Rains lash Punjab, Haryana; flood-like situation in 150 villages

New Delhi, August 24: Moderate to heavy rains lashed several parts of Punjab and Haryana on Wednesday, leading to a flood-like situation in 150 villages where major rivers are in spate.

Even as the incessant rains led to a marginal dip in temperatures, the humidity levels oscillated between 80 to 85 per cent across the twin states of Punjab and Haryana and their joint capital Chandigarh, the Met office said here.

ED may file money laundering case against Jagan

Hyderabad, August 24: The Enforcement Directorate may file money laundering case against Y S Jaganmohan Reddy and some of his associates; days after the CBI searched various premises belonging to the Kadapa MP.

The Directorate is understood to have made a discreet probe trailing the funds pumped by the MP and son of former Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister, Y S Rajasekhara Reddy and his associates into the companies owned by them.

Killer shark kills another surfer

Plettenberg Bay, August 24: Yet another surfer falls victim to a shark attack. A 49-year-old man was attacked in Plettenberg Bay, off the country’s southern coast, reported ‘AAP.

Though he was pulled from water and rushed to hospital all efforts to resuscitate him were futile. He had bite marks to his leg, thigh and groin area.

There has been a number of fatal shark attackes in the recent past. A British honeymooner was savaged as his spouse looked on in The Seychelles last week.

Muslim man hit by train, head severed from the body

Hyderabad, August 24: In a heartrending accident a Muslim man was killed on the spot when he was hit by a train. A goods train was going to Maulali from Mahboobnagar on Tuesday at 1:40 pm. Near Moghal colony railway crossing a Muslim man aged 45 was hit by the train and died on the spot. His head was severed from the body. Gateman Yadayya told that although goods train driver had seen him from afar and he did apply brakes, still the train could only stop after crushing the man.

Eid moon may be sighted on Monday

Dubai, August 24: A government moon-sighting committee formed by justice minister Hadef Al Dahiri will meet in Abu Dhabi on Monday evening to decide whether Eid Al Fitr will begin on Tuesday or Wednesday.

The committee, comprising officials from the Islamic Affairs Authority and several other departments in all emirates, will wait for reports from local Shariah (Islamic) courts on whether the moon is sighted or not.

Gambler jumps to death on losing money

Hyderabad, August 24: A private college manager, who is believed to have lost Rs 3 lakh in three days in gambling, jumped to death from the third floor of the Country Club building at Begumpet here on Tuesday. The professional gambler, KM Srinivasa Rao (47), was manager of SVIT college in Secunderabad and resident of Rasoolpura.

“Srinivasa Rao was a member of the club and was regular card player. He had membership of some other clubs also including Chiran Fort and GVR Family Club at Marredpally,” Punjagutta police inspector K Ashoka Chakravarthy said.

Man suffers from swine flu in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, August 24: A man in Hyderabad is suffering from H1N1 virus. He had been shifted to Gandhi Hospital on August 18 for he has been suffering from swine flu. Later he was tested positive for H1N1. The patient is undergoing treatment at the hospital.

However Dr. K Sabhakar state coordinator for H1N1 and professor of pulmonary medicine said that H1N1 disease is not a problem. When a person suffers from it he can be treated. People need not worry but should act cautiously. In Hyderabad only one swine flu patient has been shifted to hospital so far.

What about media corruption, asks Salman Khursheed

New Delhi, August 24: Union Minister for Law and Justice Salman Khursheed has said the government would be accused of being ‘insensitive’ and there would be a ‘mass movement for the media’ if it goes ahead with the investigation of the senior journalists who figure in the Niira Radia tapes.

In an interview with television channel Mr.Khursheed asked anchor Rahul Kanwal why ‘media corruption’ should not be investigated by the Lokpal institution under the Team Anna version of the Jan Lok Pal bill.

Quake rocks East Coast of U.S., no major damage

Washington, August 24: One of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded on the East Coast of the United States shook buildings and rattled nerves on Tuesday and forced the evacuations of parts of the Capitol, White House and Pentagon.

There were no reports of deaths, but fire officials in Washington said there were at least some injuries.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake just before 2 p.m. (1800 GMT) registered magnitude 5.8 and was centred about 64 kilometres northwest of Richmond, Virginia.

4 Vehicles carrying big animals were confiscated at Ibrahimpatnam

Hyderabad, August 24: Jameeathul Quraish of A.P. complained that the recently constituted task force team to prevent cow – slaughter has confiscated four vehicles carrying big animals. Minorities Scholarships: Centre extends the date

Hyderabad, August 24: Accepting the representations made by the parents and other organization, Govt. of India extended the last date of submission of pre-matric and post-matric scholarship applications upto 31st August 2011. This decision was taken by the Ministry of Minorities Welfare, Govt. of India, New Delhi.

The last date of submission of renewal applications was already extended earlier which is 31st December 2011.

PM appeals to Anna to end fast

New Delhi, August 24: On the eighth day of Anna Hazare’s agitation, a concerned Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday directly reached out to him with an appeal for ending fast and a promise that his Jan Lokpal Bill could be considered by Parliament along with the government draft.

In a letter to Hazare, Singh said the government would request Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar to refer the Team Hazare bill to the Parliamentary Standing Committee which would then be formally asked to “fast track their deliberations to the extent reasonably feasible”.

India yet to get evidence related to David Headley

New Delhi, August 24: India is yet to receive from the United States some evidence related to 26/11 terror attack accused David Headley, Lok Sabha was informed on Tuesday.

Minister of State for Home Jitendra Singh said investigation in India on Headley’s involvement in terrorist acts here was complete.

“The transfer of some evidence from the USA is awaited. Similarly, transfer of evidence from Pakistan with regard to some other accused persons is awaited. The final report in the case accordingly will be filed in the competent court,” he said.

Sonia expected to return by first week of Sept

New Delhi, August 24: Congress President Sonia Gandhi, who underwent a surgery in the US, is expected to return by this weekend or in the first week of September.

Sources said, that there has been considerable improvement in Gandhi’s medical condition and she has been informed of the Anna Hazare issue.

Varun Gandhi in Ramlila to support Anna

New Delhi, August 24: Firebrand BJP MP from Pilibhit and an open supporter of the anti-graft Lokpal Bill, Varun Gandhi on Wednesday morning reached Ramlila Maidan to extend his support to the fasting social activist Anna Hazare.

Tripoli, August 24: With rebels’ declaration of capturing the capital city Tripoli, Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi has been missing along with his female body guards, dubbed The Amazonian Guard.

According to reports, Gaddafi fled from Tripoli along with more than 100 female bodyguards, who were known as ‘Sweet 72’ or ‘Killer Beauties’. Though one of Gaddafi’s son, who was under rebels’ custody, claimed the Tripoli is still “under control” of the regime, Western media reported that rebel army captured key centres of the capital.
