Hasan Ali’s wife obstructing probe, ED tells HC

Mumbai, August 23: Alleging that Hasan Ali Khan’s wife was “obstructing” the probe and trying to “intimidate” investigators, the Enforcement Directorate on Tuesday urged the Bombay High Court to reject her petition seeking quashing of proceedings under the anti-money laundering law.

The ED also said the preliminary enquiry initiated against Rheema Khan, the wife of jailed Pune stud farm owner accused in money laundering cases, has revealed that she too had acquired properties worth Rs 16 crore through dubious cash transactions.

Vietnam jails 8th democracy activist in a month

Vietnam, August 23: A judge says a Vietnamese pro-democracy activist has been sentenced to four years in prison for calling for an end to Communist rule. Lu Van Bay is the eighth dissident to be jailed in less than a month as part of a major crackdown.

Presiding Judge Do Minh Hung says Bay was convicted of spreading propaganda against the state at Monday’s half-day trial in the southern province of Kien Giang. He was also given three years of house arrest after serving out his sentence.

China starts bullet train safety inspections

Shangai, August 23: China is starting inspections of all its showcase bullet train lines following a crash last month that killed 40 people, as authorities work to determine who is ultimately responsible for the disaster.

The State Administration of Work Safety will present a report on the July 23 crash to China’s top leaders in September, the agency’s spokesman Huang Yi said in comments Tuesday on its website.
“Of course, a period of analysis is required to determine both the direct and indirect factors behind the crash and to work out who is responsible,” Huang said.

1,000-year-old coins unearthed in China

Beijing, August 23: More than 200 coins that were used 1,000-years ago were excavated in China, archaeologists said Tuesday.
The green verdigris-covered coins were unearthed at a construction site in Araxan League in Inner Mongolia, said Zhang Zhenzhou who is from the Araxan museum.

Most of the coins were from the Northern Song Dynasty and some from the Tang Dynasty, reported Xinhua.
Zhang said the area where the coins were found belonged to the Western Xia kingdom.

Official: Japan to have new PM early next week

Tokyo, August 23: A Japanese Cabinet minister says the country will have a new prime minister by early next week.
Prime Minister Naoto Kan has faced demands to step down amid criticism of his handling of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami and subsequent nuclear crisis.
Economy Minister Kaoru Yosano says Kan told Cabinet members Tuesday that his days are numbered and that they should be ready to resign en masse next Tuesday. Parliament is set to pass Friday two key bills that Kan wanted to see through.

NY prosecutors: Dismiss Strauss-Kahn sex charges

New York, August 23: Prosecutors are seeking formal dismissal on Tuesday of criminal charges in a sexual-assault case against former International Monetary Fund leader Dominique Strauss-Kahn.

The prosecution says that persistent lying by the hotel maid from Guinea who accused him of trying to rape her in his posh suite made it impossible for them to determine what really happened.

Man held for selling fake Platinum

Hyderabad, August 23: Task Force police on Monday arrested one person for duping customers by selling titanium alloy ingot in the name of original platinum and collecting high amounts of cash from them.
Police recovered 680 grams of Titanium alloy ingot which looks like platinum metal and one mobile phone from him. Another accused is at large.
On a tip-off, South Zone Task Force sleuths apprehended Imtiyaz Ali Mohammed Bhamla, a resident of Kachiguda, with 680 grams of titanium alloy ingot at Vysya Boys Hostel in Kachiguda while he was trying to sell the ingot for `25,000 per 10 grams.

Ex-wife stabs man to death

Hyderabad, August 23: A person was stabbed to death by his ex-wife at Sulemannagar here on Monday.

Police said that Raghunatha Reddy, a native of Chittoor district got married to Khatiza Begum, a resident of Sulemannagar in 2003 and later got divorced. Later, Khatiza remarried.

But since past few months, Raghunatha wanted to get back to her and started harassing her. When he tried to beat her on Monday over this, she slit his throat with a knife and fled

IAF trainer aircraft crashes near Hyderabad

Hyderabad, August 23: A trainer aircraft of the Air Force Academy, Hakimpet here crashed on the outskirts of the city on Monday leaving its pilot injured. The single-seater Kiran trainer aircraft reportedly developed a technical snag mid-air and burst into flames after the pilot ejected himself out. Luckily, the burning aircraft landed in an agricultural field causing no civilian casualties. “The aircraft fell in agricultural fields and no one was working there at that time,’’ a woman working in a nearby field, who was an eye-witness to the mishap, told the police.

‘Separated working women entitled for maintenance’

New Delhi, August 23: A woman separated from her husband is not expected to remain “idle and starve” and can claim maintenance from him even after taking up a job, a Delhi court has held.

Additional Sessions Judge Virendra Bhat gave the ruling while ordering the husband of an estranged woman, living at Uttam Nagar in West Delhi and providing private tuition to earn her livelihood, to pay her Rs 14,000 a month to take care of herself.

Court rejects Dawood sister’s passport plea

New Delhi, August 23: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday dismissed the plea of fugitive don Dawood Ibrahim’s sister Haseena Ibrahim Parker challenging the central government’s refusal to issue her a fresh passport, saying she herself is not interested in the case.

“None appeared for the petitioner (Parker). It seems she is not interested in pursuing the matter anymore,” Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw said, dismissing Parker’s petition.

New Delhi, August 23: The Congress leadership is likely to convene a meeting of party MPs Thursday to discuss the steps taken to deal with the Lokpal logjam in the wake of concerns of party leaders over Anna Hazare’s fast and the picketing of the houses of some leaders by Hazare activists.

‘Tomorrow, there is an all-party meeting. A day after, a meeting of Congress members of parliament is perhaps being called. This is how we gather inputs, discuss and express our concerns,’ Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni told reporters at Parliament House.
