Chiranjeevi extends support to Anna Hazare

Hyderabad, August 16: Tirupati MLA K Chiranjeevi and pro-Telangana leader M Kodandaram on Monday extended their support to anti-graft crusader Anna Hazare’s fight against corruption.

“Whoever fights against corruption should be commended,” said Chiranjeevi, who is set to join the Congress on August 20.

Though it might practically not be possible to bring the Prime Minister and judiciary under the ambit of Lokpal, there is need for a wider discussion on the issue, he said, after unfurling the tri-colour at his blood bank on Monday.

Doctor rapes patient

New Delhi, August 16: A 20-year old woman was allegedly raped by a doctor in the Nazafgarh area of southwest Delhi on Sunday morning. The accused, identified as Devraj Verma, has been arrested.

“The woman lodged a complaint saying that she had been sedated and raped when she had gone for treatment. Medical examination confirmed the rape and a case was registered under the appropriate sections of the IPC. The accused was nabbed immediately,” said a senior police officer.

60 killed as wave of violence rolls across Iraq

Rains claim 21 lives in WB

Kolkata, August 16: Rains have claimed 21 lives in a week in West Bengal. Around 25 lakh people have been affected by incessant rains whose ravages spilled over to 14 districts against the nine announced earlier by the State government.

Five persons died of snake bites, 11 in wall and roof collapse, three drowned and one was electrocuted.

Anna Hazare arrested by Delhi Police ahead of fast

New Delhi, August 16: Anna Hazare has courted arrrest after being detained by Delhi Police at his residence in Mayur Vihar ahead of his indefinite fast.

According to reports coming in, senior officers of Delhi Police reached Anna Hazare’s flat early in the morning and informed him that he could not leave his home.

Anna Hazare and two of his team members including Arvind Kejriwal courted arrest after Delhi Police prevented them from stepping out.

Pornification of women in media far exceeds that of men

New York, August 16: A study has found that there is a huge increase in the number of intensely sexualised images of women in the media.

The study by the University of Buffalo revealed that images of women on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine were 89 per cent more likely to be sexualised and even ‘pornified’ in the 2000s than in the 1960s.

After analysing more than 1,000 images of men and women on Rolling Stone covers over the course of 43 years, the authors concluded that though images of both men and women have become more sexual, sexualised images are more frequent with women.

Accidental vomiting does not end fast

Dubai, August 16: The unintentional inhalation of fumes or other health-related incidents such as accidental vomiting or bleeding in the throat or mouth do not result in ending the fast during Ramadan.

The fast continues to be valid and the person facing such a situation does not need to make up for the day of fasting, according to an edict (Fatwa) by the Dubai Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department (IACAD).
