Threat calls for Manisha Lamba

Mumbai, August 25: Actress Minissha Lamba is “flummoxed” after getting threatening calls from unknown numbers, but says she would like to get to the bottom of the matter.

“It started on Saturday when I received the first spate of calls from an international number and an Indian number, which turned out to be from somewhere in or around Haryana. At first I answered the phone. The callers from both numbers say the same thing – ‘Don’t attend the event in New York.’,” she said. She was expected to attend an Indo-American cultural event in New York Aug 25.

Gulshan Grover wins best actor at NY fest

New Delhi, August 25: Actor Gulshan Grover has been honoured with the best actor international award at the New York City International Film Festival (NYCIFF) for his performance in the Hollywood film “Desperate Endeavours”.

In the film, directed by French-Algerian director Sam Khassa, Gulshan plays spiritual leader Dada Bhagwan, the man who went to America in the 1970s and enlightened the lives of the Indians there as well as the Americans.

Kashmir opposition demands release of prisoners

Srinagar, August 25: Opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Thursday demanded release of all political prisoners and youths in deference to the forthcoming holy Muslim festival of Eid-ul-Fitr.

“The government has released only 12 prisoners (two days ago) while around 1,200 are still being detained. We demand all of them be released,” said PDP President Mehbooba Mufti while leading a march here.

The “draconian” Public Safety Act, which gives sweeping powers to the state, “must be repealed”, Mufti said.

Sohrab case: CBI questions IPS Sanjeev Bhatt

Ahmedabad, August 25: Suspended IPS officer Sanjeev Bhatt was questioned by the CBI, probing the 2005 Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, pertaining to the allegations made by him in an affidavit filed in the Supreme Court, senior officials said on Thursday.

Bhatt, who accused Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi of misusing the state machinery during post-Godhra riots in 2002, had last month filed an additional affidavit in the apex court alleging that Gujarat government was helping the accused in the fake encounter case to prepare their defense.

Nadia, August 25:A complaint was lodged with police on Wednesday against a BSF jawan, for allegedly pushing off his wife from the rooftop. The accused who had passed off the incident as an accident is absconding. and trying to pass it off as an accident.

Hanif Sekh, the BSF Jawan posted in Assam, had returned home at Dogachhi a few days back. At around 11pm on Tuesday he had taken his wife Mumtaz Begum, 32, to their new home which was under construction.

No headway In Shehla Masood Case

Bhopal, August 25 Nine days after Right to Information activist Shehla Masood was found dead in her car, the police are yet to make a breakthrough in the case.

The sleuths are tracking several angles to the alleged murder including Shehla’s personal life, the people miffed by the RTI queries filed by her, her enmity with a police officer from Indore during the earlier event management days and her association with numerous political leaders in Congress and BJP. The CD that she submitted to the police department 19 months before her death is also part of the investigation now.

Educational institutions to get Eid holidays on August 29 and 30

Thiruvananthapuram, August 25: The Kerala government yesterday declared August 29 and 30 as Eid holidays for educational institutions. If the Eid comes on August 31, that day too will be holiday with a compensating working day later.

Government offices will have holiday on August 30. If Eid comes on August 31, that day will be made restricted holiday for Muslim employees only.

Woman, child burnt alive over dowry

Meerut, August 25:In a suspected case of dowry, a woman along with her three-year-old child was allegedly burnt alive by her in-laws in Lohada village here, police said today.

Anshu’s in-laws burnt her alive by pouring kerosene oil over her and her child yesterday, they said.

The woman’s family in their complaint to the police have alleged that Anshu’s in-laws tortured her for not fulfilling their dowry demands.

The victim got married to Rajendra around a year and a half back.

India frees seven Pakistanis

Lahore, August 25: Indian authorities handed over seven Pakistanis to the rangers at Wagah Border today after they completed their sentence in jails.

According to Pakistan Rangers spokesman Mahboob Husain, the seven Pakistanis were arrested in India for illegal border crossing and smuggling had completed their sentence.

Hyderabad, August 25 (Siasat News): The unidentified robbers snatched money from an ex employee and killed him. This incident occurred in the jurisdiction of Rajendranagar police station.

The robbers killed one Prakash, 52, with heavy boulders and ran away with his money. According to police sources, Prakash took voluntarily retirement ten years back and got his wife Rajyalaxmi appointed on his place.

Shahid Kapoor, Bipasha Basu on a dinner date!

Mumbai, August 25: Lone ranger Bipasha Basu and lovelorn Shahid Kapoor are making the most of their ‘single’ status.

Buzz has it that the couple recently met over dinner and was heard talking about working in a film together soon.

I have never connived with corruption: PM

New Delhi, August 25 : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Thursday that he might have made mistakes but denied accusations that he had ever “connived with corruption”.

In his reply to the debate on rise in corruption Thursday in the Lok Sabha, the prime minister said the “government would do everything possible to cleanse the system”.

“We need to find credible solutions to deal with the scourge of corruption.”

Five injured in communal clash

Lucknow, August 25: At least five people, including a policeman, were injured in a communal clash over a land dispute in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district, police said Thursday.

Hindus and Muslims in Wazirganj area clashed late Wednesday over a land dispute. Heated arguments snowballed and two groups resorted to stone pelting and firing.

“A large number of people from both sides started vandalising shops and attacked the police teams trying to defuse the matter,” Deputy Superintendent of Police S.K. Singh told reporters in Bahraich, some 140 km from here.

Democratic system or a high-profile corrupt industry

I simply disagree with the anxiety of a few that the ongoing fight by some activists against country’s corrupt systems poses a threat to the Indian democratic system. It’s ridiculously untrue if some charge that these anti-corruption forces, in the name of restoring morality and lucidity in public affairs, are actually attempting to destabilize the egalitarian process in the country.

‘Murdered’ woman turns out alive

Lucknow, August 25: The police are yet to verify the woman’s claim that she is 26-year-old Anjali because her parents, who had lodged the murder case, have disappeared, said Auraiya SP Abdul Hamid. The police are trying to track down other relatives.

The woman was caught by Etawah police on Tuesday evening in Vedpura area in suspicious circumstances. During questioning, she identified herself as Anjali and said she had run away from the residence of her husband’s parents in Kannauj in June.
