Eight gets lifer for Paritala Ravi’s murder

Anantapur, August 26: The Anantapur district court on Thursday sentenced eight people for life for the brutal murder of TDP MLA Paritala Ravi. The court has also acquitted four persons in the case.

Paritala Ravi was shot dead by his rivals at the district Telugu Desam Party office on January 24, 2005. There were a total of 16 accused in the case. Of them, three have been brutally killed and one has turned approver.

Traffic curbs for Jummat-Ul-Vida

Hyderabad, August 26: On the occasion of Jummat-Ul-Vida (last Friday of Ramzan month), the traffic police have decided to impose traffic restrictions at various locations of the twin cities on August 26.

Officials said that the main roads between Charminar and Madina, Charminar and Murgi Chowk besides Charminar and Moghalpura Kaman will be closed for traffic from 9 am to 3 pm.

Punjagutta graveyard locks gate

Hyderabad, August 26: Three bodies, which were brought for cremation at the Punjagutta graveyard, were kept waiting for over two hours outside as the managing committee locked the main gate on Thursday morning in protest against CPDCL snapping power to the graveyard.

The Punjagutta graveyard committee members also staged a dharna after locking the main gate and reopened the premises only after CPDCL officials restored power to the graveyard.

Gaza City, August 26: A days-old truce announced by Gaza militants appeared to be fast unraveling on Thursday after 24 hours of airstrikes left six Gazans dead and 30 injured, medics said.

But an airstrike on Rafah early on Wednesday which killed Islamic Jihad militant Ismail Al-Ismar sparked a flurry of retaliatory rocket attacks, followed by further Israeli raids, rendering the truce agreement practically meaningless.

Falls in love with student

Agartala, August 26: In a horrifying incident, a tutor chopped off his girl’s student’s hand and also injured her mother, police said here today.

“Sanjoy Das, 40, had attacked a middle aged woman and her daughter Susmita Das, 19, with a ‘Dao’ (a sharp weapon), severing one of Susmita’s hands and the fingers of other,” a police spokesman said.

The incident occured Wednesday evening in Kamalpur, 130 km north of here, when Susmita was returning home along with her mother.

NASA to launch moon mission in September

Washington, August 26: NASA’s discovery mission programme – GRAIL – is making final launch preparations for its Sept 8 launch from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, the space agency announced Thursday.

The Gravity Recovery And Interior Laboratory twin spacecraft are tasked for a nine-month mission to explore Earth’s nearest neighbour in unprecedented detail.

They will determine the structure of the lunar interior from crust to core and advance our understanding of the thermal evolution of the moon, Xinhua reported.

Locks woman in toilet, cleans out apartment

Mumbai, August 26:An unknown man on Thursday entered the first floor flat of a 57-year-old homemaker at Gurukripa building near Swami Vivekanand School in Chembur, where she stays as a tenant, on pretext of renovating the flat, locked the victim in the toilet and robbed cash and gold ornaments worth Rs 1.47 lakh.

The accused told the victim, Lata Bhatia, that the house owner had sent him to examine the flat before carrying out the renovation work, the Chunnabatti police said. Police said that the accused’s age is suspected to be 30.

Hyderabad, August 26: Imams and muezzins in mosques are revered and respected but are poorly paid, not enough remuneration for a decent, dignified living. A majority of them are paid so little that they find it tough to meet the bare minimum daily expenses, leave alone spending necessary amounts on healthcare or education for their children.

There are nearly 5,000 mosques in the GHMC limits. Each employs a muezzin, the person who gives call five-times a day for prayer, and an imam, the one who leads the mandatory daily prayers.

Daughter-in-law plotted murder

New Delhi, August 26: With the arrest of four persons, the police have solved the mystery behind the murder of a 55-year-old woman in the Okhla area on August 11. Shockingly, one of the accused is the victim’s daughter-in-law. The accused have been identified as Sumitra, 30, Azad Singh, 28, Perminder Singh, 29 and Pradeep, 22.

Police sources said Kala Devi was smothered to death after which the accused removed the jewellery she was wearing to create the impression that robbery was the motive behind the murder.

India’s Haj seat quota raised by 10,000

New Delhi, August 26 : Saudi Arabia has announced an additional quota of 10,000 Haj devotees for India.

“The entire lot of these 10,000 seats have been transferred to Haj Committee of India, Mumbai,” the external affairs ministry said here Thursday.

“The seats will be distributed to the states/Union Territories that have received applications in excess of the originally allotted quota on the basis of the proportionate Muslim population of the state/Union Territories concerned,” the ministry said.

Facebook encourages teenage drug, alcohol abuse: Study

London, August 26: How much time does your child spend on Facebook? Teenagers who regularly use social networking sites are much more likely to drink, smoke and use marijuana, a new study has claimed. The Columbia University study of 1,000 American teenagers aged between 12 and 17 years found that those who used such sites daily were five times more likely to smoke tobacco than those who did not.

Similarly, they are three times more likely to drink alcohol and twice as likely to use marijuana.

A Saudi woman arrested for driving in the month of Ramadan

Riyadh, August 25: Saudi authorities have arrested a female activist for defying the ban on women driving in the Wahhabi kingdom.

Najla Hariri was shortly arrested on Wednesday while she was driving to her daughter’s office.

Hariri is among a group of activists who launched an Internet campaign in June 2011 urging Saudi women to defy the driving ban in the country.

“I have not signed any commitment that forbids me from driving,” AFP quoted Hariri as saying after her release.

‘Lucknow made city of stones by Mayawati’

The PLA has replaced liquid-fuelled, nuclear-capable CSS-2 IRBMs with more advanced and survivable solid-fuelled CSS-5 MRBM systems to strengthen its deterrent posture relative to India, the Pentagon has said in its annual report on Chinese military build up to the Congress.

Three-year-old girl burnt alive by drunk father

Mumbai, August 25: A three-year-old-girl was burnt alive allegedly by her drunk father in Kherwadi village of suburban Malwani, police said on Thursday.

The accused Veerappan Kaunder (37), who works as a conservation worker with the city’s civic body on a contract basis, allegedly poured kerosene on his daughter Shiv Shankari and five-year-old son Shabari last night after which he set the girl on fire, they said adding that the boy managed to run out of the house.

The victim was admitted to the civic-run KEM hospital on Wednesday night but died while undergoing treatment, they said.
