bank accounts. The I-T department has been waiting for Khan’s release from the ED’s custody to summon him for hearing.

‘Bomb blast kills 14 in north Yemen’

Sanaa, August 15: The blast, caused by a suspected al-Qaeda car bomb, took place late on Sunday when anti-regime Houthi leaders were having a meeting in a complex at Matamma, a district in Yemen’s northeastern Al-Jouf Province, Xinhua reported.

“At least 14 Shia Houthi rebels were killed and about five others were severely injured when a suspected al-Qaeda car bomb hit the main gate of the Shia-seized government compound in Matamma district in the northeast province of Al-Jouf,” a Yemeni Interior Ministry official claimed on condition of anonymity.

Hunger strikes will not solve corruption problems: PM

New Delhi, August 15: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday said the government wants a “strong Lokpal” and those who don’t agree with some aspects of a proposed legislation “should not resort to hunger strikes”.

“We want a strong Lokpal to prevent corruption in high places. We have recently introduced a bill in Parliament to achieve this,” said Singh in his address to the nation on 65th Independence Day.

“Now only Parliament can decide what type of Lokpal legislation should be enacted,” he said from the ramparts of Red Fort.

Indian Navy captures hijacked ship off Mumbai

New Delhi, August 15: In yet another success in its anti-piracy operations, the Indian Navy successfully captured a hijacked ship, MV Nafis-1, off the Mumbai coast on Monday.

As per reports, the Indian Navy had kept the Iranian flagged Nafis under surveillance since August 12. During checking, two AK-47 rifles and one pistol was recovered from the ship.

Nafis is said to have been missing for more than five months with Sharjah being its last known port of call, from where it sailed to an undisclosed location.
