Online addiction turning youth as lonely as elderly

London, August 16: Youngsters are turning ‘skin hungry’ as networking online leaves them feeling as lonely as the elderly, a study has found.

Having an average of 243 Facebook friends, teenagers are spending so much time on the internet that they have little time to move out with friends, Daily Mail reported the study as stating.

Commissioned by Yours magazine, the study included people aged between 18 and 80, it found that over a third of people spend more time chatting online than going out with friends.

UAE president to get Islamic award

Dubai, August 16: UAE President Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan will be honoured Tuesday with Islamic Personality of the Dubai International Holy Quran Award (DIHQA) in its 15th edition.

The award will be given in recognition of his huge efforts in service of Islam, Muslims and humanity worldwide.

Ibrahim Mohammed Bumelha, chairman of the organising committee of DIHQA, disclosed it Sunday, adding that all were pleased with the election of the UAE President as the Islamic Personality because he deserved the title.

‘I am helpless, alone and young’

Hyderabad, August 16: Facing the heat over the probe into his alleged illegal wealth, Jaganmohan Reddy hit out at the Congress and said that his father’s legacy is being tarnished and that the Centre has unleashed a witch hunt against him.

Bid to smuggle heroin from Pakistan to China foiled

Islamabad, August 16:Chinese authorities have foiled an attempt to smuggle around 560 kg of heroin through the Pakistan border into China, a media report said.

The heroin was found concealed in rice containers at the Sost land port in Gilgit-Baltistan, and China reported the matter to the Pakistani customs department, sources told Dawn News.

The report, however, did not mention when the incident took place.

MPs prevented from hoisting flag at Telangana memorial

Hyderabad, August 15:Police prevented Congress MPs belonging to Andhra Pradesh’s Telangana region from hoisting the national flag at the Telangana martyrs’ memorial here on Independence Day Monday.

The MPs, state legislators and other leaders paid tributes at Gun Park, in front of the Andhra Pradesh state assembly building, to people who laid down their lives for a separate Telangana state. They wanted to unfurl the national flag and also the flag of Telangana, but police prevented them from doing so.

Police say ‘no’ to Hazare fast

New Delhi, August 15:Gandhian Anna Hazare and his supporters have been denied permission to go on fast here Tuesday as they had not agreed to certain conditions, Delhi Police said Monday.

Joint Commissioner of Police Sudhir Yadav said that if Team Hazare went ahead with its protest at the JP Park in the heart of the city, it would be deemed an unlawful gathering.

“We have denied (them permission),” Yadav told reporters, only hours after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh asked people not to resort to hunger strikes in their campaign against corruption.
