Camel meat tops menu in Hyderabad this Ramzan

Hyderabad, August 25:Camel meat is in great demand this Ramzan and the Old City has witnessed a considerable rise in the number of outlets selling the priced meat. The 20 per cent hike in the price is no deterrent for the many Muslims for whom, the holy month is incomplete without this dish.

Traders say that these camels are brought from Rajasthan and Gujarat a couple of months ahead of Ramzan and sold at an auction in Narsingi village in Ranga Reddy district. Each camel, traders say, was sold for anywhere between Rs 40,000-50,000 this year.

Hyderabad, August 25: Undisturbed by the real estate boom, a nondescript graveyard near the Himayatsagar still stands testimony to a chapter in the history of Hyderabad that is steeped in mystery – the founding of Asaf Jahi dynasty.

The founder of the dynasty, Mir Qamaruddin Ali Khan, who was also known as Chin Qilich Khan II, was only 16 years and had no idea of what was in store for him in the Deccan when the sultanate of Golconda fell to the army of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.

5-yr-old girl raped

Chandigadh, August 25: A 5-year-old girl was raped near her house in Sector 25 on Tuesday evening. A case was registered at Sector-11 police station. The girl was taken to Government Multispeciality Hospital in Sector 16 where she is undergoing treatment. Nobody was arrested in this connection.

The girl’s father is a labourer and they reside in a shanty. Police said the girl was violated 100 metres from her house. In another incident, there was an attempt to rape a 5-year-old girl in Mauli Jagran. Police have identified a neighbour as the culprit, but he has not been arrested.

Notice for Hajj aspirants

Hyderabad, August 25: According to Andhra Pradesh State Hajj Committee reports, Hajj committee of India has extended the date for submission of passports to August 30, for the Hajj aspirants selected under waiting list.

In a press release Hajj committee Chairman Mr. Syed Khaleeludidn Ahmed appealed to the said Hajj aspirants to submit their passports before the last date. He said if the passports are not submitted till the last date, then their seats will be allotted to other Hajj aspirants of the waiting list.

No threat to Kiran Kumar Reddy government: DS

Hyderabad, August 25: Former Pradesh Congress Committee president D Srinivas on Wednesday claimed that the resignation of 26 pro-Jagan Congress MLAs do not pose any threat to the continuance of Kiran Kumar Reddy Government in the State.

Talking to reporters at Congress Legislature Party office, Srinivas said that the resignations would in no way destabilise the government as the Congress still enjoyed the magic numbers to stay in power. Denying allegations that the Congress was indulging in revenge politics, he said the ongoing CBI probe should not be linked to the State Government.

Sonia, Indra Nooyi among top ten world’s most powerful women

Washington, August 25: Congress party leader Sonia Gandhi and Indra Nooyi, Indian-American CEO of PepsiCo, figure among the top ten in the Forbes list of the world’s most powerful women headed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Besides Sonia Gandhi, 64, in the seventh place and Nooyi, 55, in the fourth place, two other Indians made it to the list, which is dominated by politicians, businesswomen and leaders in media and entertainment.

While ICICI Bank CEO Chanda Kochhar, 49, was placed 43rd, Biocon Founder Chair, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, 58, finished at 99.

New Delhi, August 25: In protest against the inclusion of former chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy’s name in the FIR issued by of Central Bureau of Investigation in the disproportionate assets case of Kadapa MP Jaganmohan Reddy, the Congress MP from Nellore and staunch supporter of Jagan, Mekapati Rajagopal on Wednesday submitted his resignation from Lok Sabha. He submitted his resignation to Speaker Meira Kumar.

Addressing reporters, Rajagopal stated that he submitted his resignation in the prescribed format and asked the Speaker to accept his resignation early.

Muslim students in UK face loan dilemma

London, August 25: Thousands of young Muslims in Britain could be denied the chance of a university education because of a new government scheme to charge interest on loans to undergraduates, an Islamic student body has warned.

The Federation of Student Islamic Societies (Fosis) has embarked on urgent talks with the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills because the scheme, to come into effect in a year’s time, amounts to usury or “riba”, which is banned under Islamic law.

New Delhi, August 25: With the government hardening its position on the Jan Lokpal Bill, the deadlock between the Centre and Team Anna continued Wednesday. While government negotiator Salman Khurshid claimed negotiations were on, Team Anna said the government had “backtracked” from its earlier position.

New Delhi, August 25: Fasting Anna Hazare Wednesday asked his supporters not to stop police if they evicted him forcibly from the Ramlila ground where he has been on a hunger strike for the last nine days.

The veteran activist demanding a sweeping anti-corruption law appealed to thousands of his supporters not to resort to violence in any case.

CBI serves notices to Jagan’s auditors, investors

Hyderabad, August 25: The Central Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday served notice on Jagati Publications auditor Varadarajan asking him depose in connection with disproportionate assets case of Y S R Congress Party president Jaganmohan Reddy.

Apart from Varadarajan, the CBI also served notices on 12 companies which have made investments in firms floated by Jaganmohan Reddy and asked them to depose before the probing agency.

Israel uses mini-drone for assassination

Jerusalem, August 25: Israel has designed a miniature unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to help Israeli intelligence services identify and target leaders of Palestinian resistance movements.

The newly unveiled spying UAV, dubbed Ghost, is an almost silent drone that weighs 9 pounds (nearly 4 kilograms), UPI reported.

The twin-rotor vertical take-off drone is designed for special clandestine operations in urban areas and has a range of around 2.5 miles (four kilometers), a flight endurance of 6 hours and speed of around 37 miles (59.5 kilometer) an hour.

Bangladesh urged to stop extrajudicial killings

Dhaka, August 24: An international human rights group on Wednesday accused law enforcement agencies in Bangladesh of routinely torturing suspects and carrying out hundreds of extrajudicial killings.
Amnesty International said a special anti-crime force, the Rapid Action Battalion, has killed at least 200 people without trial since January 2009, when the current government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina took power. Hasina had earlier promised to end such killings.
The London-based human rights group also accused the regular police force and coast guard of extrajudicial killings.
