Nepal braces for another battle of ballot

Kathmandu, August 24: With the 10 days’ time given to Nepal’s warring parties by President Ram Baran Yadav to name a new consensus prime minister running out Wednesday evening, the head of state has now asked parliament to elect a new premier on the basis of majority vote.

“The president has directed parliament to start proceedings to elect a new prime minister,” Yadav’s media advisor Rajendra Dahal said.

Strauss-Kahn free to return to France

New York, August 24: Former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn Tuesday expressed his relief at seeing the end of the “nightmare” in his first remarks to the press since he was arrested in New York May 14 and accused of sexual assault.

The 62-year-old French politician is free to leave the US after New York state Judge Michael Obus accepted the Manhattan district attorney’s motion to drop the charges and an appeals court turned down the complainant’s request for the appointment of a special prosecutor.

Mumbai, August 25: Arbaaz Khan is a worried man as his email account has been hacked. The ” Dabangg” producer plans to file a complaint.

“My email account has been hacked for the second time this week. I’m gonna lodge a complaint with the cyber cell as its a criminal offence,” Arbaaz posted on the microblogging site Twitter.

“Hackers don’t seem to realise that such an act can land them in jail. The offense carries a 3 year jail term. Wonder if all this is worth it,” he added.

Gambler jumps to death on losing money

Hyderabad, August 24: A private college manager, who is believed to have lost Rs 3 lakh in three days in gambling, jumped to death from the third floor of the Country Club building at Begumpet here on Tuesday. The professional gambler, KM Srinivasa Rao (47), was manager of SVIT college in Secunderabad and resident of Rasoolpura. “Srinivasa Rao was a member of the club and was regular card player. He had membership of some other clubs also including Chiran Fort and GVR Family Club at Marredpally,” Punjagutta police inspector K Ashoka Chakravarthy said.

2 senior officers get jail for contempt of court

Hyderabad, August 24: Justice P V Sanjay Kumar of AP High court on Tuesday sentenced two senior officers to 15 days imprisonment and imposed a fine of `3,000 while dealing with a contempt case against them. The officers are principal secretary for Finance Ranjeev Acharya and director of Mines department Sushil Kumar.

The judge was dealing with contempt case filed by Sode Ramulu of Khammam who had bid over `1 crore in a sand auction at Khammam. A communication requiring petitioner to execute a lease deed within 7 days had been sent to petitioner after expiry of seven-day period.

With the Corporation coming to know that a few bill collectors were not depositing the collected amount on the same day and were even using the money to lend on interest, GHMC has decided to replace manual collection with the use of hand-held computers.

Airlines serves chicken to Hindu vegetarian

Melbourne, August 25: Singapore Airlines has been accused of serving chicken to a vegetarian Hindu woman who was travelling from New Zealand to India. According to New Zealand media reports on Wednesday, 56-year-old Pushplata Sharma claimed to have fallen sick after she was served chicken on a flight to India.

Sharma of Blenheim, New Zealand, has been a vegetarian throughout her life as part of her religion and never ate meat or eggs.

Sanitation worker stabs housewife

Hyderabad, August 24: A housewife was allegedly stabbed by a garbage collector in the Income Tax quarters on Tuesday afternoon. The man later stabbed himself after the woman raised an alarm. 37-year-old E Prasanthi, wife of Praveen Kumar, is a senior accountant in Income Tax department and reside in Banjara Hills.

Police said that while Prasanthi was alone in her house, the garbage collector of the quarters Hussain came to her place at around 12.30 p.m.

Nehru Zoo gets 2 Indian rhinos

Hyderabad, August 24: A pair of Indian rhinoceros have been brought on Tuesday from Sanjay Gandhi biological park in Patna to enthral visitors at the Nehru zoological park. The pair includes a 7-year-old male and a 5-year-old female rhinos, each of which weighs over a ton, said Nehru zoo curator M A Waheed. The rainy season is the ideal time for the rhinos to adapt to the new city. As rhinos are gregarious animals, they will be kept together in the zoo. For the first two days they will be off-display as they need to rest after a long travel of 1,700 kms from Patna to Hyderabad, he added.

Cash-for-vote: Amar Singh, Sudheendra Kulkarni chargesheeted

New Delhi, August 25: Former SP General Secretary Amar Singh was on Wednesday chargesheeted in a Delhi Court in the 2008 cash-for-vote scam along with two ex-BJP MPs and L K Advani’s former close aide Sudheendra Kulkarni for allegedly hatching a conspiracy to bribe MPs ahead of a confidence vote in Lok Sabha.

Kulkarni has been dubbed as the “mastermind” of the scam and he allegedly remained in touch with all conspirators and was present when the “illegal gratification” was paid to the MPs, according to the charge sheet.

Stormwater drain slab on main road caves in

Hyderabad, August 24: Motorists and passersby near Fever Hospital, Nallakunta had a lucky escape on Tuesday afternoon when a huge slab covering a major storm water drain caved in due to heavy rains in the last few days. No casualties or injuries were reported from anyone. But coming to know of the incident, onlookers gathered in hundreds, leading to commotion and a traffic jam that lasted a few hours. Later, a barricade was put up by Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation to prevent any accidents. It was also decided to divert the traffic through the road via an alternate route.

Nearly 3 crore citizens issued Aadhaar numbers

New Delhi, August 25: In all, 2.87 crore unique identification numbers have been issued across the country so far under the ‘Aadhaar’ scheme and the government is targeting to cover 60 crore citizens by 2014.

“A total of 2.87 crore Aadhaar (cards) have been issued as of this morning. The goal is to issue 60 crore Aadhaar by 2014 and we are well on the way,” Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) Chairman Nandan Nilekani said today while addressing a FICCI seminar on ‘Aadhaar’.

Stopped for checking, lady strips naked at airport

London, August 25: A woman stripped naked at an airport in Bermuda after being stopped by the customs officers for a routine luggage check, a media report said Wednesday.

Loukai Phillips, 36, who had arrived on the island on a flight from London, told the stunned officials: “If you want to see me naked, you can do it right f*****g here.”

She then removed all her clothes as shocked passengers – including children – looked on in the middle of the airport’s busy arrivals hall, Daily Mail reported.

‘Can’t book Sachin, Sania for insulting Tricolour’

Madurai, August 25: Sportstars Sachin Tendulkar, Sania Mirza and TV host Mandira Bedi cannot be booked for allegedly insulting the Tricolour on foreign soil without the Centre’s permission, police told the Madras High Court.

“No. Not possible without the sanction of the Central government,” police said in a counter-affidavit filed in the Madurai Bench of the High Court.

Police submitted that none of the accused persons named in the complaint belonged to Tamil Nadu nor were they available on the date of the complaint or on subsequent dates.

Tranquillisers prove deadly to zoo animals

Hyderabad, August 24: In the past five months, 28 wild or zoo animals have died while being handled by staff of three zoos in the state – Tirupati, Visakhapatnam and Hyderabad. Last year, the number of deaths was 68. These deaths include zoo animals as well as those that had to be captured after they strayed into human habitations. One of the main reasons for these deaths? Many zoo keepers and staff aren’t trained well enough to know the right dosage when they tranquilise the animals.

Muslims reject Imam Bukhari’s statement against Anna

Lucknow, August 25: Defying Imam Bhukhari’s statement of not joining Anna Hazare’s campaign, scores of Muslims gathered at Jhulelal Park here on Wednesday for Iftar organised by India Against Corruption (IAC) (Lucknow Unit). After breaking their fast, the devotees also offered their namaz at the site.

“We cannot be divided on religious lines. The issue of corruption is concerned to all the sections of the society. We are with Anna Hazare’s anti graft stir,” said Mohd Aziz. He also appealed to Muslims to come forward and extend their support to the movement.

AMU investigation into Malappuram Centre clash

Aligarh, August 24: An internal investigation by the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) into the incident of fighting among the students in its Malappuram Centre has clarified that it should not be classified as clash between the students of north and south India.

The investigation conducted by Prof. H.S. A. Yahya of Department of Wildlife Sciences of AMU submitted his report after visiting the Malappuram Centre and meeting students and staff there. Prof. Yahya in his report blamed Hindi and Urdu media for playing up the incident.
